I thought Sampdoria peaked in 1990-92 and went downhill aftwerwards. Midtable team by the late '90s, might be wrong.
Sampdoria and Udinese were quality! The gap wasn't much.

Because Inter were a bigger club than Barca in those days and Italian league was the premium league in world club football. Ronaldo was a bit of a journeyman anyway, like a lot of Brazilians. How many clubs did he play for in the end? PSV, Barca, Inter, Real, Milan and I am sure a couple in Brazil too before and after his European career.
Samp were relegated in '99. Udinese were great though, kept unearthing attacking gems like bierhoff, amoroso and sosa. Also very entertaining

Surely it's in the player's interest to have a release clause that isn't out of reach, to allow an easier move if they want it? I imagine it's negotiated in by their agent.

Yes they were midtable in mid 90s and then relegated. But I think they were still very entertaining and had quality players like Chiesa, Karembau, Veron, Mihajlovic, Mancini, Montella, signed Seedorf after winning CL with Ajax.
All of those players peaked in other clubs.
They had no choice. Inter were from the top league on the planet with deeper pockets.
I can see many folks don't read all posts: Ronaldo left because Núñez didn't want to renegotiate the contract (bigger wage) and Inter paid the buy out clause (which was small enough for a club of their size). But had Ronaldo got a new contract, he would have stayed at least until the injury in 99-00.
Inter made 3 superb signs in history with Barcelona:
1) Luis Suarez Miramontes (the first and only spanish Golden ball) - becoming of course a key player of La Grande Inter for almost 10 years in the '60s. Legend.
2) Ronaldo - no need to say anything else.
3) Samuel Eto'o (with the selling of Zlatan to Barca + cash for Inter) - legend of the Inter treble.

You clearly assumed that argument was convincing to all....
. I insist, Ronaldo would have ended up in the Serie A regardless of what Barca did. For Serie A clubs had the clout, the pull and the money. Even if Da Lima had renewed, one of their top guns would have convinced him, via his agents, to jump ship to star in the top league on the planet.
And that buy out clause was far from cheap those days.

I think that in the case of Maradona and Romario it was also the case of the people in charge of Barcelona having enough of those two.
Unlikely unfortunately (I would welcome him back at Inter).
