He is no better than what you already have.
Disagree with that. Would be an upgrade on Bailly/Rojo/Jones at the very least. Smalling i would say he’s on a similar level and then Lindelof is the tier above.

Correct in that he isn’t what United need though. They need a defender in the tier above Lindelof aka Varane/Alderweireld/Koulibaly.

I think he could have stayed and replaced Phil Jones, Rojo etc successfully, but if Keane were here he would get the same amount of abuse as our other defenders, if not more. Could be a good option and a United-lad but we're not in a position where we have a spot for him. We're already filled up nicely with 3rd choice options sadly.

Why exactly did we let him go without giving him a proper chance? He's better than the chuckle brothers and Rojo.

Van Gaal couldn't get credit for him, so he let him go and promoted players like McNair and Blackett instead. At least that's my theory.

No way is he better than Smalling.

He plays well when the team is set out to defend which Everton did well today. But he isn’t the type of defender you want if you are attacking. He can’t handle pace and isn’t really great on the ball.

Jones and Smalling would look like world beaters in a defensive set up too.

He's probably one of the most overrated former Man United players on here.

Disagree with the negative comments above, good player and very good on the ball. Would definitely have over Smalling, I think a fit Jones (mythical creature) is better than him though.

So you still stick by he’s similar to Smalling?

He’s more Jones but worse and slower. Getting a battering on the Everton forums. No idea how some fans seem to think we missed out by getting rid of him. He’s always got some mistake in him.

He had a really good season last year after a poor first one and now he seems to have reverted back to a shell of the player he was. Seems to be very much a confidence player based on the rest of the team around him which is a bit worrying but makes sense when you realise his two best seasons were when Burnley were doing well and us last season during our great runs against the big teams.

Smalling although I love him was regressing slightly last year and the year prior to it but this Roma move was exactly what he needed. Last year they were on a similar level due to how things were panning out but obviously this season Smalling has been better. Neither of them have had careers which have been on a slow upwards trajectory. They are the type of players that will be up and down and at the moment Smalling is on the up and Keane is on the down. It might change, it might not. The only thing I know is that Silva needs to get out ASAP to try and rectify any last bit of confidence we do have otherwise we are in serious danger of being relegated.
