I think it will be completely understandable and actually somewhat sensible to rest some players for the Arsenal game after this. It's a little unfair on the traveling fans but I think everyone will understand if select players don't start now that we've seen Sanchez added to the already massive injury list and Pogba is suspended. That said, who can we realistically rest if no one else is back fit? Maybe Ashley Young since he's just played three in a week? Even if Dalot has been good in this little period, you'd say it's highly more likely that Young starts against Arsenal.

I can see us going with a back three to try and have a better chance against PSG's forwards and our lack of available midfield players:

    de Gea
    Bailly Smalling Lindelof
    Dalot Pereira McTominay Fred Shaw
    Lukaku Rashford
    ---
Romero; Rojo, Young; Garner; Gomes, Chong, Martial

Assuming this is what we're going to have to settle with. Ole said Martial had a chance of being in the squad for Southampton but they wouldn't take a risk if there was one. If he was close then, you'd imagine being on the bench for this is likely. If we somehow put in a performance and get that bit of luck, having him on the bench could sneak us through however unlikely it is right now. We'll probably find not find out until Tuesday morning if any other injured players are back, but the only one I can see making this game and being anywhere over 50% is probably Darmian (and I think he'd make the bench over one of the kids if he is fit).

    Red Card for Casemiro!
As long as we don't get battered, I couldn't complain against a loss. It would take a very good performance to get a draw. A win would be special, and would immensely boost Ole's stature worldwide, cementing his place as our manager for the next couple of years to come.

Going through by overcoming the 2 goal deficit at home? I'll be convinced that he is our Guardiola, and that he will win us the CL some day.

For reference, here's our away history against CL opposition in the knockout stages of the CL, all the way back to the 1999-2000 season:

    Mourinho
    17-18 - R16: Sevilla (A) / 0-0 D
    ---

    Moyes
    13-14 - R16: Olympiakos (A) / 0-2 L
    13-14 - QF: Bayern (A) / 1-3 L
    ---

    SAF
    12-13 - R16: Real Madrid (A) / 1-1 D

    10-11 - R16: Marseille (A) / 0-0 D
    10-11 - QF: Chelsea (A) / 1-0 W
    10-11 - SF: Schalke (A) / 2-0 W

    09-10 - R16: Milan (A) / 3-2 W
    09-10 - QF: Bayern (A) / 1-2 L

    08-09 - R16: Inter (A) / 0-0 D
    08-09 - QF: Porto (A) / 1-0 W
    08-09 - SF: Arsenal (A) / 3-1 W ***

    07-08 - R16: Lyon (A) / 1-1 D
    07-08 - QF: Roma (A) / 2-1 W
    07-08 - SF: Barca (A) / 0-0 D

    06-07 - R16: Lille (A) / 1-0 W
    06-07 - QF: Roma (A) / 1-2 L
    06-07 - SF: Milan (A) / 0-3 L

    04-05 - R16: Milan (A) / 0-1 L

    03-04 - R16: Porto (A) / 1-2 L

    02-03 - QF: Real Madrid (A) / 1-3 L

    01-02 - R16: Deportivo (A)/ 2-0 W
    01-02 - QF: Leverkusen (A) / 1-1 D

    00-01 - QF: Bayern (A) / 1-2 L

    99-00 - QF: Real Madrid (A) / 0-0 D

Only once in the last 20 years have we had a score good enough to overturn a 2-0 defeat at home in the CL - at Arsenal in the semi-final of 08-09.

Some players who started that day: VDS, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carrick; Ji-sung Park, Rooney, Ronaldo. On the bench: Berbatov, Giggs, Scholes, Tevez

In fact, I'm surprised to find out that we've never been at a 2 goal deficit or more at home in our entire history of European football. The 0-2 at home to PSG was Man United's heaviest defeat in any European game at home since 1956.

I'm all about the positivity Ole has brought to the club and I genuinely don't fear any opponent. However.. we're gonna get absolutely murdered with a midfield 3 of Pereira, Fred and McTominay.

It's honestly a lost cause, i'd play youngsters to avoid more injuries.

Surely Martial should be back for this. Ole said he could've been ready for the game today and now he's got 3 extra days. He should be back and hopefully Herrera can be back as well. It'll take a miracle for us, but in football they do happen. If we score first, you never know.
An early goal would make it very interesting.

They demolished Liverpool in Paris, so i am not expecting much.

I'm doubting people's commitment to Sparkle Motion
Being realistic and looking at our priority with the top four, FA cup and the injury problems we've got, I'd rather rest as many as possible without us getting beaten too badly. I know it's a crappy attitude to not play the strongest possible team, but there is a time and a place, and I don't think now is that time for prioritising an away PSG game where we are already 2 down with a depleted squad. It's probably the first time I'm being negative about any Utd game and I don't like thinking this way as it should be win every game mentality.

I'm worried for our tired players (mentally and physically tired) getting burnt out for the future weeks or picking up niggles before the Arse game and run in.

OGS has said they will try to win and take one game at a time, and I hope we can miraculously win this. Then fresh Pogs and hopefully Ander, Martial and Matic back at the weekend. And who knows how Martial is doing for Wednesday/weekend?

