Probably the strongest arial partnership we’ve had since Rio and Vidic.
That’s certainly a possible duo against the lump it teams, Burnley etc. They’re becoming less and less though.

it’ll be Maguire / Lindelof hopefully, that has lovely balance and they compliment each other’s strengths

I’ve heard the argument before but I really don’t see what VVD has to do with Maguire. People might have though the fee was high and maybe a gamble (as all transfers are) but loads of pundits thought he was the best defender in the league, whilst playing for Southampton, plus all it takes is to actually watch them play to see that VVD is far superior.

The argument that unlinked ‘X’ player did well so ‘Y’ player might just has no correlation for me. Yes, it might happen but they aren’t dependent on each other and it’s really just ‘anything can happen’ - You can support any ‘out there’ prediction, like Jamie Vardy won the league and POTY, so let’s recruit a team from non-league footballers...yes strange things happen but based on what we’ve seen, Leicester have fleeced us and are receiving a world record fee for Harry Maguire .
Funny because you're basing us getting fleeced on what has gone before.
Maguire has shown he is top quality, consistently for two seasons now. Both in international level and club level.
Only time will tell if he is value for money, as I say. One thing's for sure, he improves our back four massively.

fecking hell. The price is insane
Should be bought him last season, we would've had top 4.

Hope he's partnered with Smalling which would be our strongest defensively, also a big threat from set pieces. Lindelof is still a weakness in our line up.

So do we play a high press, high line with Slabhead?
Yes. He would play a bit like a sweeper while the likes of Lindelof/Smalling/Jones will be used to press the striker. If teams decide to play two strikers, I would expect McTominay to mark the deeper of the two forwards.

When I watch Liverpool play, Van Djik only engages as the last line of defense. I imagine we'll play Maguire similarly.

We'll wait and see. Maguire seem to be an upgrade on Lindelof. They are both comfortable with the ball with Maguire being physically stronger, better in air and a better leader. They also share the same weakness ie lack of pace. If we play a trio of Maguire-Lindelof-Matic then pace will be a concern.

Smalling provides good aerial dominance + pace. A duo Maguire-Smalling will be lethal at corners.
A) Lindelof isn't slow. Smalling has a higher top speed but across the first 8 yards Lindelof is probably quicker than Smalling anyway which is more important with a high line.
B) Maguire and Lindelof provide more than enough aerial dominance. The premier league is evolving, only smaller teams play lump it football and seldom do they play with two up top, let alone 2 target men.

I honestly don't know how you can draw the conclusion that Smalling will be first choice considering last season, pre-season and all the noises Ole has made about playing out from the back.

He's a really good centreback, but we now have 7 centrebacks in our squad, we need to find away to get rid of at least 2.

Bailly, Jones, Rojo, Darmian (who is decent imo) all need shifting, especially the latter as he too good to be not getting any minutes whatsoever this preseason.

So. Do we spend enough boys?

That's close to 200m. If dybala and fernades indeed comes true that'll bring us close to 300m
James - 15m
Wan-Bissaka - 50m
Maguire - 80m

That’s 145m. And if we sign Fernandes then that’s another 65m. So a little over 200m. How is it 300m?

Net or Gross?

Close to £200m Net but £300m gross.

This is fecking crazy fecking mental. We are the biggest laughing stock of Football now. I feel so disgusted. Ugh.
Yeah the signings of the best defensive rightback in England, and Englands CB is certainly going to make everyone laught at how pathetic we are.

Posts like this are so irritaring, what is your basis for feeling this way? Is it the number? What is your qualification to judge them?

Lindelof last season, while unpolished, was undoubtedly better than any form Smalling has shown in the last 3 or 4 years.

Very happy. The price is shocking but Maguire's a top CB - the best available option out there by a long way. No, Koulibaly isn't an available option at £100m+.

He's a leader; he knows the league; can play; dangerus and dominant in the air; and most importantly, he seemed to really want to come here.

I say he'll be captain within a couple of months and will become a fan favourite quickly. No he isn't worth the price-tag, but it is what is unfortunately. Blame Woodward for not signing him last summer or even before that. Don't blame the player, blame the game.

Welcome, Slabhead!

