Honestly, seeing him cry like that made me laugh my cock off...

It was like watching someone have a nervous breakdown, on live tv...

SAF really was a pioneer of the whole trolling movement... taking the whole WUM thing to a new level.

"Hmmm... I'll just tell all the journos that teams are rolling over for Newcastle and gifting them 3 points but they treat every game against United as a Cup Final... that should do it!"

What a legend.

I remember I was working in a bank at the time, for my sins (worst job I ever had, possibly), and this Geordie used to come in regularly giving it all "we're going to win the league, United have gone, ha ha ha!", then he suddenly stopped coming in.

Made a mockery of Alan Hansen that season as well with the Fledglings.

You'd almost think that Fergie hated scousers...

Loved Keegan. Cant fault the man for how passionate he was and how honest his approach to the game was. Pure attacking football all the way. Sure it may not have won him anything, but that Newcastle side was damn entertaining.

What a day! Knew we'd won it there and then. After the way the 95 season had collapsed for us, the 96 turnaround was wonderful.

I toyed with the idea of "20 years ago today", but I think the title I chose works much better. Also, means we can laugh at Keegan all over again
'Well it was 20 years ago today.
Kevin Keegan threw the league away.

Kevin Keegan threw the league away.
He talked for more than a while
And he gave ol' Fergie a smile
So let me introduce to you
The reason for Geordie tears ...
Lonely Keegan's empty trophy stand

Still remember it to this day. I burst out laughing when he did it and still burst out laughing every time it's mentioned. Top Fergie banter!

KEEGAN: Evening.

KEYS: Three weeks ago we saw you, and you were absolutely devastated and I think a lot of people felt for you. How do you feel tonight?

KEEGAN: I feel okay (laughter).

GRAY: What was the first 15 minutes like for you Kevin, anyway?

KEEGAN: I didn't think we played very well at all, first 15 minutes. I was disappointed because looking at the lads I got the feeling they were really up for it, but we then started to... once we got the goal, we started to play a bit and then second half, I mean, we never really got passing it, we gave it away, players that normally don't give it away were giving it at away, and at the end I said to Terry (McDermott), '1-0 will do it tonight'.

KEYS: Why was all that happening Kevin, do you think? Tension on the night?

KEEGAN: Yeah, I don't think you can discount it. I mean, we just want to keep our hopes alive, and a lot of things have been said over the last few days, some of it almost slanderous, and we've never commented, we just got on working, trying to pass the ball like we do in training...

KEYS: What do you mean by that? That people have been having a go at you and your team?

KEEGAN: No, no - I think things have been said about... I think you've got to send Alex Ferguson a tape of this game, haven't you? Isn't that what he asked for?

GRAY: Well, I'm sure if he was watching it tonight Kevin he could have no arguments about the way Leeds went about their job and really, they tested your team.

KEEGAN: And we're playing Notts Forest on Thursday, and he objected to that. Now, that was fixed up four months ago, we were supposed to play Notts Forest, I mean that sort of stuff, we're bigger than that.

KEYS: That's part and parcel of the psychological battle isn't it, Kevin?

KEEGAN: No, that's... when you do that with footballers, like he said about Leeds, and when you do things like that about a man like Stuart Pearce, I've kept really quiet, but I'll tell you something, he went down in my estimation when he said that.

We have not resorted to that, but I'll tell you, you can tell him now if you're watching it, we're still fighting for this title, and he's got to go to Middlesbrough and get something, and... and... I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them. Love it.

It was never a fair battle, to be honest. Kevin Keegan is notoriously emoitonal, and prone to walking out when the job gets to much. Where as Ferguson is the master, and will eat you up if he smells a weakness. It wouldnt have been as magical, but if we didnt have the amount of injuries we had in mid season (around Christmas time was horrendous and we lost a lot of ground) Newcastle would never have been 12 points clear.

Was a year 1996 was, though. All I seem to think of is the sun shining. The Double and Euro 96 was an incredible period.

I was only 9 at the time and I remember thinking that he's completely lost the plot

Was that the season Newcastle were 12 points clear?

Born loser, if the going gets tough, get out of the kitchen. Did the same with England.
The guy won league titles, European Cups, 100 England caps and the European footballer of the year award, and you're calling him a born loser? Seriously?
