Rooney is an absolute legend. But I think Rio shades it due to his leadership, consistency and obviously loyalty. If Rooney didn’t try to join a rival, he be regarded much higher by the fans
You’re forgetting Rios sneaky dinner meeting with Peter Kenyon and his own agent in London. Rooney got more stick because fergie made it vocal

@everyone

This is how Rio explained it and I believe it. It’s one thing to explore opportunities and another to actively seek to leave which I believe Rooney did.

Again, I explain that in my new book, but I just want to reiterate that I was never a part of that meeting. I bumped into my agent and he was sat with Peter Kenyon. It was literally just a case of me popping in to say hello. I don’t even think I ordered a drink! I left after 10 or 15 minutes, but somebody obviously took a photo. A snapshot of a moment you can lead to so many stories.

Anyway, my post was not just about this one thing. I also mentioned other reasons why I feel Rio was more important for us. There isn’t much between the two players for me. They are both club legends.
Oh what a coincidence. I don’t believe it

Meh. I think Rooney ended up with more stick for that because he declined more than Rio. Fans will forgive everything as long as you play well.

I truly adore Rio, the best CB we have ever had imo, but Rooney is a different story altogether. He will go down as one of our greatest players, so yeah I think Rooney was a better transfer.

Rooney.

You don't build dynasties around defenders. Defenders are important, but attackers are more important. Top 5ish attacker in the world > best defender in the world in terms of impact for the team.

A poster said it earlier: Rooney was simply box office.

A great attack wins matches. A great defense wins championships.

Rooney. Because Rio was a superb, superb player, but Vidic was the true heart of the defence.

"Everyone is saying that I was definitely going to Manchester City," said Rooney.

"Believe me, if I had gone it wouldn't have been in England."

Don't even know how people answer this. Both absolute legends of the club and integral parts of one of the most successful periods the club has ever seen. I get that attacking players usually get the nod but Rio was something else entirely.

I'd say they are about even.

Rio can lift the vibes in the dressing room. Better character, and would add more to the team.

At their peaks, Rooney without a doubt, and yet strangely I class Rio as a legend and Rooney not

Rooney had that explosiveness which elevated the team. Rooney's early years was magical. His debut while not fully fit versus Fenerbahce

Shame his peak was so early and seemingly short lived.

Agreed, I cab't really pick. There are eleven spots, so I take both.

First of all, that cliche is 100% unadulterated bullshit the saying should be "A great defense won't win you a championship, but a bad one can cost you one". The Edmonton Oilers won championships around their offense. New England Patriots have built their dynasty around Tom Brady I could keep running down the list with dynasties from literally every major sport where the dynasty was built around the offense. Historically speaking, teams with stand out defenses and mediocre offenses winning championships are few and fecking few and far between. The Baltimore Ravens, and MAYBE the New Jersey Devils in recent memory MIGHT be the only examples in any major team sport that I can think of.

It's the exception that proves the rule.
