You can only deviate as much as your players allow, he has basically 0 options, with very inflexible limited players.
Sorry but that's nonsense. We were playing 10 men all second half and we made no use of it until the last 10 minutes.

Zirkzee improved us when he came on and amad could offer the energy and width we were sorely lacking but they came on so late. It really was poor management saying nothing of bringing on a semi retired malacia

I thought we would lose today. But my god, didn't expect this shambles.

It's not the game management aspect of it. I think the changes he made in-game were usually very good. But I've also been saying constantly we haven't been as good as our results suggest. People just got hyper fixated on the results as they usually do.

Loosing NEW (A) still isn't a huge deal but we need to understand if it's just a personnel thing or something deeper about the tactics before giving Carrick the job full time.
He takes far too long to make changes when things are clearly not working.

Against West Ham, stood on the sideline watching the same shite for 20 minutes after going behind before bringing Sesko on after 70 minutes. Way too long. He got lucky cos Sesko scored with the last kick of the game.

Tonight, how he could leave Mbeumo on for 75 minutes after that performance, I have no idea. His luck ran out tonight.

Because we allow him to by being slow, weak and timid in his area of the pitch. We’ve struggled with big bullies in midfield for ages like we did with Moussa Dembele to name one.

It helps of course when you have a ref that doesn’t think sarcastic clapping constitutes dissent which allowed him to stay on the pitch for the duration of the game rather than being sent off after 30 minutes.

The other notable bullying he did of us was the time he towered over Martinez to score against us, when he clearly batted the ball in with his arm and nobody bothered to check it in the VAR room.

Hes also for some reason one of those players that gets away with a lot more than the bulk of the rest. He commits a lot of one's where he leaves a bit
Extra in rather than wildly running into everything.

But similarly there were many positive changes he made as well. Just last game against Palace, he noticed the lack of width in the first half and changed Cunha's role at HT which gave us a lot of control in the game. I don't have a full list but he's constantly tweaking things game to game.

I'm not super worried about the game management aspect of it.

This is exactly the reason I still can't make my mind up about Carrick. The midfield is just genuinely terrible and gets consistently run through. How much can a manager / system really do with out a functional midfield?

As has been said I cannot blame Carrick, this is the hand he has been dealt, far too many of our squad are extremely poor Premier standard, possibly Championship level. But even allowing for the many substandard players, does not excuse the lethargy we witnessed tonight. The way we failed to stand up to the geordie shower was embarrassing. We, as fans know what to expect from them, the playacting, the time wasting, there are far too many of them to name, we are so naive, feeble and flimsy. We cloned the Everton home game even replicating the 10 man opposition. Why, Shaw excepted, do we not have a half decent full back, in fact top class players all over the pitch? Carrick cannot spin straw into gold. I am not saying give him the permanent manager job, but a bit more leeway and understanding that we do not have a full squad of top players.

We are bad enough to lose more, badly needed those 6 points between us
so are Liverpool, so are Chelsea, so are Villa. That’s why none of us are in the title race.

    Overall still doing ok.
However, getting beat by ten men over a full second half, does rattle the nerves and stokes the fears that still lurk under the surface.
I had assumed Carrick had saved Amad especially for this match; as good as they are individually, we needed more than three ' lone rangers' up front in static positions, with Bruno dashing in and out, it was even worse second half until you counted the players you would not have known we were one man up.
Back to the drawing board Michael!
