No new signings plus Pogba and Lukaku leave — what would be our ceiling?

I find it amusing so many fans can truly believe playing Martial Rashford Greenwood and James can bring us into top 4. This is EPL, not some Eredivisie.

We were 5pts from top 4 last season and Chelsea lost Hazard, and Arsenal hasn’t done much so far in the transfer window. DDG had some terrible mistakes that cost us 6pts. We’ve brought in AWB and potentially resolved a major hole in defence.

I suppose you could take the negative position that we’ll be 8th, and that is a possibility. From an intellectual standpoint, refusing to entertain the possibility of finishing in the top four seems short sighted. If Leicester can win the title, I would say we have a chance of making the top 4 if things break right.

If we didn’t sign another player this summer, Pogba and Lukaku leave and Ole remains in charge, what would be our absolute ceiling in terms of PL and cups?

Tuanzebe steps up to PL quality CB.
Greenwood gets 25 appearances and scores 10 goals.
Fred, Andreas and McTominay step up to the next level and cut down mistakes.
Rashford finally fulfills his massive potential and bags 25+ goals
Daniel James is a good signing, gets 35 appearances

I’m going to say 4th in the PL, assuming a bit better performance by the defence.
League Cup winner
FA Cup quarters
Europa League quarters
If Lukaku leaves? No change.
If Pogba leaves then we are f*cked. We will end up somewhere between 6th and 10th in the EPL.
EL: Out as soon as we meet a decent team.
LC: Out as soon as we meet a decent team.
FAC:Out as soon as we meet a decent team.

We’ve played some of our best football without them. It wouldn’t be great but it wouldn’t be as bad as some think.

It would appear that MR. Woodward has rejected the latest offer for this player. Unless there is a reappraisal of the players value we may end up with a player who has not been involved in pre season training / games for what ever reason i.e injury etc., and we will end up with a player who has through is own comments and the comments of his agent no longer wishes to play for the club he is contracted to.
In these circumstances would it not be better to let the player go, even at a lose to the club, because I do not want a player who can disperse discord within the changing room and on the training ground.

Reports say Pogba's not unhappy at United per se, he just feels he should be at a club challenging for trophies, going off the same reports if we were challenging for the PL/CL he'd be happy to stay.

This is a real possibility now. It seems that the Maguire talks have stalled, that the Bruno reporting has been wholly originating in Portugal, with the English media unable to confirm our interest.

I’m more worried about the lack of support from Woodward and the board and what it says about their confidence in Ole than anything else.

The transfer window closes on Aug 8. 10 days left....

If both left, the team would have to make up 25 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League alone to get 6th. I wouldn't say it is impossible that we would drop out of the top six if we lost them without replacements.

Ceiling? Lower than top four, as we didn't get it last season. Will the team we have now, minus Lukaku and Pogba, suddenly be able to make up not only those 25 goals and 10 assists, but also improve on it enough to get top four? No chance.

I would be leaning towards finishing 7th, to be honest, or at least the gap between 6th and 7th will be closed.

That seems perfectly understandable for a player who's won as much as he has who is approaching the best years of his career. A quick look at Real Madrid in pre-season may also have made clear their grass look a little less green (though the likelihood is really that RM haven't got the cash).
