EFL cup should be great for players development. Playing against proper players who are physical should be a very good challenge. Gomes looks very much ready for the senior team. His acceleration, close control, ability to beat the press is just very good. Yesterday he was the best player on the pitch and he was playing like Berbatov (making the game look ridiculously easy).

EFL cup and Eruopa league will be good platform to show he is good enough to play for senior team.

Watched the full game yesterday and he looks the most first-team ready player from youth. Chong, on the other hand, should be loaned out to a lower-tier4 club, seems need further growth.

Gomes was a joy with his ball control and movements (his size helps with his turns due to low center of gravity), dont be fooled by his size very diff to shake of the ball, didnt see a bad touch once in the game. He should be in first team ahead of mata / lingard and will give more productivity.

We should offer him whatever he wanted And get him signed asap.

Hell He pushing into the first team this season only at the rate he's going at.

That’s a terrible idea. We obviously have to sign him up, because he’s a huge talent. But you don’t help his development if you give him whatever he wants when he is 18 years old. Every young talent we’ve given a massive contract to, has flopped.

People must think that Nicky Butt, McKenna and Ole are thick lads who will let him walk.

Unless he's demanding ridiculous wages, he'll resign. Seems he has the proper patience and has been told of his role and path to the first team for the current year and beyond.
No one is saying they will let him walk. More that he may not resign due to lack of first team chances. Its a possibility given the rumours that have been around him for the past couple of years and the remaining length of his contract.

Hopefully Ole Butt and McKenna have reassured him and hopefully he believes in them and is patient. Its not a given though that he would be patient.

Its not likely to be a monetary issue

It would probably be easier to swallow the 'be patient' talk if the players ahead of him were performing to the level required at the club or looked like getting there at least.

Ole needs to include him and finally drop those senior players who are not good enough. He talks big about youth yet prefers Lingard or Mata who have been poor for ages

Not necessarily but the most concerning thing about Gomes' situation was that only 4 players got less minutes than him over pre-season. That suggests they don't think he's ready for the first team and if he does only have 12 months left on his deal and he himself feels he is ready then the club have a fight to keep him.

A lot of academy players these days will look at what Sancho has done, he's changed the game tbh

This kid is an artist of a footballer, he has it all.

In a few years when Messi and Ronaldo have retired and we're looking for the next superstars to compare Gomes will be one of them.

And I’ll be equally as annoyed if he ends up abroad tearing it up for a decent European team

Let’s hope he gets minutes. It’s mad how yet again there seems to be obvious decisions that get overlooked. Of course we don’t see everything. But my word...in his cameos alone he has out performed his competition.

Gomes has all the tools to be a top class player so I do not see the need to rush him if he needs a little bit more time. The science team will have all the stats and will know what his body is doing when under the stress of day to day training and 1-2 games a week. It is not just about ability.

The club is very good at making sure the cartilage and soft tissue such as ligaments and tendons are strong enough to endure a long season. It can take one tackle to end a career or sideline the player for a long time so they need to make sure everything is as it should be.

The likes of Oxlade-Chamberlain and Wilshere have been beset by niggles/injuries pretty much all their careers and that is such a shame for 2 fine talents. So I am all for patience with young players.

Greenwood appears to be fortunate that he is ready now much like Giggs was but Gomes might have to wait a little longer as Scholes and Beckham did.

Funny because people were complaining about Matic’s ability to deal a difficult ball from the keeper recently.
3 passes, 3 fecking passes and we were taking a shot on goal, brilliant! We'd likely not see that from the 1st team, Matic would prefer to pass it backwards.

We have a star on our hands with Gomes, he'll play a lot of games this season I think.

Very worried that he's going to get poached by a top, top team. To be honest I wouldn't blame him for snatching at the opportunity.

Gomes was the star of the show again last night. There is no question about how he will fare against the big boys. He can just sweep them aside with his movement. Brilliant, Looking forward to seeing him more this season.

This kid's signature on a long contract would excite me more than any last minute transfer window signings we're likely make.

Well if he’s ever going to get a chance it will be this season. It looks like we won’t bring anybody else in and the att midfield slot us up for grabs, with a year on his contract surely we’ll try to get him minutes to convince him to stay.

He has what nonother midfielder at the club has. He reminds me of Arthur. He took three players out of the game with that turn.

He and Greenwood should be ahead of James in the picking order. They are the reason I am not worried that we are a little light up front.

Totally agree. We can all see his potential, and he has shown many glimpses of his undeniable talent, would still introduce him gradually into first team matches throughout the season (as I would with Greenwood), they are both young, and are probably still growing, I wouldn't want to jeapordise long careers for both of them (and the other youngsters who come into the first team set up) by overplaying them in the next year or two or three. But let's get his signature on that contract first.

If we aren't signing midfielder hopes he gets more chances. That would convince him to stay

This level is just too easy for him. Look at this, players can't get near him.

Will be so gutted if we lose him without giving him a chance.
If we continue with 4-2-3-1 we should start him IMO. A huge talent that can only improve with game time in the first team.

I know it’s not mutually exclusive, but if only one of Dybala, Eriksen and Gomes could be on our books after 8th of August, I would chose Gomes. Even if it meant waiting a few seasons for trophies. The same goes for Greenwood.

That’s how much I love to see that kind of players develop in our own home yard.

Ironically, if there is no last ditch superstar incoming, I’ll be very glad we have Juan Mata and Jesse, as I’m quite sure the ‘kids’ (including James here) will develop better if the onus is less on them to produce results.

If we aren’t bringing in say an Eriksen, Dybala or Fernandes I’d much rather see Gomes given the chance over Mata and Lingard in the central role. Want to see how he would handle it physically with the pace and pressing.

He can work in tight spaces, beat people and can spot a pass which puts him over our other options for me already.

Exactly. It’s painful reading this thread. He’s 18. He can break through this year for sure. Let’s be patient. But the idea that he leaves if he doesn’t start immediately is just stupid,
A top young talent running out of contract and leaving for game time is not exactly stupid though is it? Pogba and Sancho are prime examples of what happens in this situations. I think we will play him so we won't have that problem, again, but if we don't he's off.

I’m getting confused about his position. I know he mainly played as a forward in pre-season but hasn’t he been mainly playing in central midfield? If so, maybe there’s an upside to our lack of resources in that position?
In our current first team he'd play in the AM role just ahead of Pogba and McTominay, he could eventually end up in Pogba's position in the distant future, he certainly has the skills set. Due to his balance and technique he also makes a pretty handy winger.

Not signing a senior AM may end up being a blessing in disguise if it means Gomes gets a solid amount of minutes, he's got a really bright future and it'd be great to have another academy graduate in the first team.

If we don’t sign a midfielder I think he might get his chance and will impress. A midfield of him, Pogba and McT is actually quite nicely balanced although obviously it’s a hell of an ask to rely on him at his age and experience level.

He can play as a 10, 8, or the pivot provided he has another defensive midfielder next to him. And as we know 10s, can play across the front line.

I've been hammering the idea of him playing that Scholes midfield role like when he was with the u19s. He's doing really well as a 10 right now though.

For what team has he been playing as a 10? In the U19 Euros he was playing as an 8 (I think?) and also played as an 8 last night, no?

EDIT: do any of our side even play with a number 10, at any level?!

The lad excites me every time I watch him. Him signing a new deal will be the best business we do this year