Onto sales:

Rojo can go right now - take £5m if we have to, we HAVE TO SELL PEOPLE. NOW.
I'd send Axel on loan and listen to offers for Jones.

Maguire, Lindelöf, Smalling, Bailly. If Bailly was fit right now, I'd sell him ahead of Jones.

Everyone is fixated on the fact that Maguire is an improvement over all our CBs. While that is probably true, people are forgetting that he has no European experience. Like, none at all. Even VVD played in the CL for Celtic way back, and that probably helped him in his Southampton days. So the jury is still out for him. Thats why a record fee wasn't the greatest deal, like at all.
He excelled every time he moved to a new club.

I expect him to excel here at United, the final step to be a top top defender.

Great signing.

Why would you loan Axel? Jones and Rojo are always fit. Bailly is out till new years. So we need Axel.

Well done to the club for making the most absurd transfer of all times to happen. Harry fecking Maguire becoming the most expensive defender ever for nearly 100 million euros. What a fecking joke  It's even stupider than Carroll to Liverpool, Higuain to Juve or any other deal. We're about to become the laughing stock of the football world offically. Well done really.

And when you think that last year Ed refused to give the manager the funds to sign him (for far less) or any other defender which disrupted our season before it's even started and we have 6 CBs now that makes things even more absurd and stupid. So Ed admits he made a mistake by that or what? Feckin idiot.

Also, thought Ole knows the profile of a Man United player with keeping the likes of Fellaini, Lukaku etc. out of his selections but turns out he doesn't care about the balance of the squad or know what he wants to do with the players he's got. Good luck playing a high pressing system with Maguire & Lindelöf pairing. He tries to copy Sir Alex but we never made such a stupid deal under Fergie. I swear all Man Utd managers after Sir Alex have an agreement to make it hard for fans to support them.

We all said since he took the job we needed a big summer but what an underwhelming window this has been. Still glaring weaknesses in this squad and we're wasting our money on ridiculously overpriced players.
Christ almighty.

Have a sit down mate.

He’ll improve your lot no doubt. But feck me, what a fee. I think there are probably 10 better CBs playing in Europe attainable for half that price.

I hope all the posters criticizing the VVD fee are behaving the same way right now.

read the full story. Very nice, a little bit of positivity for a change. Specially about the part why he supposedly wants to come. if all the rumours are true about Bruno, Dybala, Maguire with James and Wan-Bissaka this could be a pretty amazing window. All these players also seem to have the right mentality. Yeah, looks like Dybala preferred to stay at Juve but when hes forced out like this and once hes here and the team winning some games with him playing i dont think he will sulk too much. If he joins he will also get a pay rise. Really looking forward to the season to begin :)

The post you're replying to is hyperbolic for sure but you almost understand why people aren't jumping for joy at spending a world record fee on "England's best CB". You would expect a world class talent for that money, and many people (myself included) don't rate him nearly that highly.

When you factor in Ronaldo’s wages that transfer is something like £270m. If you guess Maguire will earn, let’s say, £250k a week, then you’re looking at £140m with Maguire’s contract being a year longer than Ronaldo’s as well. Not to mention Ronaldo signed for them aged 33.

So Ronaldo is about £67.5m a year and Maguire is about £28m a year, meaning that a 33 year old Ronaldo is about 2.5 times more expensive to employ than a 25 year old Maguire.
What were Ronaldo's wages in 2009?

So 10 CBs in Europe attainable for 40m? Please go on.

I’m not a professional scout mate. But it seems to me you went after the most obvious target and got rinsed by Leicester.

Upamecano, Zagadou, Akanji, on the top off my head and that’s Germany alone. I refuse to believe there isn’t Maguire type of talent out there (which is, let’s be real, a tier below world class).

The whole point of this transfer was to replace smalling. Now we have to centrebacks comfortable on the ball which means quicker transitions and midfielders can play further up the pitch

Shocking fee for Maguire. He is a decent defender but my god is that an over payment. You can find defenders of that quality for 40-50 million across Europe.

Upamecano is not available, and he certainly wouldn't be cheaper. Zagadou is not good enough, he gets killed in every big game (Bayern ripped him to shreds this spring). I like Akanji, but again, not that level yet and probably also not available.
