It’s not De Gea’s fault but he’s not good at penalties. Henderson should have been brought on.
I dare say he's as good as Henderson.
Afraid to say it but I believe we need a keeper as badly as we need a centre back, a right winger, and a centre forward.

I fear you could well be right on that one and let's not forget DM too, scary that we are potentially 5 PLAYERS short in the first XI

ALthough Villarreal was clearly a team at our reach, we lost the control of the game on the tactical side. A midfielde trio of Capoue, the experienced Trigueros and the passing ability of Parejo is a tough midfield for any team to face.

Having 3 midfielders they made sure they could have covering on full width at the midfield while defending. This would mean that or creative midfielders would have less time and space on the ball on Villarreal half and we needed our fullbacks to make overlaps and create passing options in order to create more space.
Unfortunately our full backs are not properly experts at doing that, and our manager decided to make substitutions thinking about who's gonna take penalties made us had little manouver margin to turn things arround.
Against a good organized block you can't rely on your players brilliance, even more in games like these where motivation levels are way higher.

Do you blame every keeper when a pen goes down the middle? Or just De Gea.

It's daft to argue the standard of pens in that shootout wasn't exceptional.
I mean the pens were good, some exceptional, but most of them were saveable, if the keeper guesses the right way - which De Gea hasn't done once in 40 tries. Neither keeper impressed, I do understand that it's super hard with the new rules, but De Gea's penalty technique is nowhere near good.

In our biggest game of the season our 3 top players were completely ineffective. Marcus was dreadful last night giving the ball away and running into players, Pogba was nonexistent in midfield and was outclassed by McTominay, and Bruno was marked out of match and spent too much time looking for space to get the ball.

Villarreal played the tactical game, scored the first goal and was content to either get another set piece goal or play for penalties. They made almost no attempt to attack with any sort of numbers and made the game very difficult to play which is what he should have done.

Yes his penalty record isn't good.

But I 100% disagree that most of Villareal's penalties were saveable.

There’s always next year and I think that the Europa League is within our reach. I’m not getting excited about the League or the CL, where better teams would dismantle us if they turn up, but the Europa and maybe the Carabou are possibilities. We need to take baby steps and concentrate on those competitions next year (assuming that we can finish third in the CL table).

I would rather get out of our CL group and get knocked out in the last 16 than drop into Europa again

Winning a trophy is crucial though in my view. We can’t win the CL, we can’t win the Title and in the FA Cup and the Carabou, we’ll eventually come up against one of the big boys (usually City), where we are distinct second favourites. At least in the Europa League, we come up against teams who are largely our equal (or in many cases inferior to us), so it’s a real chance of a trophy.

that's absolutely silly thinking and the type of mentality that would kill the development of the squad

Villareal was very poor, and losing this game is like losing to a team from the bottom of the premier league. They were 11 men behind the ball and parked the bus for most of the game. And they scored on the only chance, they had for 120 minutes. I still can not believe, how we did not win this game before penalties.

De Gea had 12 shots against him, and they all went in. His performance was the worst I can remember from a United player in any finale. He never looked like, he could save just one penalty. I my eyes, he is no longer a top keeper and has not been for some time now.

We've done that as well (Sheff Utd at O/T) this season. 15 minutes in I thought this looks like a typical match against lower league opposition. 11 players parked behind the ball hoping to capitalise on a balls up at the back.

Wrong team, wrong tactics, wrong subs, wrong keeper, wrong manager. Villarreal were determined to win that last night. We cruised about hoping Pogba or Bruno would do something special. Shocker of a performance.

Not wanting to be eliminated from our CL group is a bad mentality?
my apologies....i should have elaborated what i meant by that as it came off wrong

yes, you're right about not wanting to get be eliminated from our group as we absolutely should want to get out of our group. I just don't think it would be good for the lads long term development to "feel ok" with getting knocked out of the CL 16 as opposed to going to the Europa league and getting a chance to play in a final.

It's vital experience for the squad to feel that pressure of playing in a final win or lose. This is a very young squad with not a lot of european experience and need that challenge to help them grow as a player and as a squad.

This is a ridiculous way to think. Leicester city won the FA Cup, so it is a trophy we should and could win. The carabao cup has been ruled by city, so breaking their streak would be a huge morale boost and something we’re capable of doing. There is absolutely NO benefit, NONE whatsoever, to being knocked out of the group stages again to Europa. We accepted it this year but for this club to improve, we need to make the QFs of the champions league and hope we beat a big team along the way.

I would add a very inconsistent Rashford to that list. Almost all our performances rely on one of those three doing something special. Barely does this team stamp its authority on a game and that is largely down to several poor passers of the ball and otherwise skillful players who don't display expected level of footballing intelligence. This team needs a few players of likes of Carrick, Park-ji-sung - clever, efficient players who can be consistent with the task at hand.

Jesus Christ, how are we supposed to forget this game ever happened if the thread gets bumped.
