Agreed. But reading between the lines a little here, I think the article is a little tongue in cheek in that I suspect that Mr Hince suspects that the Glazer 'promise' does not carry any real intention behind it. (And how can it?)

As an aside, Gerrard in my opinion would never play for United. And although I wouldn't complain if he did, I'm not sure I'd respect the guy if he was willing take the money to play for a team he apparently despises. (Although I accept that Alan Smith arguably did the same, but under far different circumstances)

Same opinion, i think he is right to an extent, we may perhaps have cash to bring in one or two reputable players, but surely not the bottomless pit being depicted.

Show us your money, Joel
Paul Hince
AMONGST all those reassuring promises made by Joel Glazer last week there was one in particular which will have made Alex Ferguson's eyes light up.

And if Glazer is a man of his word, that particular pledge will shift the power-centre of English football away from London and back to Old Trafford. For openly and publicly, the youngest of Malcolm Glazer's sons promised that under the American regime Fergie "will be given all the resources for him to compete on the field at the highest possible level. We are going to provide him with what he needs to be successful."

No grey areas or smoking mirrors there. Glazer's words are crystal clear. There will be no cap on Ferguson's transfer kitty imposed by the new owners of Manchester United. What he asks for he will be given. And if the Fiery One doesn't take advantage of a heaven-sent opportunity like that, he's not the manager I've believed him to be all these years.

Why did Chelsea romp away with the Premiership title so easily last season? Does Jose Mourinho know more about managing a football team than Ferguson or Arsene Wenger? Is he a better man-motivator than the Scot or the Frenchman? No. On both counts modest Jose only thinks he is. Chelsea got their hands on the championship trophy last season purely because of Roman Abramovich's millions.

Now, for the first time since the arrival of the Russian in this country, Chelsea have a rival club which can match them financially - maybe even out-spend them. If Glazer's words are to be believed, and I have no reason to doubt them, that club is Manchester United. And I'll bet that right now, on the strength of that promise, Fergie is drawing up a list of world-class players that he intends to bring in.

And those players HAVE to be identified and signed within the next couple of weeks, make no mistake about that. The Reds will have to hit the ground running on the very first day of the new campaign or their hopes of reclaiming the championship crown will disappear like a puff of smoke.

In football, just as in life, nothing talks louder than money. Chelsea have reconfirmed that old adage ever since Abramovich pitched up at Stamford Bridge.

And with the promise of a virtually limitless transfer budget at his disposal and the wage structure that goes with it, players of the very highest quality will flock to Fergie's side like bees around a honey-pot, you can be sure of that.

And for all those fine words about building for the future, the blunt truth is that the Reds need an injection of quality to dislodge Chelsea. Only one department of Ferguson's team operated efficiently last season and that was the defence, which is bizarre considering the costly goalkeeping blunders .

In midfield Roy Keane is no longer the marauding box-to-box driving force he was at his peak, while Paul Scholes, by his own admission, had his most disappointing season since breaking into Ferguson's senior side. And the sharp end of attack is another area which must have been giving Ferguson sleepless nights last season. On paper the Reds had the most lethal and costly strike force in the Premiership. The best part of £60m spent in linking-up Wayne Rooney, Alan Smith and Louis Saha with Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Once again, an unpalatable truth has to be faced. That massive financial gamble failed to produce the expected dividend. Yes, injuries took their toll on van Nistelrooy and Saha. Yes, Rooney provided some unforgettable magic moments. But a £60m strike-force which struggled to get past the 50 goal mark over an entire season has, unarguably, not provided value for money.

Fergie, over the next few weeks, has got to use Glazer's millions to strengthen those problem areas. And when he does, which new players can we expect to see wearing the red shirt when the merry-go-round starts revolving again next month? Top of Ferguson's wish-list will almost certainly be the Ghananian midfielder Michael Essien, who is playing for French club FC Lyon and an obvious replacement for the willing but ageing Keane. Lyon have already turned down a £16.75m bid for Essien from Chelsea and say that they would only consider selling their prize asset if a "ridiculous" bid materialised.

Okay, Alex. Call Lyon’s bluff. Take advantage of the Glazer promise. Use some of their millions. Make Lyon a “ridiculous” offer they can’t refuse. Pinch a world-class player from under Chelsea’s nose. If not Essien, then how about Steven Gerrard? Is there a better midfielder anywhere in this country than the Liverpool skipper? Few players could step into Keane’s shoes. Gerrard is one of those few.

There is only one conclusion to be drawn from Liverpool’s failure to agree on a new contract with the England star – they want to cash in on him. Would Liverpool allow their biggest and most popular player to move to Old Trafford? If the money is right they would.

Would Gerrard agree to join the Reds? Same answer to the same question. Money talks, and with the Glazer millions behind him, Ferguson can now talk every bit as loudly as Mourinho.

Can Fergie allow van Nistelrooy the time to regain his match fitness and penalty-area sharpness at the start of the new season? The answer to that question is “No”.

Ferguson has long coveted Michael Owen but would not sacrifice Cristiano Ronaldo to bring the England hit-man to Old Trafford in the swap deal proposed by Real Madrid.

Fergie doesn’t have to lose Ronaldo to end Owen’s exile in Madrid. With the financial backing of the Glazers, Ferguson can now have his cake and eat it at the same time. Real are prepared to part company with England’s premier goal-scorer, that much is obvious. They are just waiting for the right offer. Rooney and Owen in the same club side. Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?

But if Fergie wants to add extra pace to his attack, Owen isn’t the only fish in the sea. If he’s after a jet-propelled striker, how about the Tottenham flier Jermain Defoe who has made no secret of the fact that he would relish the chance of playing in the Champions’ League.

How many of those players will be in Fergie’s starting line-up for the start of the new season? He doesn’t take me into his confidence when it comes to transfers but it was encouraging to see David Gill suggest that United are going to sign at least one more player soon.

What I do know is that with the financial backing he’s been promised by the Glazers, Ferguson can at last compete on a level playing field with Mourinho.

Now, perhaps, we will see over the coming season which of the two is the better manager. And on that score, I’d back a bad-tempered Scot against a Portuguese prima-donna any day.

Do you agree with Hince? Have your