Go for the Champions League next season :nervous:

Of course we shouldn’t rest players who have barely played this season because of ’potential injuries’. This is the best we have, that’s what it is so let’s hope our best XI can get something out of this.

Struggling to give a shit tbh. Probably because I don't think we have a prayer.
Good to hear it’s not just me. Is it acceptable to send a reserve team to give some of our players a rest?

This should be a walk in the park for PSG. They are at home, have no pressure of going through, right. We have been struck with injuries. They should just go out there, attack and have a good time.....

Just give it a good go. It’s a massive task - like a 1 in 10 chance to me. Just go out there and see what happens.

We are going to get stuffed in this one but I absolutely love Ole being so positive about this . I also agree with his thinking that if we are in the tie with 30 minutes to go then you just never know.

With all the injuries, this one is a bit dead IMO. If everyone was fit you never know, 1 goal and they get nervous but nah. Wouldnt be against resting Rashford here either but he'll start I'm sure. Only the center backs really have any depth and options right now.

No Pogba, no chances created. Might as well rest the starters and give some European experience to the youngsters.

Please don't play your starters so there's no risk of another mini-remontada.

I don’t care what happens in Paris, as long as they come back without injuries. We have to beat Arsenal on Sunday.

    Team should be...

    --------------Romero--------------
    Darmian--Bailly--Smalling--Rojo
    ------------McTominay------------
    --------Fred---------Pereira--------
    Dalot--------Lukaku--------Young

Zero fecks given, give Rashford, Lindelof and Shaw the night off and hope for 0-0

Why don't you count a 2-0 against Shalke? 2-0 is perfectly good enough to overturn a 0-2 as it means penalties

What's the point of desperately trying to qualify for UCL, to only give up in UCL at the first sign of difficulty? It is highly unlikely, but weird things happen in UCL all the time. The same team lead 4-0 after the first match and got eliminated from UCL. They were leading 5-3 in aggregate (with away goal favorizing them) in the 85th minute and still went out. If Barca had the mentality of 'we are done, let's just rest Messi and co." they wouldn't have done history.

Give it a go and see what we can do.
“First sign of difficulty”! We’re losing 2-0 away from home with a number of a first choice players out anyway. It’s a bit more than that.

I definitely wouldn’t play the kids for this but I don’t think it makes much difference if Romero plays instead of De Gea and Rojo instead of Shaw.

Much rather we ensure we have a go next year.

Martial is probably still out. This team just chooses itself.
This. Given the injury and suspension situation going with 3-5 defence and pace to counter is the best option. I woukdnt even mind sone direct football to get us up the pitch. Keep it quiet first 20 min and nick first goal, who knows......

After watching his post match presser, fair to say Ole will field his strongest team.
That doesn’t mean he will risk anyone though. And honestly I wouldn’t expect him to say anything else. We certainly shouldn’t be playing any kids for this match.

I wouldn't rush Herrera or Matic back if there's a chance of either being fit. Arsenal next weekend is the must win for me.

We've seen them bottle it against Barca in 2nd leg .. Anything can still happen.

Try with pacy / fast-passing midfielders. High pressure in midfield and lot of balls to the wings to use Rashford / Martial's speed.

    De Gea
    Somethingsomethingbackline
    Dalot/Lingard - Scott - Pereira/Fred - Martial
    Lukaku - Rashford

I think we give them a good run for their money but their quality will be too much for us. I see it being 2-2.

Going to have to take it on the chin here, play a few kids, escape without too much of a beating and hopefully no injuries, not getting anything from this and the arsenal game has to be the priority.

Will Martial be fit for this game?

Also how long are Herrera and Matic out for? Heard Ole mentioned that Matic was out for a couple of weeks and that was before the Liverpool game. Haven't heard anything about Herrera.

Hope we get through this without getting battered and no more injuries.

I know it's sad and Man Utd should never just throw in the towel but it's a fact of where we are right now, the game against Arsenal is bigger.

Hopefully in the near future we'll be able to compete with the best in Europe again, but with all the injuries, with Pogba suspended it's mission impossible.

Pogba is suspended and if Herrera, Martial, Mata, Lingard, Matic, Sanchez, Valencia, Jones, Darmian & Romero are injured then

    Starting XI
De Gea - Bailly, Smalling, Lindelöf - Dalot, Pereira, McTominay, Fred, Shaw - Rashford, Lukaku

    Bench
Grant, Young, Rojo, Garner, Gomes, Chong & Greenwood

I don't see United getting the result needed to qualify. Overturning a two goal deficit isn't out the question. I'm just not convinced it's possible with so many injuries and Pogba's suspension.

The match against Arsenal is more important than PSG in my opinion.

The good news is that our defense is still whole and doing better. And that's not likely to change because...

This game has to be all about offense. Even if we give up a goal or five, we have to keep pressing to score because we have to win by 3, period.

As for saving them for Arsenal, one can hope that we'll get some of the injured back by then. Not that you want to push them too hard so soon.

Once again, if I were OGS, I would be curled up in the fetal position trying to figure a way out of this hole. But he is not me!

If only have we scored just one goal in the first leg...
But, still, if we score first, anything is possible.
One thing is certain - I trust Ole to provide the miracle, much more than I would've trusted Mou if he still was here.
