He was fantastic then and that was peak of his value. He's never going to be able to stay fit.

It's like Chelsea selling Mata when his value was still high. Rafael has always had poor fitness and been a tad rash defensively.
It seemed like he got over his injury issues in 12-13. And Rafel's aggression is more of an asset than a weakness.

I meant by those who say LvG needs another summer, he’s still cleaning up the mess left by Moyes or that Fergie left him a terrible squad. At some stage it has to be LvGs team so we can move on and focus on the current squad, instead of focusing on the past.
Its his team but that does not mean he doesnt need more windows to get it nailed down. Thats the way I see it anyway.

We are talking about an extension for him, mate. Blows my mind.

I am hoping that given his "good" form someone will take a punt on him. Lot of desperation in the lower rungs of the league. Newcastle or West Ham or someone to the rescue.
There would be alot of names before young on the out list if he continues this form until the season finishes.....!

I understand the anger but I would like to point out that right now we see the benefits from playing consistent the same player at right back. LvG probably thinks he can’t get the same consistency form Rafael (despite being much better player offensively, defensively there isn’t much between them right now I’d say). And to be honest it’s understandable. He’s gone IMO.

Regarding other players I don’t think that’s clear who will be sold. Valencia and Young will probably stay, I suppose it might be difficult to get better squad players considering their experience in the league. Considering their status and wages, they won’t complain if we find someone better to play ahead of them (hopefully we do). Fellaini I’m not sure, we will be in for a market for a box to box to take his place in the team but maybe there is room for him too. Evans should go IMO to make place for an experienced CB, but that’s not so obvious because of Louis obsession with left footers on the left side.

Not sure about Mata really, I think he isn’t adaptable enough for van Gaal’s methods.

Manchester United ready to sell Rafael after right back fails to impress Louis van Gaal

United also retain a keen interest in Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne, while reports in Spain claim they are locked in a two-way battle with Real Madrid for Porto's Brazilian right back Danilo.

Rafael, last seen in the 2-0 FA Cup win at Yeovil on January 4, will have 12 months remaining on his contract at the end of the summer.

A number of clubs in his homeland are interested, with Cruzeiro thought to be leading the charge.

Would be a shame to see him go back to Brazil. Do Porto have a replacement lined up for Danilo? Could be perfect for Rafael

Just gets better and better. Our only natural right back but let's sell him.

I reckon he should go to a decent club in La Liga. His career could really go two ways once he leaves and I love the guy so want him to do well. Hopefully he finds the right club to develop and find some stability. I confess to not knowing too much about the lineups of the Spanish teams outside of the big three, but if anyone like Valencia, Sevilla or Villareal could do with a good right back it would be a good destination for him.

We've got rid of a lot of deadwood already in the last 18 months. The only names that spring to mind at the moment are Rafael, Evans, Hernandez, Lindegaard and Nani as well as some of the members of the current first team (Valencia, RVP, Jones?) many of which are debeatable.

Ideally, I'd like to see us go into next season with something like this:

GK: De Gea, Valdes, Johnstone
Defence: Rafael, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, McNair, Shaw, New RB, New CB
Midfield: Blind, Carrick, Herrera, Fellaini, Di Maria, Januzaj, Nani, Mata, Young, New CM
Attack: Rooney, van Persie, Wilson, New CF, New LW

With those in bold as our first XI.
No room for Nani in first XI?

It'd be odd if he did pitch up at a Brazilian club. At his best he's one of the better RBs in the PL. He could easily play for a very good side, even allowing for the injuries and rashness/inconsistency.

I think Rafael has already got his head around leaving this summer. If he is fit and was trying his hardest to impress on the training pitch, I can't for the life of me see why he wouldn't get given a chance. Either his attitude in training isn't impressing LvG or his injury record is too much for LvG to think it's worth giving him another contract.
Lets face it, he will probably want a healthy and lengthy contract which would be stupid for the club to give him, given his injury record.
I'd like to see him given a run in the team, now he is fit, just to prove if he can stay fit and make a difference - I doubt I will see it.
If he is sold, then the club MUST buy another RB as AV and PM are not the answer for any success next season.

Will be sad to see him go, but we won't miss him.

Tony is doing a fine job of deputy right back, and he's pretty much always available.

Its incredible that, Rafael, a standout player from our 2012/13 title winning season looks as if he's going to be sold. Rafa is a right back who has gone up against the likes of Ronaldo, Bale, Hazard, Sterling and so on and has come out on top. Incredible that some people think he should be punished for occasionally letting his passion overflow. I wonder what those same people would have thought of Big Pete, Keano, Ince, Sparky and so on, even Choccy wasn't averse to dishing it out. Then people moan about the lack of strong personalities and leaders at our club?

I haven't seen a single post along those lines. Maybe you could quote one?

I would prefer we kept him around but signed some competition.

His contract situation is tricky though.

Yeah look at Clyne's thread you'd be amazed by some comments..

I take Valencia as solid option now he got better at defending and really is solid this season, nothing special but has done a good job so far.
Rafael is still better but let Valencia play ahead of him when he's in such form and put Rafael on the bench. I guess we have got two very good players on that right hand side. It's almost like at City side Kolarov and Clichy, almost. Valencia solid, 29yo, injury-free player and still promising 24! year old Rafael who can fill the games when Valencia's not fit and other way around.

The third RB can be either van Gaal's McNair project or Young as backup. We are well set. Selling 24 old player of that quality? Nonsense. If there was a player of really high quality, young top prospect then we can talk about that but there is noone out there I can see in contention.

Never been a big fan of Rafael and would like to see him replaced, but he is fit right now and his lack of playing time is just criminal.

Could see him being a real asset for someone like Spurs where he would be a instant starter for them. I can't see him going to another European country.

Quite ridiculous that he's just been frozen out just like this.

Considering how poor Valencia was against Arsenal, I guess if Rafa doesn't play against Spurs it'll be the final nail in the coffin.

Valencia, Young, Smalling, Evans, Jones, Fellaini, Falcao, RVP.

Clearout.
I would keep Smalling from that bunch of players, even if it is just because of numbers (2 new signings as first choice, Rojo as third and Smalling as fourth). Agree about the others.

So according to all the papers, we're linked to sign:
Danilo, Coleman, clyne, marquinhos, varane, Hummels, laporte, strootman, pogba, depay, robben, Cavani, ings, dybala

Anyone I'm missing? Wouldn't be surprised if we signed one right back like clyne, 2 center backs like marquinhos and laporte, depay and then dybala hopefully.

Falcao, Rafael, Evans, Jones/smalling, will all probably be sold.

He has that sort of personality and attitude that most United fans love. Passionate, fiery, attacking, aggressive and loves the club.

True but we can't rely on him because if he gets injured then tony V plays RB and all hell breaks lose, if he was happy to be a bench player then I'd like to keep him but realistically there's no point.

Selling Jones would be idiotic. Give him a new contract and one more year and then move him on if he fails to improve, there are lots of clubs that would pay a good fee for him. I think Evans will be gone and we will only sign one new centre back.

Why's there no point? He'd be a fantastic alternate RB if he was happy with the role. I doubt he would be but who knows. It'd be a step towards 2 strong full back options like Chelsea and City have, which is the direction we should be heading in.

There's no point in keeping him as an alternate RB with his injury record. Sort of defeats the point of having someone reliable to deputise.
