Could be movement in our chase for a new manager

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed contract talks with Maurizio Sarri have broken down, saying that Sarri ‘has not responded to their contract offer and has now ran out of time”

Sarri has also spoken to press practically confirming his Napoli departure stating that ‘he won’t be managing another Italian side’.

What do you mean by "pull the plug?"

The club is worth a huge sum. Maybe £750m maybe more I don't know. If his visa isn't renewed, and that really is a big if, he can still run the club from abroad. Alternatively he would sell. That is the worst he could do. Can the Government snatch his assets? I suspect not. They have been allowing him to have a business up until now and all that has happened is a breakdown in diplomatic relations.

Fairly sure the money Chelsea spent that they didn't have (during the take over years) was taking out in loans. £952m debt*, if recalled, would bankrupt them.

I think you re being a little naïve, if Roman wanted out of the club he could very well sell off its main assets, best players for a short term return. Then sell the club to the highest bidder, to say the worst he could do is jut sell it is wrong. Not saying it will happen but its possible. Look what Learner did to Villa after his stock crashed.

I didn’t say he could only sell the club, but that’d it’d be the best way. If you look at the assets and then sell the club, I don’t think you’re getting as much if you sell the club outright.

Villa weren’t a massive global brand. Asset selling would be ridiculously stupid business. If Chelsea was ever sold it would be as one of the world biggest clubs with a relatively smooth path to the Champions League and a brand you can sign up lucrative deals on. Selling all the best players would destroy that business potential and just be basically dumb.

I said it was highly unlikely but possible. What I think will happen, if he doesn't get his visa, is he will stop investing so highly and look for an immediate buyer.

No way of telling really. The guy is a massive football fan as well as the owner, so his decision making could be unpredictable. He’s never really talked publicly much, so impossible to say what he might do in any given situation.

Any indication what approach Chelsea will take this summer? Will they invest heavily or continue with signing players like Drinkwater, Barkeley etc?

Probably the most exciting club to watch this window imo since you don't know what direction they will take.

edit: on top of this don't they have questions surrounding Hazard, Courteois etc?

Looks like they are going for Sarri.

At least the football they will play would be unreal. Players will know where to pass to automatically. Courtois might be the only player there atm I might doubt in adapting as he isn't that great with his feet but we'll see. Hazard should jump up a level under him. Interesting to see if they get a DM as well.

Is Roman going to look at himself and realize last summer can’t happen again? Or just say, this is how we’re doing things now? The only people I’d say that would have bids automatically rejected would be Kante, Rudiger, Azpilicueta and Christensen. Everyone else has a chance of leaving. Since Roman wants to fund transfers through selling players, there’s potential for a lot of people leaving like Fabregas, Willian, Pedro, 2/3 Belgians, etc. On top of that, Sarri wants to play against the Chelsea way. Normally the World Cup is just enough excitement, but the potential turnover at Chelsea and the potential of playing attacking football makes it twice as fun.

Funny to see what has happened to Chelsea this season. So soon after a record breaking (til City) season they wind up in 5th with a series of ignominious losses, including being dumped from the CL early and a face saving FA Cup .

Sound familiar?

The pattern I'm seeing is this - sell experienced players the caf considers problematic or geriatric, look for value in the market and then wind up suffering.

The premier league has too much money to be bargain hunting.

I can’t see this Sarri thing going well at Chelsea tbh: he is a very rigid coach with no actual pedigree to command respect from a complex dressing room, he can’t speak any English and is quite old already. It seems more an awkward Guidolin / Mazzarri kind of appointment to me than a more balanced Conte / Mancini / Ranieri.

Why do you say he can't speak English? I read a report which said he used to work in finance in London and that his English was fine.

no reason apart of his diminutive answers to this direct question from recent pressers for napoli... it could be he was playing the game before saying goodbye
