Newcastle United Football Club (nicknamed The Magpies) is a professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The first record of football being played on Tyneside dates from 3 March 1877 at Elswick Rugby Club. Later that year, Newcastle's first football club, Tyne Association, was formed. The team was renamed Newcastle East End F.C. in October 1882. Shortly after this, another Byker side, Rosewood FC, merged with East End to form an even stronger side. Meanwhile, across the city, West End Cricket Club began to take an interest in football and in August 1882, they formed Newcastle West End F.C. West End played their early football on their cricket pitch, but in May 1886, the club moved into St. James' Park.

The two clubs became rivals in the Northern League. During the spring of 1892, in a season during which West End's results were at an all-time low, and in which they had lost to their bitter rivals, East End, five times, West End found themselves in serious trouble. They approached East End with a view to a take over, the directors having decided that the club could no longer continue — leading to a merger of the two rivals as Newcastle East End decided to adopt a new name in recognition of the merger.Suggested names included Newcastle F.C., Newcastle Rangers, Newcastle City and City of Newcastle, but Newcastle United was decided upon on 9 December 1892, to signify the unification of the two teams.

The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but three years of the competition's history, spending 85 seasons in the top tier as of May 2016, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s without winning any trophies, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

Newcastle has a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne-Wear derby since 1898. Newcastle play their home games at St James' Park — which has been the home ground of Newcastle United since 1892 and has been used for football since 1880.

Huge game. Newcastle are in a mixed bag of form.

I think it’ll be the same side that started bar Maz for Shaw. Sesko needs to continue to start with his form.

    Lammens
    Dalot - Yoro - Maguire - Mazraoui
    Mainoo - Casemiro
    Mbeumo - Bruno - Cunha
    Sesko

Praying that Maguire and Licha are both fit for this one but I have a bad feeling neither will be.

It's said about a lot of sides because we've been shit for years, but Newcastle ALWAYS turn up against us at St. James. House of horrors. They're really poor though, we should be getting a result and it should be more of an open game that suits us.

They have a big few weeks ahead with City and Barca in cups. FA Cup is probably their best chance of getting into Europe, so I hope they rest a few players.

I think we lose here. Our performances just haven't been good enough and our current form isn't sustainable. Throw in a few injuries and a rabid Geordie crowd, it's not looking good.

A few defensive injuries starting to build up now. We’ll need Maguire for this one but he didn’t look great heading straight down the tunnel. After winning today, a point wouldn’t be the end of the world but I know we want to keep this run going. They have been poor recently but they’ll massively raise their game for us, as usual.

I think we’ll look better this game as we’ll get more space in behind Newcastle but as usual against them the big concern is if we can match their intensity and midfield physicality.

    Lammens
    Dalot Yoro Maguire Maz
    Mainoo Casemiro
    Bruno
    Mbeumo Sesko Cunha
I’d play Bruno in a midfield 3 to try and match them. Toss up between Mbeumo, Cunha & Amad.

They're going to be up for this one.

If we're as sloppy and lazy as we were today, Carrick's record is massively under threat

Newcastle are very up and down but will no doubt be up for this. I'd take a draw if offered to me now.

This is going to be very tough. The barcodes always are up for this fixture, particularly at home.

Draw won’t be the worst result but want the win to keep some daylight between us and the pressure on the teams chasing us.

10pts from 27 since Jan 1 and 1 win in their last 5 against the team in the worst form is not what I would call up and down.

Good results in Europe to be fair, albeit against weak opposition. You know they're going to be playing like 1970s Brazil for this game.

We're horrible here, fully expecting a loss. Not the end of the world if we do though, important not to overreact to random results after good runs of form and just accept they'll happen. They're in bad form but they see us as some sort of rival weirdly so you know they'll up their game for the day. Thankfully we have some breathing room now, especially with Villa playing Chelsea.

Can't see us risking Shaw, though hopefully Maguire is good to go. The rest... I'd probably drop Mbeumo to be honest.

I can't help thinking the same tbh. Why win today was so important

Of our remaining games this is probably the game we are least likely one to win, we seem to just capitulate that and they have the pace and power that we struggle with.

Their form is poor and they look very ordinary but that will go out the window I’m sure.

We haven't been great ourselves recently but Newcastle's League form is dire at the minute. Hopefully we can come away with another 3 points.

Amad should start this one for his work rate. I think the subs today indicate that Cunha will be the one to miss out.

As much as I’ve enjoyed our run of results, I don’t think we’re gonna get anything here.

They have 1 day of extra rest, their strength in midfield just seems to be our kryptonite, and our recent record here quite poor.

Would take a draw as it's notoriously tough place for us to go as they always raise it when we come to town

    Tough, tough game this.

We need to start with way more intensity and sharpness. Hopefully not having such a long break helps with that.

Geordies have not turned up at home last 3 games but you could bet your mortgage, they will on Wed! Tough game for us, we are nit playing well, would love 3 points, but will take a draw.

Has Elanga scored yet for them? :annoyed:

If Everton can beat this lot at their ground, so can we. But it will probably be a tight game, and it feel like we are due coming out on the wrong end of one of those for once.

    A point wouldn't be a disaster.

So much negativity here Breathe. Team is miles ahead of Ramsey, Elanga, Woltemande, Joelinto, burn, hall
Thiago etc. Not saying it’s going
To be easy, it’s a tough place to go but if we play good attacking football and defend well we have every chance of getting three points are at least a draw. Newcastle are no where near the level now what people think

True, but they game-raise the feck out of their current form normally against us - hence the pessimism.

Their whole squad could be bed-ridden by the bubonic plague, and they’d still come out on crutches for this game.

We've definitely dipped off a bit, so going to treat this as a free hit, where a draw would be a decent result, and a win amazing, but maybe the Geordies taking the front foot and coming at us will play into our hands.

I’d go back to a front 3 of Cunha, Mbeumo and Amad as I suspect we won’t have much of the ball. Sesko on as a substitute again to cause chaos if we’re chasing a goal or trying to break the deadlock. It’s going to be a miserable game but a win at all costs is all we need.
