In the mid's 2000 he was genuinely one of the most exciting players in the world with his fantastic freekick technique and dribbling/playmaking skills. The height of his career came at Celtic.

Some could look at his time in La Liga and think he wasn't that good but if you have seen him play, just how good was he ?

Freekicks and shooting apart not that great though he was a good player for Celtic.

One of the best free kick takers in the world at some point. Didn't he score one against United in the Champion League?

Seems like people don't think much about his all-around game. IMO he's the best japanese player.

On a serious note. All I remember is that unreal free kick he scored against United. Hated him for a while after that.

Better than Nakata? I think Honda was better too but discovered too late.

Never watched him play but his left foot looks really good in that video. Pretty awesome freekicks.

Very good player and superb free-kick taker. Arguing he was the most exciting around is a bit too much but undoubtedly very good.

Nakata was way better. He even played a major part in Roma wining the scudetto back in 2001
Yeah I know he's very good but at least for me Nakamura was more aesthetically pleasing.

It makes me think about the state of Japanese football and why it's so difficult for a player there to be as good as those two

Class kicking skills, look so effortless when he pulled it off.

He's definitely a reliable player when the team need him.

That's about it, just a fine player without it, good professional too.

Japan is producing a lot of talented players. And they already showed that on the last WC. No doubt in the next few years we will see more talented Japanese players in Europe, but even a few of them we don’t see here will show quality at the next WC.

If they will be more popular than these is another story.

Not even better than Honda or Yoshida IMO.
Nakamura was only good MAINLY for his free kicks and he had a good shot on him. He was your average player besides that. Honda for sure is a much better player.

Honda was nothing special as an overall player either, though not sure if he was better than Nakamura who i didn't see play nearly as often. Honda was a slow plodder that liked his time on the ball and not very press resistant, but with very good shooting technique, some good close control and a good passer if given space.

Watched him week in week out at cska during his peak who he was good for, but not often in the bigger league or euro games and wasn't surprised when he flopped at Milan as he didn't have the speed of thought or press resistance on the ball to make up for the slowness, though tbf i believe he had some sort of long-term illness by that stage that affected his athleticism even more?. Anyway, he was a good luxury attacking player that could make a nice highlight reel of goals, but not one of the better midfielders i've seen in RPL. For foreign midfielders at that time, Danny was a lot more effective.

Japan for a long time seem to have had some good technically proficient passers in midfield...i remember Ono at Feyenoord being skillful but had a lot of injuries, Nakata, Nakamura, Honda, or Endo who never left J-league. Kagawa was the best though, his Dortmund peak was higher than anything the others reached, though i don't know if more informed Japanese fans would consider him the most talented. They never seem to have any even serviceable forwards though, with a good finisher i think they would have had a good chance of scraping past Belgium at the WC.

'In the mid's 2000 he was genuinely one of the most exciting players in Scotland'

Scored some screamers, especially the two freekicks against us and that curling half volley in the Old Firm derby and he was outstanding in the SPL. But after all he did play for the best side there and it's only the SPL. He was pretty average in Italy and Spain. Kagawa was great at his peak but again, played in a fantastic Dortmund side/system that suited him.

Nakata on the other hand was inspirational, I feel his peak was at Perugia and he practically kept them up in their first season in Serie A in 1998. before winning the Scudetto with Roma where he was in Totti's shadow.

Average player who took amazing free kicks. Overall as a player Nakata was leagues above.

Good at dead balls but Nakata, Honda and Kagawa are/were all better footballers.

Troussier definitely screwed up by leaving him out in 2002 though.

Next up, Scott brown was the bestest midfielder ever. He was genuinely one of the best tacklers and passers in the universe and his peak came at Celtic.

How have we almost got to 2 pages in this thread without the 'doughball' video being posted?

Video says it all really.
