He could’ve never played for Manchester United or a club with similar ambitions , he was basically the definition of a luxury player.
Don’t get me wrong, he was a brilliant footballer, but you can’t have a player like that in a top side, who isn’t capable of putting the work on the pitch without the ball as well as with it.
Of course he could have played for us. What was Cantona if he wasn’t a luxury player ? And to say you can’t have a player like that in a top side is bonkers.

Fergie brought in Cantona, rumoured to have been close to getting Gascoigne and Di Canio along with a few other temperamental foreigners over the years. Le Tissier would have slotted in perfectly but for whatever reason it never happened.

I'm no expert, having only watched a handful of full games, maybe 15 or so, quite a few would be from near the end of his career too, but his workrate didn't seem that bad to me. From what i had read of him beforehand i was expecting a mummy on the pitch, a lower league plodding stroller sort of workrate, yet found him to be quite mobile and active. No workhorse and not fast, but i was still surprised. Workrate and pace wise it was no worse than watching Bergkamp for instance.

I wonder if it's been one of those criticisms of a player that while valid to some extent(especially considering english football culture of the time and high number of workhorse players produced) ended up snowballing and getting overdone. A bit like the Andy Cole needs 5 chances comment from Hoddle.
In a poor side it will be focussed on more cause the team spends most of its time clueless and chasing shadows. While it is true that Bergkamp was no more active but Arsenal used to have more of the ball and better structured play.

This led to periods of the game where Le Tiss would completely dissapear from a game. Asked to do the impossible whenever he had it and he gave his best effort in regards to generating genuine match winning moments in a side undeserving of his talents.

You cant place Gascoigne with those guys but i agree with your overall sentiment.

He was so frustrating, you'd see him literally plodding round the pitch looking knackered and then all of a sudden he would score an absolute Worldy.

Had a pretty faultless penalty record as well iirc.

There was a joke about Le Tissier at the time, that if he was a stand up comedian, he'd stay nothing until he told one really great joke that everyone went home happy with.

EDIT: Ha I posted the same thing 2 years ago!

'tis a silly place
I’m sure Le Tissier finished joint top goal scorer in the PL in that season when Ole arrived and scored 18. This was in a Southampton team who finished I think 17th. He may have been inconsistent but when you are one of the only attacking threats on your team it’s natural you’ll be ganged up on by defences.

He was a great player for Southampton., always seemed to have a good game when ever I saw him play. Did not want to move to another club which I think hurt his reputation. You either thought he was loyal to Southampton or he was content to be a big fish in a small pond much like Alan Shearer.

In 93-94 he was third top scorer with 25 goals when Southampton finished 1 point above relegation. Season after he got 30 in all comps for them.

No chance. Le Tissier had more natural ability than Cantona. Cantona happened to fit one club perfectly and embraced the stage he was given and because that club was one of the biggest it can look like he was more talented than Le Tissier

I think the fact that Cantona worked hard was the key difference. He was supposed to be one of the best trainers and stayed behind to practice more than the other players.
