Do people just throw out random names these days? Darmian? He barely gets in as a backup RB, you want him at CDM?
Tbf in a league like the premier league I think just like in Daley blind's case he would be better suited in a central defensive role rather than as fullback

Daley Blind was composed on the ball, I dont see that with Darmian.

Been there done that with TFM already. Whenever he had a shit game, 'X is his position, Y is not', rinse repeat type of shit, worryingly enough they're trying to do the same with Tuanzebe now.
Except people don't want to shoehorn Tuanzebe into DM because he isn't performing at CB, but because Matic isn't trusted at DM.

Other than that, I think the club needs to buy a proper dm. Not waste time with Tuanzebe there or worse, Matic or TFM.

Does he have a good pass in him?
His crossing is not great but he is actually very tidy with his short passing, if we are talking about someone that can cover ground and protect the back 4 whilst doing simple things on the ball he's maybe worth a try over seeing somebody as immobile and slow as matic feature in 30+ games for us again this season.

It’s not going to happen, at least not in this transfer window. We only buy players when it’s blatantly obvious for 2 or more years that we need someone at the position.

I wonder if Jones' injury record would improve if he played there, less last minute buffoonery maybe less injuries.

It would demonstrate his versatility....useless in every position.

Fair enough but from what I have seen of him at international level with Italy he looked relatively calm and technically sound with his passing but admittedly I have only watched about 3 matches featuring Italy with him in the side and I wouldn't claim he would be some amazing playmaker as a defensive midfielder but believe he would do a better job than matic defensively in that role.

I think anyone mobile would do a better job than Matic, looks so slow. The goal against Milan was 100% his fault. Any team in the PL will punish you for those mistakes. The worst thing is all our midfielders make those mistakes. Last season at OT i remember Perreira and Fred making unforced errors from a pass out and we concede. Very simple goals.

You can't just convert centerbacks to holding mids, it's entirely different. Need a whole different mindset in terms of spacial awareness, ability on the ball, knowing where to move and where to close down and where to open yourself up always, with an eye towards your next pass. Doesnt work. People always try it, but it never works.

Ah, the annual "play a cd in cdm" thread. This place has always had an obsession with moving a defender into midfield. It's been the most contentious position since Carrick waned (after RW).

Simply put, defenders just aren't capable of dealing with the hustle and bustle of midfield.

It's not out of the realm of possibility of a defender doing well in midfield, I thought the likes of Luiz and marquinho did well when played as defensive midfielders, I can remember marquinho nullifying pogba in the 1st leg last season.

Tried that with Rio and Jones. It didn't work out fine.

CDM is one of the hardest positions to play in football today, tactically speaking.

Marquinhos played in a strict man-marking role. His role is limited in the sense that he's on the pitch just to limit Pogba's influence. I don't watch much of PSG but that's probably just a setup for the big match.

Chelsea found out that Luiz wasn't that good in the CDM role other than his long balls forward, that's why they brought back Matic.

No.

Signing a midfielder would work best.

United and it's fans has this strange obsession with shoehorning players in other positions... it's mad.
It's hardly a new concept, even our Club Captain is an ex winger now full back. There are so many players who have changed positions and excelled. That said with Axel I'd much prefer him to develop into Maguires first choice central partner, he does seem an ideal choice.

No I know it's not but here at United we as a fanbase seem to cry out for it more than most.. I am sure most of our players have been mentioned in new positions.

We need a specialist DM. Surely Manchester United can afford this.
Yes we do, and yes we can afford one. But it’s clear to see it’s not happening. We already know Fred and Pereira are no good at DM, so now we are going to rely on Matic and McT to cover that position. Given the state of Matic, it’s negligence not even targeting a specialist DM.

Take Lukaku off the market and play him there, his first touch should get the ball to our attackers every time

Every time TFM played DMC he looked very assured in pre season (year before last), his loans have set him back plus his injury but he looked a beast in that position (saying that though so did Pereira)!

Anything is better than Matic, I think McT would do very well there but seeing as we are not buying another CM he might be needed in the Herrera position, unless he goes with a 10 of course.

If you try and turn every ball-playing CB into a DM, you’ll end up with no CBs who are good on the ball.

Tuanzebe is a textbook modern central defender. If we’re looking for a youngster to eye up for that spot, we need to be thinking someone more ambitious, more creative, more of a midfielder, like Garner. In the meantime, McTominay is the obvious first choice.

If Dalot really came on at RB, I think AWB would be an absolute destroyer at CDM. The ground he would cover and the disruption he would create would be remarkable.

I'd rather try that with Bailly, gets him out of the box so he doesn't give away pens with his rash tackles.

Surprised palace didn't stick AWB there given his tackling pedigree actually.
