Why is United's first manager not known?

For the first 30 years or so the club didn't have a manager but rather club secretaries and the team was selected by that person or a committee. Alfred Harold Albut was Newton Heath's first club secretary and therefor the first full-time employee of the club.

I'm not sure about the source on this information but I think it's from The official Manchester United illustrated encylopedia.
