Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies) is a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue — leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park — which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

    Familiar Faces

    N/A.

    Bayindir
    Mazraoui Maguire Yoro
    Dalot Bruno Ugarte Dorgu
    Garnacho Mount
    Zirkzee

The priority should obviously be the Europa, but I'd start Bayindir to see what level he's at after all the time he's been out.

This is an obvious 3-0 loss... Honestly don't care about this match in the slightest. Just make sure that nobody gets hurt or tired for the Lyon game. This means nothing.

Worried we could get a hammering. Short turnaround and nothing to play for vs a side in good form with a week's rest and lots to play for.

Rotate to the max here if we can, All eggs have to be in Thursdays basket. Give Mainoo / Mount / Shaw minutes

    Bayindir

    Dalot
    Kukonki
    Lindelof
    Shaw
    Amass

    Eriksen
    Mainoo

    Mount
    Zirkzee

    Obi

Couldn’t care less. Europa is the priority.

    Rotate rotate rotate.

    Bayinder
    Yoro - Lindelof - Shaw
    Collyer - Bruno - Ugarte - Dorgu
    Mount - Eriksen
    Hojlund

Yeah bayindir has to play. Get him up to speed and show Onana that it’s generally not good for your chances if you keep giving the other team goals

They're going to be out for blood, still pushing for a CL spot and we can't risk injuries. I'd not blame Ruben for a lot of rotation here, even if it ended up in a bit of a beating. Too much at stake next Thursday.

1-1 with a backs to the wall performance. A defender will be MOTM for us

Meh match, start fellas that won't or shouldn't be starting the 2nd leg v Lyon. So Onana in goal and work from there...

Got to start Bayindir in this one, we need to take a look at an alternative to Onana and have a serious think about it.

Shaw, Mainoo and Mount all need starts as well as Eriksen, Lindelof, Amas. Rest as many as possible for Thursday night.

I would rotate massively for this game.

Even if we play our best XI we would have lost. We have nothing to play, not even pride.

Except Dalot and Maguire and maybe Ugarte, I would start no one next Thursday

    -----------------------------------------------Bayindir---------------------------------------------
    -------------------------Lindelof----------Maguire--------------Shaw---------------------
    Dalot---------------------------Mainoo-------------Ugarte------------------------Amass
    -----------------------------------------Mount---------Eriksen----------------------------------
    --------------------------------------------------Hojlund--------------------------------------------

It frustrates so much to have to keep picking onana on my prediction lineup

If we were good I’d think we should rest players, but we’re not. I think these guys need as much time as possible on the pitch together and don’t seem that jaded. League position is still very valuable in terms of prize money and it’s very tight.

He will never do it but I'd start Lindelof, Hojlund, Garnacho, Eriksen, Onana and everybody else who shouldn't start for the Lyon 2nd league to avoid injuries but he's keen to build up the winning spirit, hope it doesn't come back to bite us in the ass.

This was total xG over last 2 games at St. James's Park: Newcastle 6.23 - 0.75 United. They dominated us in both games and should've won much more than 2-0 and 1-0. Ten Hag really struggled there (though he did at most places). Will be difficult to stop them this time as well.

Not sure there will be too much of rotation. Good result at Newcastle would be nice for confidence before Lyon (like 2nd half performance vs Arsenal was for 2nd leg vs Sociedad).

    Onana
    Lindelof - Maguire - Yoro
    Dalot - Ugarte - Bruno - Dorgu
    Zirkzee - Mount
    Hojlund

Not sure Shaw is yet starting games but probably will soon. Unfortunately for those two Dalot and Bruno will probably start another game. Mount got several cameos lately and maybe it's time to start a game now. Zirkzee gets a start but in 10 behind Hojlund.

Casemiro, Mainoo and Eriksen to get minutes in 2nd half.

Should be an easy win for Newcastle. Let's not make it easier for them by starting Onana and Hojlund please.

Could be nasty. They need the points and have Europe to play for. Plus, well rested and in good form.

I was hoping for a cup win hangover for these lot, the season was kind of wrapped up for them, but seeing that they have the Champions League to qualify for. I guess they'll be up for it.

I cannot explain my irrational hatred of Newcastle. I'm glad they beat Liverpool, but if they as a club were to cease to exist, I wouldn't miss them.

That being said, they'll beat us 2-0 sadly.

Get Bayindir in and provided he does ok, keep him in for Lyon return leg.

Try a couple of kids in place of the worst 1st team underperformers. Obi in for Hojlund. Moorhouse/Scanlon/Mantato in for Garnacho.

If the result is we lose and it hurts City and Chelsea's chances of top 4, oh dear oh well.

Yep we should definitly rotate. Bruno deserves a rest.
Not that it would happen but the 2 teams I'd start:

    vs Newcastle
    Bayindir
    Lindelof Maguire Shaw
    ?? Ugarte Collyer Amass
    Eriksen Garnacho
    Hojlund

    vs Lyon
    Bayindir
    Maz De Ligt Yoro
    Dalot Casemiro Bruno Dorgu
    Mount Mainoo
    Zirkzee

Just put us in the best possible position by giving every starting player a rest

Could a loss be a win? If we go on to win the Europa and the Geordies finish above City then yes I suppose. Would rather we win and City lose their own games though.

Think this is a loss sadly. Newcastle are a terrible matchup for us with how athletically superior they are, and they have an absolute gunman to punish any mistakes we might make.
It wasn't long ago that I was debating with fans who thought that we have a better team than them.

Genuinely wouldn't mind this, just for Onana and us fans getting a mental break from him.
