In the unfortunate event that David was to leave, I think that Oblak is the best possible solution we could hope for.

At the very least, he wouldn’t be that big of a step down and is another of the best keepers in the world and at most he is better than DDG in some aspects.

De Gea to PSG and Oblak coming here would be good business.

There are not too many top teams able to pay his release clause. Also, most of them already have a good goalkeeper.

Well, there’s a good chance we’ll whiff on our preferred CB and Forward big-money moves...locking down DDG’s long-term replacement would be a useful destination for some of those funds at least.

Why do people assume that Atletico would want DDG in a swap deal with Oblak. DDG ain’t worth 120 mill, no keeper in the world is. They would be way better off getting the money and discovering another gem for 10-20 mill. Not to mention the wages DDG would demand. Another bad season and DDG will be seen the way we see Bale - old, overpriced, on huge wages and regressing. Why would Atletico want that?
Oh all they have to do is buy another gem for £10mil. Why hasn't anyone else thought of that?

Boyhood fan? World class keeper? DDG leaving?

Sign him the feck up. He won't be clamming to leave to go play for another club since he's at the club he'd dreamed about playing for all his life.

I'd still prefer to keep De Gea, although if it's not an option, there's hardly any better replacements out there. It's a bit depressing how people suddenly don't rate De Gea anymore though.
It's one of the strangest things I've seen on here. Totally out of sync with my footy mates, United fans or otherwise. It was a bizarre slump in form but it's hardly like we've never seen some of our best ever players go through tragic slumps before! De Gea does seem like one of those keepers that will drop off a cliff quickly, like Casillas, but even he had one of his best ever seasons at 30! Declining at 28 for a keeper would be genuinely exceptional.

I'm with you that I'd prefer de Gea but wouldn't complain about Oblak. It would be a little annoying to move from one keeper who's not great with his feet to one who's even worse, though. Sure it's not the most important thing but it'd be another sign of us being out of sync with modern trends.

Wonder if they’d take 50m plus De Gea. Article is probably bollocks anyway though.

Not sure how one couldn't be happy. He's fecking brilliant.

Don't see the deal happening mind because atletico will ask for his release clause and no sensible club will pay it. He'll have to throw a right strop and force a move.

They have been doing that for ages. DDG came through their youth system, they bought Oblak for 16 mill Euros, Rodri for 20 mill, Griezmann for 24 mill, Godin for 7 mill, Filipe Luis for 12 mill and Jose Gimenez and Diego Costa who they bought as youngsters for less than a mill ....i can go on and on. Yes they are very good at discovering talented youngsters and promoting them, that’s how they became so successful

I think he had until he extended a contract a few months ago. Now it's €120m or so.
That's a bit much for even a world class keeper. Unless Athletico lower their demands, this is a no go.

Would you rather pay £100m for Oblak or £75m for Maguire?

Let's be honest, if De Gea is leaving, we need Oblak + a CB. It's not an either or situation. Maguire isn't my first choice as I'd rather pay 25mil extra and get Koulibaly but if that ain't happening, we will have to make do with Maguire.

no keeper is worth £120m. I'd be disgusted if we paid that for a keeper when we have Romero and possibly Henderson who can do the job in a year or two if he's good enough.

Oblak for me is one of the best keepers in the world. I hope the rumours are true and we cash in on De Gea and go for him. A new chapter is needed for De Gea. He’s been a good servant but he made far too many mistakes last season.

Oblak is without doubt the perfect replacement for De Gea, if we have to replace De Gea.

Don't think there's a single better option out there.

Didn't even realise but Oblak is actually 2 years younger than De Gea, would be amazing to have him for his best years.

We would certainly have to sell Dean Henderson, maybe insert a buy-back close so we can get him back in five years when he's entering his prime and Oblak gets on. I love Dave, but it's time to move on.

Please do so, and include the ones that haven't been successful. When you have to bring up 3 players signed 9 years ago, a player signed 6 years ago and 2 players signed 5 years ago, you might want to question the validity of such an approach. You've managed to name, what, 1 player who fits your profile signed in the last 5 years? If it was as simple as that, you would have thought they could've done better than signing Lemar for £60mil, Morata on loan, Diego Costa for £60mil and Vitolo for £32mil, Gamiero for £30mil, Gaitan for £22mil, Vrsaljko for £20mil, Jackson Martinez for £32mil, £15mil for resigning an old Luiz etc (all of whom had signed in the last 4 years), when all they had to do was just sign some young superstar for a tenner and a packet of biscuits. They must've just forgot!

Could do a straight swap? I'm guessing De Gea more than anything wants to go back to Madrid and Oblak dreamt of OT as a kid! Win win

I usually fall for all the transfer rumours to United, yes i know, i am naive, but this one doesn't look right.
Looks a bit desperate, doesn't it? Not seen anything about us wanting him, only him saying he wants to go to United....
Just looks so weird...

I love these kind of posts and completely agree with you. It must be so hard for the third biggest club in Spain to sign these players and not win anything.

It’s like the Dortmund love-in.

Many of their recent signings have been flops but I don't think you can ignore the fact that they built a league winning team for very little money and when they started spending extravagantly on big money signings, their signings started to flop. But that's not what I wanted to say through that example. Even those flops you mentioned, most of them are young players with lot of potential - Lemar, Vitolo. They also signed Rodri and Correa in the last few years. Although they signed Costa back for a huge amount (I'm sure they regret that now), I don't expect them to be interested in DDG

Good as a keeper he is, can’t see him being Ole Gunnar Farage’s first choice. Butland more likely.

Any keeper we sign has to be a good shot stopper by default.

But the question is, how does Oblak's distribution and command of the area fare in the games regular observers have watched him in?

First time hearing that he is a proclaimed United fan... Also his attitude is a problem, at least for the national team. Mr. primadonna was injured for NT, while playing for Atletico. All due to not being named capitan and disliking the NT coach.

A decent upgrade based on how Dave was last season
Oblak would be great, but this disrespect towards our best player for the last 6 years has got to stop. 3 month poor form. 6 years excellent service. Imagine the last 6 seasons with anyone else in goal...I think that's about 10 points less a season.

We do not need to sign Maguire. If we are going to buy a defender from the EPL then Ake and Diop would be better alternatives, especially with a high pressing backline.

If DDG leaves then I assume we will have more or less agreed on a deal for Oblak.

I'd take Oblak in a heartbeat. DDG seems to be dithering on his contract renewal. We need to be more ruthless. He's been a fantastic servant to this club but if he's still not sure about committing to us and Oblak is available, I'm more than happy with that replacement.

Wouldnt he want Sanchez type wages though and a big transfer fee. Be cheaper to give De Gea the wages and keep the transfer fee.

I think it would be bad business if we ended up selling David for less than what we would pay for Oblak. David was recognized as the best keeper only slightly over a year ago. He can get back to that level IF he wants to stay here.

I think it's pretty clear DDG doesn't want to stay here. This feels exactly the same as last time but this time there won't be a fecking fax machine to save us
