IIRC, Dennis Rommedahl once ran the 100 meters in 10.2 s.
The danish Antonio Valencia.
He never had an official 100m sprint timed, but was quoted as saying he was pretty sure it was quicker than 11 seconds.

Looking at the pitches that were played on back in the day and the training methods that were used and then throw in what was thought of as a good diet (not including the beer and the ciggies) would be reason enough to not really pay too much attention to those stats.
Plenty of great things about Best and none more so than his bravery as defenders used to kick lumps out of him but it did not faze him and he just kept tearing them to pieces.

Des Walker was feckin rapid, could comfortably out pace most players and probably would do so today if he were in his prime.

No - he didn't. That would have made him the quickest danish person ever as the danish record for 100 metres is 10.29 :)

I did a search and found that if we ignore athletes who used to be footballers - the quickest that have been clocked:

Claudio Caniggia 10,5 on 100m
Theo Walcott 10,6 on 100m
David Odonkor 10,6 on 100m
Michael Owen 10.8 on 100m

Chelsea (the saviours of football) fan.
100 meter times is a pretty bad indicator of pace in football. How many does does a player need to sprint for 100 meters in a straight line?

A 10 meter time would be far more useful.

Feet up at home.
There was a lad at Swansea years ago who used to win the fastest player event every year. Name escapes me.

John Williams the postie! One year anyway.

Came to Wycombe and wasn't great! Fast top speed. Not amazing stamina.

I remember that Rumbelows sprint challenge thing, was there when it took place. Danny Wallace might well have been our participant, got some vague memory of that. He didn't get into the final race as that vid is up on youtube. I don't believe he got to the semis either which were also on that same day but I could be wrong.

Suppose there were quite a few novel events around that time. Went to something called the Guinness Soccer 6 in the late 80s, a six-a-side indoor tournament with some big name players in it, some reserves, it varied by club as to how to serious it was taken.

Can’t remember the name of that CB that used to play for City, he’s a manager now but it was said that he was as quick as an Olympic sprinter

Edit: Keith Curle

There was a pop-science thing where they tested Cristiano Ronaldo in a number of challenges, it's probably still on youtube. Part of it had him up against a not particularly well-known sprinter. The sprinter beat him in straight line speed, I don't recall it being 100m but something shorter than that, then they had them do a bit of a slalom course and Ronaldo beat him easily.

Edit: Was 25m, starts at 2:30 on here -

I saw Danny Wallace go after a ball for Southampton down to the Stretford Paddock corner flag & Wallace was supposed to be quick. And Paul McGrath took a couple of seconds to get out of the blocks. But the Big Man cruised past him without any bother. And Wallace loked a bit miffed about it.

Lee Sharpe was pretty rapid once he got going too.

But footy players mainly do 10/15-20 yard bursts isn't it?
