Assuming a £250k p/w wage and a £25m fee, Alderweireld on a 3-year deal would work out at £21,3m per year. Maguire, assuming a £200k p/w wage and a fee of £80m would work out at £26,6m per year. That's how clubs calculate transfers, as fees are amortised over the length of the initial contract.
That’s actually not how decisions are made. You are forgetting about resale value - with Toby it will be virtually zero, with Maguire, if he performs it may still be high (simply due to him being 4 years younger).

I am amazed nobody has gone in for Alderweireld, particularly United.

I didn't realise Vertonghen was out of contract next summer also. It would be a massive blow for Spurs to lose three first team players on a free transfer next summer.
Personally I think Vertonghen will sign a new deal when offered one. I think Eriksen will re-sign as well if this Real Madrid transfer never takes off and Alderweireld is the one that will be leaving on a free imo.

The appetite to sign him seems to have massively reduced in a year.
And thankfully so.

Him and lindelof wouldn't be great and wed barely have anyone who can head it in the whole team.

Then there would be the suspicion we haven't learnt a thing from dishing huge contracts out to players of his age range after Sanchez and Rooney.

Second paragraph, chief. First one is purely on how costs are calculated.

I find it very hard to believe that he's available to PL clubs for £25m. This is Levy we're talking about.

I'm amazed nobody has moved for him
I'd imagine that several clubs have inquired, but none that he wants to go .... which means (in part) no club offering the wages and contract length that he wants.

I disagree slightly... I expect there are clubs that have enquired who he would want to go to - if they offered the right money!

Clear as day that there will have been some conversations with his agent, but the money he’s asking is no doubt seriously out of kilter with what clubs will pay.

He’s playing a dangerous game, this time next year he will be 31, and may struggle to get the same payday next year as this, even without a transfer fee. If he’s not staying at spurs in the long run, is he going to get phased out this season?

Who is his agent? Wouldn’t be surprised if they have been holding out for a massive agent fee that’s put off clubs.

I think there's plenty of clubs he'd rather go to, just a case of whether or not those clubs are willing to pay what he wants.

His dad I think, I think he must have an agreement in place with some club to go to on a free, its the only reason I can think as to why its dead in the media.

The contract clause has expired. Sneaky bid of £40m Ed?

Maybe his wage demands were too big but I'm very surprised he hasn't gone somewhere else.

Free transfer next summer which means he can talk to European clubs from January and sign a pre contract. Probably ajax in my opinion.

I would have had him in a heartbeat at UTD for added depth. Oh well.

No top club is remotely interested. That’s why people who think he’d pocket a monster signing on fee, if he goes on a free next year, are mental.

I said this a week or so ago, he must have a *precontract* done somewhere. He has said he would love to go back to Ajax a few times I think that’s it, probably a coaching role after.

Come on mate, £25m fecking Tyrone Mings went for the same, clubs will have been interested but Toby had his future decided I think.

This is true by all accounts. I can't find the link now but there was a story back in May which effectively said that Toby and his agent had made it clear he wants to be a free agent and was not interested in negotiating with clubs this summer. It is a gamble but I assume the only way to change his mind would be to let him know that you would be willing to pay him like a free agent now which no sane club is going to do.

I think a club probably has already done so, otherwise why would he be willing to wait? He said about a year ago “I will honour my contract” which mean il be a free agent, no way would he risk that if something wasn’t in place.
