Warner hit a net bowler on the head, who had to be taken to the hospital. The bowler was fine later and Warner was pretty shook up . That might explain his strange innings. Especially after the shock of losing one of your teammates to a bouncer.

While this might be true , he scored 89 off 114 Vs Afghanistan and made 43 off 55 Vs England in the warm up game . Even in the IPL towards the later part of his stint he had 2-3 knocks where he batted very slowly

He just couldn't get used to the pitch for whatever reason, his timing was off, it's surprising he managed to get a 50.

Australia played the whole match in a very generic way when you need to be way more tactical to beat this Indian team . This Indian team is very strong and you have to attack the few weaknesses they have to have any chance. While bowling you have to be ultra aggressive against the openers , if the Indian openers bat 10+ overs you are pretty much screwed . While batting you just can't play out Bhuvi , you have to go after him & Pandya. Obviously it's not so easy to do but you just can't score 12 runs off 5 overs against Bhuvi and hope to chase down 350 with Bumrah and the two wrist spinners around.

Amla really is a shadow of the player he used to be. That being said, Rally

Christ I've had a tragic round
I forgot to make any transfers from round 2 and have actually done better than when I was picking the team

Amla is done isn't he. SA need a rebuild, I've heard Markram rated as a possible future opener and captain. Who else have they got coming through?

Reeza Hendricks has been opening quite frequently and was unlucky to miss out on selection for the world cup. He is not nearly as talented as Markram though.

Good post. However, I do think our openers so far this tournament have batted magnificently well and deserve more credit. I know some called Rohit's innings yesterday laborious but he did bat according to the situation. I think both our openers have had to face some great opening spells, first from Rabada and then yesterday Starc and Cummins hardly gave them easy sniff. That makes their innings even more special. I hope they continue giving us good platform for our middle order batsmen to capitalize.

We were lucky vs. SA. Dhawan got out and Rohit had a couple of dropped catches. But that's the thing with them, if you don't get them out early they end up giving a massive platform to the middle order. Rohit should have gone on and gotten back to back 100s tbh, got out at the wrong time after getting set. Yesterday the strategy was close to perfect, Aussies have a good bowling attack with two very good frontline bowlers, and given our middle order being unreliable, their only hope was to get the openers and we simply played them out. Sending in Hardik at 4 worked really well as well.

Of course for openers to do well they need luck, just like Warner was lucky to not be bowled the first delivery he faced but you have to score big after you get those luck which both of our openers have done so far. Rabada the other day bowled an insane spell and deservedly got the wicket of Dhawan. Any opener would have been out the way Rabada was bowling the other day. Rohit was lucky but he wasn't playing foolish shots. He was mostly under control. Same with Dhawan yesterday. After the early jitters he seemed very comfortable. He wasn't trying poke every other delivery and playing outlandish shots. Both in their centuries have looked composed and in control which gives me confidence.

Yep definitely. Have been saying for a while that these two being in form will be invaluable, especially Rohit who is the GOAT when it comes to changing gears once getting set and it would be the key for us scoring big totals especially when batting first.

I'm not sure if I'm a fan of consolidating in the first 10 and saving the acceleration for the last 10. It's counter intuitive to me.

There's 2 men outside of the circle in the first 10, 4 between overs 10-40 and 5 in the last 10. You need to make use of the first 10, and I don't think it's that damaging to be 1 down at the end of the first 10 as long as you get 60+ runs.

It's not something we have to do against all teams. SA and Aus both had dangerous opening bowlers.

It depends on the quality of the bowling also. If you have a spell like that of Rabada or like yesterday from Starc and Cummins then I would prefer 40-0 after 10 than 50-2 or 60-3 after 10. You have to play according to the situation too. I agree when the bowlers are giving you freebies then it is better to just punish them and put some extra pressure on them but so far both the opening spells that Indian openers have faced have been great bowling so it's not easy to go bang bang from outset. Sometimes that can definitely work and we can see even top bowlers under pressure but most of the times it backfires and you go 2 or even 3 down very quickly like Aussie themselves found against Windies when they were 36-4.

South Africa are out of the tournament if they draw here right?
I don't think so. They still have 5 more games after today so if they win all they can be 10 points(presuming they lose today too). Not sure 10 might be enough but they still might have chance to sneak in to top 4 if other results fall their way.

Agree . You are also in a terrible position if you lose your openers after they have taken all the time to get set . Luckily for India these two openers succeed more often than not if they play 10+ overs but India had 22 after 7 yesterday batting first which is not really ideal if you lose a wicket at that stage

Australia should probably pick an extra bowler and play Ncn at 7 and Cummins at 8 . Carey is more than good enough to bat at 6 and that makes them a stronger team imo. It won't happen though and they will probably drop Ncn which will make their bowling only slightly better but won't solve the 5th bowler issue.

I think they have a 3rd bowler problem rather than a 5th bowler. You're not going to achieve anything if your third option is Zampa. It's easy pickings as soon as Starc and Cummins are off.

I think they should've bought Hazlewood, so at least 1 of them can tie down an end through the innings. At the moment with just 2 strike bowlers they're trying to save them for the death but they're also the only genuine threat to get a wicket in the middle.

Another match abandoned. This is a poorly organised tournament so far. You have WC once every 4 years and yet there are no reserve days for matches.

NCn or behrendoff with new ball and Cummins in the middle is a better move I think.

Hazlwood is injured.

There's 45 group stage matches and the tournament lasts one a month as is. How are we fitting in reserve days as well?

Most days have only one match per day so I don't see the issue having a reserve day. It's not like it is any other event, it's your biggest event so ICC should have been prepared better. Not a great image for the game if matches are just going to be abandoned.

They should have included reserve days for games. The weather doesn't look good for the upcoming week either so we'll probably have more abandoned matches.

Yeah, but there's the logistics of team training and pitch preparation for the next games to consider too. I'm almost certain reserve days will have been discussed (as we have them for the semi and the finals) and the fact we don't have them probably suggests they were not feasible. There's a lot of teams moving to a lot of grounds in a pretty compressed time scale (most teams will play 2 games in 3 days at least once and most grounds are hosting 2 matches in 3 days too).

Although that said, I think the main factor may well be not wanting to play World Cup matches in empty stadiums. Ultimately, I think that's deemed to look worse for the sport (whether it actually is or not) than No results.

Playing 2 games on Sundays would help
Perhaps, but I think 1 game per day is generally better. How much interest did Afghanistan v New Zealand get when it clashed with England Bangladesh? Not a lot, and most of what it did get was because England rolled Bangladesh over.

Constantly at the STD clinic.
ICC in a nutshell. You have a massive platform for the sport, more than a billion interested viewers. Not only do you create no hype about it in the home nation, you don't even think about reserve games and what impact it could have on the outcome.

Could you imagine this happening in football -- England out to play Botswana but oh wait we have to split points. We couldn't do the game.

This was always going to happen with a tournament staged in June in England. I'm English myself and would be happy if we weren't given the rights to a major tournament again. Too great a risk that we'd get a run of weather like this.
