Great way to start the season. There's still plenty of stuff Ole will look at and hope to improve but I just want to focus on the positives today. Maguire and AWB look like great additions to the first team. We need a bit more time to judge James but the goal was a fantastic moment. What a way to make your Premier League debut! Rashford's second goal was a beauty, the pass from Pogba, the control and finish, all top class. I really didn't expect this after the first half.

Good result, average 1st half but very good second half, I would air on the side of caution because I think Lampard will be out of his depth this season and will be gone before November.

Pogba with 2 assists but he continues to doodle on the ball too long and try to do too much trickery in his own half.

Movement up front looked good with rashford on left instead of martial.

Dream debut for all 3 debutants, made up for James after losing his father recently.

Nice to have a clean sheet and de gea looked back to his normal self.

Pereira's assist from the right wing was good.

Good energy levels, the team was relentless even when we were 4-0 up, maybe that was down to added boost of riding the momentum of winning so comfortably, we will find out in the next coming weeks.

Worried how we will fare against teams that wont allow us so much room to counter attack as I dont know if we still have enough to unlock teams that sit deep.

Being positive: Fantastic win, really clinical in those positions. Occasional poor decision making but rustiness.AWB and Maguire were great, Lindelof looked happy next to him and De Gea seemed safe again. Pogba after a shaky start became better and better and thought McT played decent too.

Being negative/pesemistic: Chelsea were shocking defensively, not many teams will give us their entire half to play in that often. Even then, they caused us issues in the first half and with the occasional chance in the second. Against better finishers we could have conceded a fair few. We essentially seemed to play with no control most the time. Chelsea could bypass our midfield quite a lot which again worries me against others.

But we can only beat what is in front of us and we did the job excellently

Yes lads, brilliant start! Good second half. I feel like the defense won us the first half plus a bit of luck.
Delighted maguire got motm, all I was hearing from Liverpool and city fans during the week was ‘haha, ye paid 80m for maguire’ etc.

I am buzzing! Going to ignore any negatives for now and enjoy the shock result.

Rashford and Martial answered a few questions. So glad they got their goals.

Delighted for Dan James.

Pogba doing what he is does best and gets a couple of assists.

Maguire was a rock, sorry I mean slab. Couldn’t resist

AWB was an absolute machine, the lad is class.

Greenwood got minutes which is good against a good team.

Lindelof looks great next to Maguire and they are going to have a great partnership.

Shaw looked decent and will benefit from the other 3 at the back.

De Gea solid as per. Pereira got an assist.

Lingard had some good bits of play, especially his little one two’s and has bags of energy and good movement. He showed a glimpse of what he can do when he was about to pull off a great dribble past their whole back line and was hacked.

McTominay much better than Matic, but is NOT a holding midfielder.
Agree with everything especially the bolded part, if we had a proper out and out defensive midfielder to play alongside McTominay and Pogba in the biggest games away from home we’d be potentially very strong.

I actually think we’re only a defensive midfielder, a playmaker and a right sided attacker from having a very good team packed with pace and fluidity.

Wow, what a way to start the season.

Some might say the result flatters to deceive, and United were lucky, and while that does have truth to it, I offer a slightly different view. I think at the start of the game United were a bit nervy. The occasion (starting the season at home in a big game) got to them, while Chelsea game into the game hard. United were certainly lucky the game was still 0-0 when Rashford got an admittedly soft penalty, but after that I think it all fell into place. Nerves were settled, and Maguire took control of the defence. He was a rock, and it was amazing to see the lad in his first game at United being such a defensive leader. Constantly talking to other players, giving them instructions, being active. He looked every bit an £80m player.

Wan Bissaka was also immense, and the thought of him and James making overlapping runs down the wing is almost erotic. I think United will get a lot of joy out of that pairing once they fully settle in and develop a partnership.

While I would agree that Chelsea certainly fell apart, I don't think it's just because they're shite, I think United deserve the credit for that. They were constantly countering with amazing pace and constantly looked to exploit any mistakes they created with fast runs and great crosses. It was so heartening to see United constantly go for it, and not just sit back and invite pressure (and problems), with the exception of the last few minutes of the first half.

I still don't think anyone should get carried away. Not signing a defensive midfielder or a number 10 will cost United points, and the squad is still so very thin. We are one injury away from Matic, Young or Smalling starting, and those aren't comforting thoughts. I still think this will be a difficult season, but you couldn't start it much better than absolutely demolishing a supposed top 4 rival. It's had to have given a young team a lot of self-confidence, and even if I do think it will be a tough season, I also think there will be a lot to enjoy.

Happy with that start to the season, outside of Liverpool you couldn't be more pleased to hammer a side than Chelsea.

Wasn't a perfect display especially 1st half but it always good to have plenty of room for improvement after winning a game 4-0. Great debuts for Wan Bissaka,Maguire to keep a clean sheet and the icing on the cake was James getting a debut goal.

