It'll depend a lot on the opposition I'd imagine. Regarding who will play with who.

Whatever formation 343 or 433. Welbeck will do well in this system because of his great link up play. Welbeck has a lot of things in his ability which managers will love him. The question is does LVG has a ball to drop Rooney or RVP to play Welbeck in his favour position. We knew that Sir Alex has it by drop Rooney just to play Welbeck in his favour position. The goal he scored yesterday is actually still nothing compare to his EPL debut goal. But I would like to see more of those cracking goals to come Welbz.

And the goal he scored against Derby in the Carling Cup, which is what it was called at the time.

His pressing ability will be more important in this system, I would think. He, Rooney and Hernandez all work hard to chase wide, which they'll have to do a ton of in this system. Also, with us luring teams forward a bit he'll have more space in behind, which should suit him better. He benefits a lot from this formation shift.

I don't believe balls is what is required to play Welbeck ahead of Rooney & RVP in his favoured position. I believe what is required to do that is utter stupidity.

like many said above, if welbeck improves with his finishing and composure infront of the goal, he is going to be a top striker. his movement, link up play and reading of the game are excellent but most of the time his finishing will let him down badly.

given that the first few times i saw him was when he scored that wonder goal against stoke(if i am not mistaken) and another wonder goal in the league cup(very henry esque), if back then someone said to me that even in 4 or 5 years time his finishing is one of his weakness, i would not believe it then.

It ain't about balls mate it's the numbers, if Welbeck posts the numbers that justify his inclusion then he will knock one of them out . At the moment he doesn't score or assist enough ....

I think Welbeck will be key as one of the two up top. Its imperative that one of the two has pace (amongst other things). As good as they are Rooney and RvP together don't have that.

Edit: I thought he played well yesterday. Good one touch link-up play and took his goal well. Nice to see he decided early to take the shot, sometimes he has a tendency to take the ball then decide what to do and over complicate things a tad but he looked good yesterday. I love Welbeck.

I am so hoping and waiting for him to improve his finishing. He can be such an important and lethal player if he improves on finishing. Great player to have in squad and pretty sure he won't be sold.

That could all change if he continuously gets to play up top - in his favoured position.

But as we know you need to do/ be something special to force a manager's hand when people like RVP and Rooney are concerned . We are talking about ten year veterans with stellar scoring records.

They both have stellar scoring records, but I can imagine Van Gaal will do what's best for the team. If he feels the team clicks more with Welbeck next to one Rooney or Van Persie, I have no doubt he'll drop one of them. He's forever going on about the team and not individual records.

Finishing and decision making in the box needs to improve still. But literally everything else in top notch.

His tracking back is a game changer. He steals the ball and tackles much better than Kurt, Rooney, Tevez etc. But we are lol obsessed with stats and Danny needs to improve this.

Welbeck looked like his usual self in that pre-season friendly and not what he was under Moyes. Same goes for pretty much everyone else in the team, but Welbeck in particular was very effective with the extra freedom he was afforded.

His movement dragged the Galaxy defenders around and gave Mata and Rooney quite a bit of space. Also, he and Mata linked very well, with Welbeck dragging away defenders and then running into space. Him playing up front in a more free role can be beneficial to the team. Ultimately, though, he's battling against Rooney, van Persie, and Chicharito, all of whom aren't slackers. He'll really have to impress van Gaal to become a regular in the first team (either that or van Gaal will drop one of the older players to provide more match time to Welbeck akin to what he did with Muller vs. Klose and Toni).

I expect Welbeck to be an important player for us this season. His pace and workrate provides something different to all our other options upfront. Even last season where we largely struggled he got a good goal return when Moyes gave him a run up front and I'm sure if Van Gaal gave him a similar chance he'd step up.

That is the ideal situation and believe me, I'd like nothing more than to see Danny getting a fair chance in his preferred position but it's he that has to make the case for his inclusion not Van Gaal . I'm sure currently a Rooney/RVP fight is not one that he wants to pick so the onus is on Danny to make it necessary for him to drop one of the two. Dropping either of the two without a convincing football case is more likely to drive a huge wedge within the squad right right now.
I feel that Welbeck has reached the point where he has to prove his worth in solid gold not just the fact that he is our first academy striker since 89. He's got to pull it together and he has the chance this season because historically Robin and Wayne miss considerable portions of the season through injury. He should utilize those opportunities and build on the good performances otherwise we will sign another striker in the next eighteen months and his chance would be gone.

If RVP and Rooney don't play good enough together up top, and it's better for the team to put in Welbeck, then that should be more than enough to convince Van Gaal to drop one of them.

That's exactly what he did last season, scoring something like 6 in 6, only to get dropped when RVP returned. Can't expect consistency from the lad if that keeps happening.

Yeah I felt for him then, I think he had like one bad match I don't remember which ( between Chelsea or Sunderland in the COC ) and Moyes cast him away like used condom. He was sensational in the few weeks beforehand. I don't doubt that the material is there talent wise and if he scores on a consistent basis then he is likely to take that spot especially under Van Gaal .
