Would you call Atletico Madrid a "European Powerhouse"?

More of a European Shithouse but I'd still pick to play for them over United. Living in Madrid and playing in La Liga is a dream move.

More of a Spanish Spurs
Atletico won the league 5 years ago. Spurs last won the league cup 11 years ago and last won the league 58 years ago, they're a nothing club.

I'd say they were a powerhouse between 2013 and 2017, but they need a big rebuild now.

Got a very talented squad. Juanfran and Godin have been moved on, stalwarts of their defence for the last decade or so. I expect Luis to feature less with the new LB who's highly rated taking his minutes. It's a chance for new/existing player to stake a claim in their squad. Their midfield is always solid and full of good players.

Trippier is a strange signing but I expect Simeone sees something in him that he can utilise to good affect.

They absolutely need to get the reset right in terms of personnel and tactics in order to avoid entering decline. I'm very interested in seeing if Simeone can rejig things well. The defensive organization will provide them with a solid base; can Simeone make them more proactive is what I want to know.

I would compare them to Spurs? In their best moment currently.

Athletico will be 3/4 in La liga, pushing in quarter finals CL but they are not going to go for a bidding war with the power houses.

Saying that Utd are no longer a powerhouse either

They've actually won trophies (both domestic and European), and have been to 2 CL finals. For those who can comprehend that there are more to accomplishments than trophies won at the end of the season, Atletico are certainly a powerhouse.

And one can compliment Atletico without taking shots at Spurs (who are a well run team and have done well considering the circumstances)

They are nothing like Spurs!

Hard to know how to define them though. They have spent a lot of money over the years, and have done pretty well, won a league a few years ago, won the Europa league too. I guess I would say they are a powerhouse, as at least they have got to CL finals too in recent years. As of this moment, they ar probaly only behind Barca, Real Madrid, Juventus, Bayern and Liverpool. I'd definately have them way above Man City in the list though, they are merely an English Abu Dhabi funded powerhouse, and as yet are insignificant in Europe.

I find it a bit strange how Simeone's star seems to have faded though amongst other teams fanbases. I know he isn't known to coach the most exciting football in many peoples eyes, but he's one heck of a coach. But all summer, I kept seeing these lists on twitter of 'best coaches', and of course Guardiola and Klopp dominated the top 2 of ever list, but then the likes pf Pochetinno where there is all the top 5's of these lists, with Simeone nowhere to be seen.

Any club able to spend 120m on a teenager is a powerhouse IMO.

They're the 3rd biggest spanish club right now, arguably top 10 in the world in terms of European performances.

It's one of the few teams you definitely don't want to get drawn against in the CL. Powerhouse.

Nah.

They're a strong contender in European competition, but not a powerhouse. They went out in the first knockout round this year and in the groups the year before, that's not powerhouse material at all.

Mmm..if we actually check the last 10 years of Europa League and CL, they are more of an European Powerhouse than us, for sure

They're comparable to Arsenal in terms of domestic trophies, though they've got three CL 2nd place finishes, two of them being pretty recent, and more ELs than Arsenal I think.

The difference is that their recent form (last couple of years) has been tiers above Arsenal, its its like trying to define Arsenal's tier in in mid 2000s, I think it was fair to call them a powerhouse at the time.

Hard to see them as a European powerhouse as they’ve won one league title in the last 20 something years, that’s not a slight on them, but it is what it is.

They did really well in Europe, but still, not enough to call them a European powerhouse, even though on paper their achievements look great, but the EL isn’t really a “powerhouse” trophy.

They were for most of the '50s, '60s and '70s and of course since the Aguirre-Simeone years.

But they struggled badly for most of the '80s, '90s and '00s. Their 96-97 UCL campaing was a disappoinment after total domination in Spain during 95-96 (way more dominant than 13-14). And of course relegation in 2000-2002.

Said it all along when people were claiming we were amazing because we got to three finals in four years that we weren't because we didn't win two of them so they were both for nothing. Getting to a final is a great achievement but only winning it makes you a great side.

Atletico making it to the final and losing twice just makes them losers at CL level.

Winning the Europa three times in 9 years isn't even as impressive as Sevilla is it? Sevilla aren't a European powerhouse.
Define powerhouse (Top10, Top15?) because I consider Sevilla one of the Top30 european clubs.

Are Dortmund one? Not too dissimilar in quite a number of respects. Both in leagues with huge teams means it's difficult to win a lot of stuff, Atletico have it a bit harder mind you with 2 behemoths in there.

Atletico - 10 domestic titles - 1 in 20 years. 3 X EC/CL runner's up, twice in the last decade

Dortmund - 8 domestic titles - 2 in the last 17 years. 1 x CL winner in the 90s, 1 x runner up in the last decade

They're obviously both pretty big clubs.

Surely Man. City is more atp?

Horrible run in 90s which resulted in relegations then they got back up in 2000s and established themselves in La Liga without ever really challenging, just like Man. City. In the shadow of one of Europe'e elite etc.

Ultimately difference is they didn't need takeover by a state to get massively competitive again, just a brilliant managerial appointment and very good selections when they had to sell all those key strikers in last decade.

Their style of play will be interesting. Tactics are cyclical and their tactics under Simeone have definitely become outdated. Struggled past couple seasons in Europe compared to how successful and hard to beat they were around 2014 etc. Think he's accepted they need to change their style of play to have any chance of success.

They weren’t before 2010 but since 2010 until now what they have done is incredible they turned into a a competitor both in La liga and Europe. Multiple Europa league titles, 2 CL finals, other further runs in Europe, European super cups , Spanish super cups and even a Unlikely La liga title. They build the right way and have a foundation to continue to grow. Simeone will go down as a Legend for them maybe even there version of SAF ( I don’t think he will be there nearly as long but you get the idea)

The club rank system I run has Atletico Madrid at 6th best in Europe. The rank is calculated on a number of variables, league form, european form of the last 3 years. They've also never been outside of the Top 10 since I started doing monthly updates which started back in August 2016. They have however been very slowly declining.

So to answer the question i'd say in the last 6 years they've clearly been a Top 10 team yes.

They have been excellent the last few years and not with huge net spends either. Replacing big striker departure afer another all the way back to AGuero, CL finals, league title, Europa cups. They seem to be competing for every trophy they are in for. NOt a team you want to draw.

This will be an interesting season though, not because they have lost more big players like Rodri and Griezmann but because they have lost a few mainstays that have been there a long time now like Godin and Juanfran which to my memory hasnt really happened before.

Loathed him as a player even without the Beckham situation but no doubting he has done a phenomenal job managing the club and they seem to have a great scouting network too.

Dont think you can compare them to SPurs as they have done far far more, but although different styles of football I do think you can compare the managers and the effect they have had on each club

Current Atlético is undoubtedly bigger than Spurs, Arsenal, any german/italian/french team other than Bayern, Juve and PSG.

Only Barça, Madrid, PSG, Juve, Bayern, Man City, Man Utd (money), Chelsea (money) and current Liverpool (with Klopp) are bigger than them.

Sold Partey, signed Suarez. Looks like 2 steps back to me.

Their season now depends on Felix finally showing his talent.

No. Big, big club with a proud history and a great fanbase. Top manager has had them as one of the top 10 teams in Europe for nearly a decade now.

But when I hear the word powerhouse, I get images of Bayern or Real Madrid. You have to be winning silverware and be considered a final destination club for top players.

Never really found Partey convincing for Atletico, they didn't look the same since Tiago and Gabi left.

How different could it be but for that 93rd minute equaliser in 2014 champions league final from Segio Ramos.
