“He never had the Cantona or Andy Cole peacock quality, or the confidence of Teddy Sheringham…”.

That doesnt say Sheringham is actually himself a peacock.

Though Cole doesnt fit my description either.
Cole was the one I was meant to refer to. No idea why my brain went down the Sheringham route. It’s Friday, I’ll blame it on that!

If we break it down, Chicarito certainly had the 'pea' quality. Those who have the 'cock' quality, well, that deserves it's own thread.

This makes me laugh. I really hope the expression sticks and that it becomes normal to talk about players being peacocks.

It's kinda strange with Berbatov, he kind of had that aura at Spurs, but somehow couldn't maintain it at United.

Fergie mentioned in this autobiography that Berbatov was lacking in self-assurance. “He never had the Cantona or Andy Cole peacock quality, or the confidence of Teddy Sheringham…”.

So, which current strikers of ours have this “peacock quality” and who should we go for to get one, or two, more?
Sure as hell doesn't look like it now...what with all his social media posts, especially the one today about "making his girl smile in the morning"

It’s open to interpretation, but if we consider Ferguson’s understanding of the term, particularly as we are using it as a reference for this thread, then I don’t believe being an extrovert is necessarily an essential aspect of it.
Exhibit A: Lionel Messi

Thought it was about Alan Peacock, 60s Leeds. Before Mick Jones and Sniffer Clarke who... oh never mind

I wouldnt really consider Messi a peacock type player either to be honest. It is not synonymous with "really good player", it is a different quality altogether.

But yeah, my definition could be off, or could be different to SAF's. Or he could have said Cole in the heat of the moment when he really meant someone else. Or he could have been bigging Cole up for his own reasons, like when he said Jones would be the new Duncan Edwards, or Wes Brown was the best defender England had even seen (or something maybe slightly less OTT).

I dont see how you can compare something to a peacock without it having something to do with how demonstrative or extrovert they are. That is basically the first and only association most people would have with a peacock.

Also, Katy Perry wants to see your peacock cock.

Its a bizarre one, Cole. I cant think of any definition of "peacock player" that he would qualify for. Yorke was more peacockish than him, but that's not to say he was one either.
It must be that Cole always thought of himself as the best and went into matches confident about scoring etc. Stuff that only the manager really sees by interacting with him at those times.

It sounds like Berbatov didn't have that confidence about him going into matches

That's why I love Rashford, lots of people think that he is too greedy, too cocky but as a striker it's a great quality, when he misses you don't have to worry about him not taking his chance at the next opportunity.
Actually you do have to worry. And you can put it to the test. When games start. First 20 minutes watch rashford. If he is good in the first 20 minutes. He is usually good the whole of that match. If his first few moves don’t come off in the first 20 minutes. He is usually shit and frustrates the whole game.

Pogba is our only player with peacick/star swagger whatsoever.

We have a team of very normal people.

That isnt necessarily a bad thing.

Who were the "peacock" players in the 99 team? If we disregard what SAF said about Cole.

Beckham was a celebrity but I dont think he qualifies, does he? Keane would chin you if you called him a peacock player.

You dont need these players if you have a well balanced team.

All of them were leaders and winners. Schmeichel, Keane, Beckham, Yorke, Solksjaer, Sheringham, Butt.

Rashford. I'll give him that, away from what his performance is.

Again, the self confidence thing is a bit of a red herring. The peacock implication says to me this is not an inward looking thing, it is not (merely) about your own belief in your own ability, there is something demonstrative about it. Peacocks are flamboyant, they are extrovert. They have self confidence, but the kind of self confidence that can be seen from far away, the kind that cannot be ignored. The kind that has an affect on other people looking at them, not on themselves alone.

It is one thing to believe you are really good at football. Martial has that, as does Rashford. But neither of them are extrovert type players. Neither has that kind of personality that screams "LOOK AT ME" the way peacocks do.

Ronaldo had it, but I think Cantona and Ibra are actually the best examples of it from my lifetime.
I'd actually put them all on par in the peacock stats.
Ronaldo if anything actually out peacocked Zlatan when they went head to head.[/QUOTE]

A strut, a swagger. A certain "look at me, I am the centre of attention on this football pitch" arrogance.

That is how I interpret it anyway.
Exactly. The way Eric just walked into OT and owned the place, same with Zlatan. It's the mentality that, this is where I belong now watch me go.

You can be self confident without speaking much or acting like Cantona used to.
Martial definitely isn't lacking in the self confident department for example yet he's pretty reserved in public.

Big dick energy?
Never heard this term before, and frankly it sounds absurd to me. So in spite of having contributed to this thread already, I'm just going to go with what this person said and bow out of this thread...thank you very much
