It has been alluded to that the Didi - Di Stefano dispute wasn't a case of two dominant playmakers not playing well together which is what I had previously believed. What is the full story?

More complicated and a function of media, politics and positional overlaps.

Di Stefano said:
" I heard you are my successor, but you're too old and you're not good enough"
1. Didi was heralded as a successor/replacement for Di Stefano which was not a good way to build relationships with teams Superstar.

2. Positionally the CM playmaking role was Di Stefano's and the strategy of how they'll play together wasn't really conceptualized. Perhaps Didi was expected to play around Di Stefano like Kopa and Puskas did. But then not sure how effective he'd be in a wider role.

I think rather than saying the combo doesn't work, it'd be much more accurate to say it was not given any opportunity to work (or not).
