The season preview podcast sees the long awaited return of the Irish tones of Colm @Duafc, who joins Nik @Rood and Mark @Stobzilla to preview the season ahead.
We talk tactics, formation and starting line up for Chelsea on Sunday. Discuss our lack of options for the captain's armband and our feelings about the transfer window.
The main debate of the week is whether we think the squad is ready to challenge, do we need more players or are the kids ready to play their part?

Just for the record: It's just the Bundesliga of the top five leagues which doesn't have 20 teams.

my mistake - I knew La Liga was 20 but thought at least a couple of the others were only 18. Im old enough to remember when the Premier League reduced from 22 to 20 teams!

I was always under the impression that we had more games than other top leagues though - maybe its down to the League Cup, I dont know if any of the other major leagues have a 2nd domestic cup

It's only England with two cups, as far as I know. The Premier League also ends a week before the other 20 team leagues though.

Really enjoyed this. After spending too much time on RedCafe while waiting for the season to start it was refreshing to hear discussion by fans who don't appear to detest all of our players.

So no-one is gonna call Nik out on the fact he was 'Grumpy Old Man' (tm) on about youtube and social media 15 seconds before asking for re-tweets and Facebook likes... ?

(Sorry Nik I just found it hilarious mate!)

Nik secretly wants to be Goldbridge. He craves that cult of personality.

:D

But we are obviously high quality journalism vs the tabloid YouTube crap I was on about !

I understand that there is some disappointment about the transfer window, but I honestly dont get all the negativity - some people actually thinking we have no chance of Top4 and are barely going to finish Top10 which is madness! Perhaps the lack of expectation is a good thing

Im looking forward to the season ahead - feels like a breath of fresh air compared to this time last year (and in fact the last few years) with the focus on homegrown, speed and bringing back the Fergie ethos.

Nik's a walking contradiction anyway; he didn't want Mourinho to be hired by the club in the first place but was also that last of us to think he should be sacked and indeed never even expressed that view before his sacking.

Glad to hear it, if you're a first time listener you will probably find as the season goes on that the pod team's views are more often than not polar opposite to the prevailing winds of those on the Caf.

Not quite true - I was the last one to go 'Jose Out' but I did eventually agree that his time was up in late November (I think it was 0-0 Palace and 2-2 Soton that was the final straw)

Generally not a fan of sacking managers midseason - Moyes was the only one I actively wanted out but I also never wanted him in the first place!

I'm actually not even sure I get the disappointment around the transfer window as evidenced by the (admittedly funny) gif thread. Our defence is clearly strengthened, not only by the two signings, but Tuanzebe coming back as well. Our midfield is slightly worse off depth wise but the top level is about the same, I'd say. In attack we sold Lukaku but he had become a laughing stock anyway so what's the issue? Then we brought in James who at least fits the proposed playing style but has question marks over how good he can become.
Hopefully we'll see a bunch of academy players start to make their mark on this club. Tuanzebe in defence as fourth, maybe third choice behind Maguire and Lindelöf, Gomes as a #10 or as wide attacker together with Chong and Greenwood in attacking positions. McTominay also looks like a seasoned pro almost, so I think he'll have a great season.

Good pod, nice little taster for the season ahead... my biggest concern was whether @Duafc voice would be too quick at 1.5x speed, but you'll be happy to know Colm that it works... just.

Also, am I the only one that has ceased to care about who the captain is? Don't think it really matters much anymore.

There are always people crying about the transfer window, even when winning everything with Fergie some fans still moaned.
I honestly think some are more interested in transfers than the football!

Yes you are the only one, lack of leadership on the pitch has been an issue for years now and will continue to be until someone steps up to become worthy of the armband

Welcome on board mate - gutted that I'm missing the opening game, should be a cracker (cue 0-0 boredraw)

Just finished it. Really appreciate your doing these. Hopefully you've got at least one a month this season, if not every fortnight.

Maybe get a spy vs. spy corner with one of the most negative posters talking to one of the most positive posters for 5-10 minutes :D

Keep it coming!

At least we all agree that seeing the youth come through is pure joy (though we do need a midfielder).

I'm gonna disagree with this. Not that we have lacked leadership but with the idea that captainship really matters. Maguire is not gonna stop being a leader on the pitch if he's not given the armband. Similarly De Gea isn't gonna start becoming vocal and rowsing people if he's given the armband. I think most players don't even notice who has it on most of the time.

that not really the issue - when things are not going well on the pitch then its the captains in the dressing room who make the differecne, the issue at the moment is that we dont have the charachters to make the difference

Maguire may step up but he is not historically a captain so we will have to see if hes upto the job

I do actually want to get some different opinions of the pod - last episode we were all generally of the same opinion that we are ready for a CL challenge

On a time where you had polarising differing opinions on the pod you tried to steamroll the discussion and move on! I had to bring it back up later in the episode to discuss its merits properly.
