Losing to Comeback Winning!
So according to OP, Matic is the best choice with what he had.

:D Kidding.

= Mctominay.

There are plenty more arts in defending, not just tackling, interceptions, not letting players dribble through and fouls related.
Listing just the sort of 4 ways there is too limited.

Few others ways eg. pressing well so much so the opposite player had to pass back or away, good coverings when your teammates made mistakes defensively, good heavy markings to unsettle players, hold your ground well which prompt the players to not even try dribbling, etc are the other things which McT did better. He also didn't make pointless fouls, just the necessary fouls. Aerially he's also good, not letting successive long balls.

And I think we should give credits to Pogba's real abilities. The popular notion is he's bad at defending. I completely disagree with that.

It depends on what you mean by defending. I don't think Pogba is as bad at tracking back as people say, and he can certainly put in a tackle. My problem with him defensively is his positioning. He seems to frequently get caught to high up the pitch and leave his partner exposed, which is why most people would rather see him in a midfield 3 rather than a 2.

Considering that, his best partner with the players we have probably is McTominnay; more mobile than Matic, more positionally aware than Fred. Not ideal, but unless we sign a holding midfielder it's probably the best option we have.

Gueye for 28m would be a good improvement.

12 months ago when we were linked with him, loads of posters on here were really unhappy that we were wanting to sign a guy that is going to be 30 soon.

Now that he’s about to sign for PSG for a bargain price in today’s market, all of a sudden he’s someone many now want because of the price?

Nobody. Pogba should be further forward, with a box-to-box midfielder and a deep-lying playmaker in the engineroom.

Not in a 4-2-3-1 he shouldn’t.
I disagree. He's too inconsistent, too lacking in intensity and too weak defensively to provide adequate protection for the back four in counterattacking side like ours.

I'd rather that task was handed to two other players (whether in a 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 or a diamond), leaving Pogba free to link midfield and attack and create/finish chances.

Maybe a 442 (diamond) could the best formation with our current players.

De Gea
Wan Bissaka - Lindelof - Maguire? - Shaw
CDM
McTominay/Fred - Pogba
CAM
SS - Rashford

CAM: Fernandes or Eriksen (Chong as a cover)
SS: Pepe or Dybala (Greenwood as a cover)

Who could be the best CDM we can get?

My wit's end
Pogba shouldn't play that deep. He's got awful tracking ability. It's a recipe for disaster.

Pogba should only ever play in the hole in a 4-2-3-1.

McTominay.

Pogba is the only player in our squad who could even try to play the Scholes role.

All depends on Pogbas mentality. He played in a two with Kante in the World Cup and was super disciplined compared to how he's played for Juve and Man Utd.

To say he's incapable is wrong. He can do whatever he wants. He's just never wanted to be a disciplined yet creative midfielder. Scholes, Kroos or Iniesta haven't got more skills than Pogba but considerably more focus to do what's best for the team, and not themselves or showboating.

I'd love to see just one season of Pogba playing how SAF would've had him playing. Aslong as Raiola's around that can't happen though.

If we continue playing 4231... Who would you sign as CAM/No.10?
