Regarding the signing bonuses, how does that work under the NHL salary cap?

Is it similar to the NFL hard cap rule?
A bit late, but here's what I found:

"Signing bonuses are part of the cap hit for any NHL player, but performance bonuses only count when they're earned. ... Signing bonuses are always paid, so the team cuts a cheque even if a contract slides, but performance bonuses slide along with the rest of the deal."

I should add that I don't know anything about the NFL cap rules, so I don't know if I'm even answering your question.

Basically, those really high signing bonuses are guaranteed even in the event of a lockout. Which is why a lot of contracts are now weighted towards signing bonuses instead of actual salary. Or there will just be 1 year in the contract that the salary and signing bonus flip over when the CBA is coming up. We all know the NHL love themselves a lockout.

The Habs are now linked to an other RFA, Patrick Laine. Bergevin is taking the piss.

They have a good chance of getting Laine if they pay him 10 mill +. I don't think Jets will match that as they have to pay Kyle Connor a big contract as well.

Well watching the wings this year is gonna be another challenge

Looking at our roster I see the following:

Bertuzzi - Larkin - Mantha
Hirose - Flipper - Athanasiou
Rasmussen - Glendenning - Helm
Abdelkader - Nielsen - De La Rose

DeKeyser - Green
Nemeth - Hronek
Cholowski - Bowey

Howard
Bernier

Ericsson and Daley being healthy scratches.

Green will get moved near the deadline and I imagine Moritz Seider will get brought up to replace him and see out the year. Daley will probably also manage to get traded for defensive depth. We should get an early rounder for Green and a late pick for Daley
I can see Abdelkader being a buyout candidate for next year, we make some good savings and it should fall right around our timeline for handing out bigger contracts that he starts coming off of the books entirely.

Happy to give Svechnikov, Veleno, Zadina, Kuffner et al all the time this year in Grand Rapids. Veleno and Zadina will be ready next year and Svech could do with a year to play himself back up to the level he was approaching before his knee injury last year. At that point if we have bought out Abdelkader and managed to shift a contract like Helm whilst retaining salary (Ken Holland will definitely fall for it to get McDavid some wing help) then next season we could be looking at:

Bertuzzi - Larkin - Mantha
Hirose - Veleno - Athanasiou
Zadina - Rasmussen - Svechnikov
Kuffner - Nielsen - Glendenning

DeKeyser - Hronek
Cholowski - Seider
???? - Bowey

Bernier
Larsson

I can see Stevie Y making a trade to maybe acquire a legit Top 2 defenseman. Maybe dangle Athanasiou's RFA/Arbitration eligibility out there. I am quite surprised we didn't make a move like that for Trouba, given Winnpeg's cap situation I think a guy like AA would have benefitted them immensely. Of all the teams to trade with, Winnipeg could be the most interesting for us, we could move Green across to them which gives them something back on their D that they have lost they also have home town Michigan boy Connor who needs paying, lets them pay Laine instead, or indeed we go after Laine with maybe a 1st rounder, Green (half salary retained), AA and another throw in.

Could be a big year for Detroit, I know Yzerman has preached patience but this could be a really opportune time for him to strike, we do have a lot of interesting assets for the first time in ages.

Toronto freaking out about Auston Matthews dropping his pants and mooning a security guard with his underwear still on

Pretty sure there's a great anecdote out there about Wayne Gretzky ending up naked in the back of a taxicab when he was in the WHL around 1978.

I did read something on Twitter about that, but couldn't be bothered finding out what it was all about since it apparently happened in July.

I think they should be more worried about their blue line than a nothing story.

They were last night

Leafs
Sorry, season doesn't start until the Habs play.

Seriously, I don't know this has slipped my mind. I have been so singularly focused on Montreal's season opener.

I was just checking their starting line up and they look soooooooooo mediocre. I think you are in for a rough season!

I think the team is alright, they won't set the world alight, but the team is okay. They did pretty well last night.

They needed to make a splash in free agency/off season. I know it was a long shot, bordering on an impossibility, but Sebastian Aho on this Montreal team would make it a very good playoff team.

I went to bed with the score 4-1 to the Leafs early in the 3rd period. Woke up to a 6-5 win.

They've come back from multiple goal deficits to take the game to a shootout in both games this season.

With the D my Jets have currently I'm banking on them not having a single shutout this season. It'll be a long season.

If I'm being totally honest, I'm surprised it has taken this long for grandpa Don to be given his P45.

Not a fan of his but we live in a world where we are offended by everything - sad way for him to go out.

I don't think you can say what he's been saying all these years and expect to survive. The most surprising thing about Don Cherry is the fact that he last so long in a prime time slot. He's essentially an 85 year old man with 85 year old man views.

The last comments were an excuse to get rid of him, he has said worse things than that. How many times has he condoned or even recommended violence?

He's 100% said worse things, but you can never predict the incident that ends up causing the most uproar on social media, which let's face it, is the only reason SportsNet have decided to let him go.

Agreed, I was adding to your sentiment. He should have been dismissed a long time ago and if it wasn't for his trademarked suits it would have happened without even the need of any uproar.

Yeah, I stopped watching Coach's Corner when I realised he was neither funny or interesting, and the hockey insight he offered, although vast in knowledge, was meh at best.

Any news on what will be replacing Coach‘s corner?

Rather than replacing Don they should scrap the whole segment and replace it with something new.

Cherry is a dinosaur but his dismissal marks the triumph of victim culture and virtue signalling.

I need not remind you all that Canada is a nation of immigrants and his comments are applicable to people of many different hues.

Apparently they gave him the chance to apologise before sacking him so he went knowing he had a choice.

Now Babcock has been fired, we'll see the Leafs implode and what should have been a team that challenged fall apart and people running out of Toronto quicker than McDavid can skate

I don’t understand how you think the falling apart will start now? It started with Babcock hence the sacking.

The implosion started with Babcock staying - He should’ve gone before the season started.

His style does not match the style of GM or the players at his disposal.

This team is far too talented to be underperforming this poorly. No excuses for them now either.

First Spurs, now the Leafs. Wild couple of days.

All we need now is for Michel Therrien to be appointed the new Leafs coach to complete my week.
