How have we so many injuries, especially in defence, with just one game a week?!

If we're playing in Europe next season, we'll need to buy at least 6-8 players in the summer as well as keep several players that had been earmarked to move on.

If it's a central defensive pairing of Yoro and Heaven, I'd take a draw right now. Nothing against the lads, but I'm not confident with such an unexperienced pairing in a fixture like this.

One thing's for sure, they'll definitely be up for it. And the crowd could make things difficult for us as well. We'll need to soak up the first 15 mins of pressure without conceding.

I am sure we will score at least 2 against them but we need to stay compact in defense. Especially when it comes to standards we must do better.
There are goals in this one, should be fun.

Great opportunity today to create a gap to Liverpool + one (or both) of Chelsea and Villa. Injuries/Illness seem to be hitting both sides at the moment, so we just have to deal with ours. Newcastle away however won't be an easy fixture even if they're in bad form - just get the job done here, 2-1 with another Sesko winner.

Need to be physically up for this too, esp. in midfield.

Not just about winning top teams and turning up against bottom half team. It is the ability to continue to win. This is the real test.

A win would be superb for us and our chances for top 4. A draw not the worse result but we need to put in a good performance. Feel like Carrick may set us up the same as city and Arsenal as Newcastle will come at us and won’t sit back so we should have plenty of opportunities

I feel like this will be the game that brings an end to the undefeated run. However saying that, I did have a dream last night where we won 5-2 and Becks was in the stands watching, so what do I know?

I don’t know how many times I’ve read this.
« Good to win against [insert whoever we faced], the true test will come against [insert whoever we will face] »

You win some you lose some, we are on a superb run and I don’t think Newcastle is the real test. If we win we’ll still say this and that was not convincing and the next team will be a real test. If we lose we’ll just revert back to the doom and gloom of everything is shite, everyone should be sacked until we win the next game

I hope they'll do so. We'd feast on them.

Tough game. I feel like the performances have been deteriorating. And I keep expecting a loss. But, our best games have been against teams that attack us , so go figure.
    A draw?
    Or we scrape 2-1 win

If we don't have Maguire or De Ligt in the middle of defence we will lose. Yoro and Heaven have awful reading of the game and both switch off far too often. Letting their man go, not making the effort to close them down so they can have a free shot. They need someone in there with them in their ear the whole time and someone who will compensate as best they can.

Every game a test, ultimately, but Carrick has come through the hardest tests so far. If we win here, it'll be massive credit to him (generally) regardless of the quality of performance. This time of year, I'm not interested in the quality of performance over the result. Just get 3 points by any means necessary and then we have a 6 point cushion going into a break -- ten day break after this, then a twenty day break after the next two fixtures. If we can get 7 from 9 out of those next three fixtures we'll definitely finish third (we could even make it work it fewer points but may as well aim high).

People talk about quality of performance. Show me a side who is putting in ‘quality performances’ every week? Not Arsenal or City who are top of league!

Indeed, especially this time of year. Performances have dipped, mind, but this is the worst part of any season. Everyone is fighting for something, even if it's Wolves and they're nailed on to get relegated, they're playing like they have something to play for. It isn't easy this time of year. I'll take the points and worry about performances later.

 it’s been the real test every game since Fulham

We've looked at our best when we play against teams who don't sit with 10 behind the ball.

    City - Brilliant
    Arsenal - Brilliant
Fulham - Good (Sloppy towards the end)
Spurs - Very good. Controlled thoughout.

They're 4 teams who don't sit back. Then we went on a run against 'bus parkers'.

West Ham, Everton, Palace. All fairly poor performances, with some bright moments.

Newcastle won't sit back. We'll win and we'll look fantastic.

Everton definitely didn’t sit back. Had a lot of space, just didn’t capitalise until a bit of magic.

We should’ve also spanked Palace following the red, but didn’t capitalise then too. That’s the issue, we’re losing our clinical edge, but starting Sesko more should help that

We could drop Casemiro back to bring a bit of experience. I agree I don't wanna see Yoro and Heaven start together

Liverpool's loss basically took away any pressure to win, I expect our players to go into the game confident but relaxed, Newcaslte is awful now so we should be able to beat them

    Yap. Agree with you.

We say it so often, but we really need to get 3 points tonight as it would put is in an amazing position. I just don't see it - if you didn't watch either team but looked at the table and recent results, you would have us a clear favourites, but Newcastle play better than their results suggest. We play way worse than our recent results suggest.
I'd prefer Maz to play RB over Dalot tonight. Cuhna continues to confuse us with his natural position and if we were to rotate the front 4, I'd start Mbuemo and Amad in the wide positions with Sesko up top.
Hoping for 3 points but I think Carrick suffers his first United defeat tonight.

Got a bad feeling about this one. We have been quite sluggish at the start of matches lately, and Newcastle seem to really detest us and will likely fight tooth and nail in that first half at least.

If ever there's a game they shouldn't have their usual cup final performance, it's this one. They've 2 cup games against City and Barca coming up. They're doing nothing in this league so they should really be putting out their 2nd/3rd side here and letting us roll all over them

Think it might be really high scoring. 3-3 draw or something.

Do they? Whenever I’ve seen them they’ve looked woeful.

Sorry, moved it to the more apt thread.

Hardly half a team, they're missing Guimaraes and Schar, as maybe obvious starters. This is a serious test for Carrick.
No worries. Woltemade has the sickness bug going round, Ramsey looks like he'll just make it and Livramento won't make the game. Won't get a better chance than this. If we were missing Sesko, Casemiro, Maguire and Dalot, that would be huge.

Bruno from wish.com will play like its life or death kind of game

Hard game on paper, But at home against Manchester United egged on by the home fans, the onus will be on them to go for it and play right into our hands.
We need to be on it like we were against City and Arsenal.

Obviously worried about our lack of physicality/mobility in Midfield against theirs though. Would help if Bruno showed a bit of positional discipline to help out Mainoo and Casemiro, when needed.

So will the plan be to weather any early storm and then pick 'em off on the counter!?

Do we start Sesko or go for the 3-pronged attack from all angles with Mbeumo, Cunha & Diallo?
If we were providing quality crosses on a regular basis for Sesko to attack, I'd start him, but I think we are lacking in that department.
Fullbacks, say no more! Wide attackers, more often than not, looking to dribble or play 1-2s in the final third instead of whipping it in.

Hopefully Licha is being saved for this one!
(Wasn't he close to being ready last time around according to Carrick?!
Need his qualities going both ways, especially if Maguire is out and Yoro looking a bit fragile.
Should help having Maz in there though.
Hopefully Dalot is wearing football boots for this game.

We could drop Casemiro back to bring a bit of experience. I agree I don't wanna see Yoro and Heaven start together
I can see that happening if Maguire is out. Id much rather Casemiro and Heaven start though. Yoro is dodgy as feck at times. It would mean Ugarte and Mainoo in the middle though and that doesn't scream "control"

If Maguire starts then I think we'll win this. If Yoro and Heaven are our starting CBs then I think we'll struggle to get 3 points.

Is this the biggest game of the season now? Liverpool lost, one if not both of Chelsea and Villa will drop points. A win here really does put us in a great position.

    I’m nervous now.

We still play both Liverpool and Chelsea, both those matches have more impact than tonight. Three points tonight don't mean anything more or less than three points against Palace on the weekend

expecting to watch in wonder and question why Newcastle are so low in the league after an aggressive/committed performance from them.
