Hope, We Lose
Think Maguire will be an okay signing, in a way going for him made sense to me during the last season.

However the price is almost double what I'd pay for him, so he's going to have to do some amazing things for it to be worth it. I hope he does but I dont expect it

Sums up everything that is wrong with our club at the moment, we could have picked him up for 17m two years ago but no, we can't see the potential so we pay five times the price now. Paying a world record fee for a CB that doesn't exactly set the world on fire, he's good but not amazing. How many top clubs in Europe would crave him as desperately as we have if they needed a CB, few if any I'd say. I just can't get excited about this even though he will improve our defence.
We signed Jones for his potential (probably was the most highly rated young english defender at the time) and it didn’t work. We signed Smalling for his potential (highly rated young defender) and it didn’t work. We signed Bailley for his potential (again was very highly rated young defender) but again it didn’t work.

Hope you see where I’m going here. Signing potential doesn’t always work out at big clubs. This time around we required a readymade quality defender, so Maguire makes a whole lot of sense whatever the price.

I'm looking forward to seeing him and Lindelof together. I think he'll bring leadership and an attitude to our defence that we've been lacking. I've always been impressed with him. Will make a massive difference to our team when our two cbs can play the ball out of defence. Any time I saw him play for Hull or Leicester against any of the top 4 he seemed to up his game. Let's get behind him and I've no doubt he has the attitude and ability to be top class for us

VVD is the best CB in the world right now, I think everybody can agree with that. Maguire in my opinion is not even on the top 10.

VVD
Ramos
Godin
Chiellini
Koulibally
Thiago Silva
Varane
De Ligt
Lenglet
Laporte
Umtiti
I am not convinced by VVD being the top, and I certainly don't think Ramos, Godin or Chiellini or Thiago Silva should be in that list in 2019 but fair enough, that's your opinion. I think Maguire will actually be fine.

Bit late to the party.

Despite me thinking it was never on....

It’s on!!! And the defense looks a lot better now, dare I say it ‘solid’.

I was wrong, I’m now hoping I’m wrong about Dybala.

My negativity drive is fully fueled with the power of ‘doubt=mc2’

Let’s go

Lenglet and Umtiti better really? Hope you are kidding!

Godin and Chiellini maybe 2-3 years ago.

Maguire is a complete defender. His stats don't lie.

I agree. Ramos in particular has become a very average defender. A great leader certainly, but horrible mistake prone.

To be fair, Maguire wasn't that good in 2019 too, most Leicester fans consider Evans better defender than Maguire last season.

I think the fee is probably fair, relatively speaking. Koulibally is probably a better defender but would have cost 40m more. West Ham quoting us 60m or so for Diop who's probably a similar level but not as established. 45m for an perma injured Umtiti.
Other clubs might get a better deal but looking at the alternatives were probably getting as good value for money as we were going to get.

Hope he's partnered with Smalling which would be our strongest defensively, also a big threat from set pieces. Lindelof is still a weakness in our line up.
 How can people say this after he has been alongside Shaw our best player last season?

The modern list is probably something more like VVD, Koulibaly, Varane, Thiago Silva, De Ligt, Laporte and then I'd have Maguire.

So. Do we spend enough boys?

That's close to 200m. If dybala and fernades indeed comes true that'll bring us close to 300m
AWB - 50m
Maguire - 80m
James - 15m
= 145m

Dybala - swap / 0
Fernandes - ~60m
=205m

Not really close to 300m.

To me it seems like recurring theme in the sense United are again paying these top fees, even record fees in some case for players that are not the best at their position. If you're going all out and breaking transfer fees, make sure it's for a player that is legit at the very top or near the top at his position. We've seen it with Pogba, Lukaku and now with Maguire. All decent players but all over payments in terms of their contributions on the pitch. Hopefully this one turns out better for United but what scares me the most about this one is Maguire to me has issues with defending, which should be the most important quality. I don't rate him all that much when it come to defending. In the case VVD I had no such worries, very expensive but I had no doubt that at the very least he was a legit dominant defender. I can't say the same for Maguire.

Do read the posts after that one.

You have every right to be giddy, you got your man and price don’t really matter. Still, I remember I also got ridiculed when I said Lukaku was going to be a bust. It’s only normal you’re happy after such a signing, and I do think it’s a good transfer albeit at an absurd price.
Very convenient to first claim there are 10 better CBs available at half the price and then to go I'm not a scout mate when called out on it. And I'm being kind using the word convenient.

I'm not giddy about the transfer, it's Maguire not Messi but simply put, he's a massive fecking upgrade on the clowns we have at CB and given a choice between the 80mil being spent on him or ending up in the Glazers' pocket, it's an easy choice.

So overall the deal is a fair bit under what it would have cost to sign De Ligt. It won’t stop people going on about De Ligts lower fee mind.

Lukaku hasn’t really been a bust. He’s going to an elite club and valued at the same price we paid for him. His style doesn’t fit for what we want going forward.

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City for £80 million, a world-record fee for a defender.

Leicester had valued Maguire at £95 million, but dropped their asking price after it became clear that the England centre back wanted to move to Old Trafford.

The clubs agreed a fee for the 26-year-old yesterday morning and he is expected to undergo a medical at United’s Carrington training base today. He is set to sign a five-year contract with the option of a further year, and will begin training with his new team-mates on Monday.
From Hirst's article. So we got the fee down from 95 million to 80 million and people are moaning why we didn't sign him month back

The club are surely planning a grand unveiling for the most expensive defender. Along the lines of Sanchez. Some say Maguire's been seen with a flute although nothing is confirmed.

OMG, maguire comes out on OT pitch, 15 concrete slabs, CGI headbutting all of them. Turns to the camera and says "it's hammer time". Fade to black....introducing Harry Maguire and our new Concrete Supply sponsor.

BOOM!! We done, that's a wrap.

90 Mill is insane. There must be alternatives of a similar standard that would not rinse our transfer budget
If after all this delaying it comes out to even more than previously reported, im done
If it's less I assume you will be giving credit where it's due.
Hell yes. Don't mind the player, especially since our other transfer targets have all faded away. Its always been about the price.

So we spent the last 4 weeks negotiating it down to £80m from £95m.

There was plenty in here who just wanted us to stump up what Leicester wanted to get it done. £15m is no chump change and it just goes to show how clueless a lot of people are when it comes to both transfers and basic finance in general.
