............................................. TEAM BEAM .......................................................................................... TEAM SKIZZO ..........................................

TEAM BEAM

Formation: 4-2-2-2 - Carre Magique or France's Magic Square that set the World alight

Playing style: Attacking, characterized by team's invention, industry, creativity and cohesion

The world had it's share of brilliant attacking triumvirates that terrorized defenses in football history. One of the best known and most loved by most in The Holy Trinity of United. This team is based on France Carre Magique or Magic Square in Fernandez, Tigana, Giresse and Platini in what was one of the most appreciated team of the 80's.

This team will take the main principles and what was almost a casual arrogance of that team with added flavour in attack of two fantastic pieces which are Blokhin and Rummennige.

But, before we go to attack, just to answer the question of why even change or add another piece of what was already one of the best midfield unit ever known on international level. Because Iniesta is carbon copy of Giresse which keeps everything Giresse could add and a little more. And because putting all four together would be a bit boring quite frankly.

Attacking phase: the main idea is to put two players with enormous pace which will benefit Platini through balls and at the same time love to drift wide allowing space in the middle for Platini to come in.

Meaning: give Platini the best possible platform to use his play making skills and allowing him to attack the space in the middle using his goalscoring abilities to the maximum.

Defensive phase: The defence is bullet proof through the middle (no point in talking about Scirea or Mcgrath defensive abilities). So with the natural ability to dominate the game with this kind of players we will close the middle of the park while in defensive phase trying to isolate Henry and shut down Laudrup. Laudrup is the only attacking player which suits Henry to the teeth by his natural tendency to release the ball quickly and feed Henry's runs. So, we are more than happy to let Ronaldinho and Best attack our flanks or play individually all game long.

Conclusion: better midfield and greater in numbers with the attack that suits our GOAT Platini to the teeth, overall a much better defensive shield in Scirea and Mcgrath.

TEAM SKIZZO

Formation - 4231/433

More discussions will be had in game, but quick points to note.

  • Schmeichel will look to spring us forward with quick throws to the wings.
  • Koeman passing from deep.
  • Shesternyov and Gentile covering for Koeman.
  • solid midfield base with Makelele and Robson.
  • Front 4 with free reign to play as they see fit. You don't try and limit that Joga Bonito

I wouldn’t say Laudrup is the only one with the vision to release Henry.

Not to mention quick releases from Schmeichel and Koeman, and Robson isn’t too shabby either. We’ll be more likely to strike quickly than try and knock it around to find an opening.

And I also wouldn’t suggest letting Ronaldinho and Best attack your fullbacks one one one all game and hope for the best.

Anyway, about to start shift so I’ll check in when I can. Good luck @Jim Beam

My vote had been decided by the fact that I just happened to rewatch France's 1984 campaign over the past few weeks! The thought of Kalle and Blokhin in front of the carre magique

Even though Skizzo's front 4 + Robbo can win a game against any side with their genius.

Thinking of that makes me think there should have been Giresse instead of Iniesta there, to nail it down completely.

Best of luck to you too @Skizzo. Have a lot of stuff on my mind today, so will jump when I can.

Didn't said vision. I said he is the only one there with natural tendency to release the ball quickly and feed Henry's runs. Meaning it will be his first thought as soon he gets the ball. For all their brilliance it won't be one of Ronaldinho and Best first thoughts. By shutting down the middle and that route I think I will do a pretty good job of shutting down Henry. It is obvious that by far the most dangerous version of Henry was at Arsenal based on their quick passing and releasing him as quickly as they could.

And I also wouldn’t suggest letting Ronaldinho and Best attack your fullbacks one one one all game and hope for the best.
I was implying am ready to let them play individualistically, trying to go break my team on their own (often going 1 vs 2 as there will be a world class CB watching on either side). Both fantastic players, but I will take that chance with any opposition player if that means the other pieces of the team won't work to it's full potential.

Despite being huge admirer of Giresse, wanted to add another and "different" cog to that quartet. Think that Iniesta is a perfect replacement and that he even adds to the whole team, especially when you count that you have Blokhin and Kalle upfront.

Time to explain the vote.

One of those games which you know is a draw but vote anyways for the quality drafting of one side. I haven't seen a better Carri Magique built here.

Have to say there are so many areas with upper hand for Skizzo.

The flanks on counters, Koeman's long balls to catch the fullbacks out of position on the break, Laudrup vs Fernandez, Makelele vs Platini and of course Gentile and Shesterenyov being great covers against a 2 striker setup with Koeman well covered too. To be honest, I think out of 11 times, Skizzo wins this 6 times. But as I had PMed Jim long before the games started, it was my favorite team in the draft and my vote was almost pre decided no matter whom he faced.

@Skizzo's attack is sizzling and Robson will definitely be a factor through the middle...

But I've voted @Jim Beam because of the rock-solid central defensive core headlined by Scirea and and the delightful Carré Magique theme with a mostly '80s cast — which provides the perfect platform for the best player on the pitch (as well as the dynamic forwards up front who should be as complementary with Platini as Boniek at Juventus in terms of making runs behind the opposition defensive line and relieving the pressure in transitions).

Quite like the selection of Iniesta, too — has similar characteristics as Giresse in terms of passing/playmaking/dribbling nous, and even though he wasn't a team-mate of Platini's and doesn't offer proven chemistry, I'd trust him to form a positive partnership with just about any GOAT because of his tactical foresight and unselfishness — in fact, I'd rate him as pretty much the definitive facilitator and auxiliary playmaker in drafts (which are underrated and underappreciated traits in All-Star teams).

Though going forward, Fernández should be replaced to tighten up the back of the square/rhombus...a good enforcer-style “water-carrier”, but won't quite cut it against the best of the best as a marker or defensive screen.