Martial goal ended the game as a contest and it shouldn't go unnoticed that he's now wearing the number that Mark Henry was wearing last year. Roll on the Wolves game, owe them big time for last season.

A game of two halves really. We looked very nervous and unsure in the first half but as soon as we got that second goal we looked fantastic and i can't believe we won that 4-0. I almost had a tear in my eye when James scored. You could just feel the emotion he was going through in that moment and so pleased for him. The best part about today's result is the average age of that starting eleven. Such a young team that can only get better and better.

I loved the way United scored on the counter for the last goal. Was beautiful and vintage Manchester United!

If we played well we’d be dangerous.

Top job today. Chelsea there for the taking.

I don't care how, I am enjoying every second of that victory because if we drew at home or lost, the media and the world would all be about how Lampard is the next genius in football. Ole is so underestimated, it's criminal. So 4 goals are great, no excuse, Ole put United in the right track. Full stop.

And just for that, that win is invaluable. Let's go get 4 straight before the breaks, and keep winning after.

The improvement in the back four allowed us to attack in numbers. In that way, it wasn't a bad summer in that we bought really well. Just short of a player in the middle.

I have to whine about one particular thing.

This team needs to stop it with the flicks and tricks until we gain some momentum playing basic find-a-player-in-space-and-pass football. They're overdoing it, especially in situations where we're not necessarily in control of the game.

Other than that, this is the best counter-attacking football we've played in years.

The performance during the first half was very worrying. They looked like a team a cohesive unit, while we faffed around, uninspired, relying on individual brilliance to make something happen.. I fully expected Chelsea to score in the second half. Thankfully, we took our chances with panache, while Chelsea was made to rue missing theirs. Luck played its part of course, but Chelsea seemed to be much more subdued in their approach to the game after half time. It's still early doors but both teams would do well to learn from their mistakes in this game. And that goes double for Lampard; I think his poor game management was what ultimately led to their collapse.

A very encouraging start, but there is still room for improvement in some areas, most notably in our pressing and in our ability to retain possession.

Red Card for Casemiro!
We knew about our weaknesses already. I won't get into those.

But we have improved on so many fronts, it's very promising. The solid defence with De Gea behind them, the moments of magic from Pogba, the sheer raw pace and energy from Rashford and James, the skills from Martial and the return of the tenacious never-stop-trying attitude that Ole had instilled in us in the early part of his tenure - I have hopes that we will see some good football this season.

Happy times are here again.

Both teams were young (I read we had the lowest average starting age in the league this weekend) and both teams played their age with some great play, energy and creativeness, and each team made mistakes. Quickness in the modern game is so important and OGS played a quick team. I'm so glad he didn't start Matic and Mata.

- Pogba looked a bit rusty and still showed so much class especially that ball to Rashford
- Maguire was immense and maybe MOTM. Lindelof also played well and this could be a great partnership.
- AWB is a force
- Rashford had some good moments but he had so many odd touches when he dribbles and that pass to Lingard was terrible with too much pace. He doesn't even seem to know how to take a couple of simple touches to get off a shot, he seems to have to think about it. I love, though, that we have young players ready to play if Rashford and Martial are not up for it. Competition is a wonderful thing.
- Lingard and Andreas seemed to disappear for periods of the match.

Great win and I can't wait for the next match.

Game reminded me of when I play my younger brother on fifa. I let him play like barcelona but still end up smashing him 4-0...

Great point, the flicks & undercutting of passes i’m attacking areas could be very costly in the coming months.

The lacklustre nature for me was summed up by Rashford’s 1-on-1 with the defender when he could have had a chance at a hat trick - he just seemed to stop thinking & ran straight at the defender.

Delighted for all the lads. I literally got a shiver up my spine each time they celebrated a goal. The unity and togetherness was very strong amongst every player on that team today.

The fact Smalling, Jones, didn't even make the bench and Matic, Mata and Young didn't start fills me with warm and fuzziessss.

It's Ole at the wheel again boys!

Rashford and Martial tallied as many goals against top 6 opposition today as our previous number 9 did during his entire tenure :lol::lol:

I thought mctom was good at times today. Not flawless but good. Pogba contributed so little in the first half that he had to do a lot to compensate. Might be that mctominay is good but just not good enough to do it all on his own like kante or someone similar have done in the past
Exactly what i mean. I'm a huge fan of McT but I think hes more of a CM than a CDM. Someone established like Kante or similar is what I'm talking about.

Great win, but 4-0 is unfair result. I am not even sure if we deserved to win. Anyway, in this game not always best team wins. Many times we were victims of bad luck and lost games we clearly should have own and were a better team.
Delighted we started with a win. I am hoping cohesiveness increases as the season goes.

Fascinating how respectful of and fascinated by Mourinho the pundits are now he's actually in a room with them, isn't it.

A good result and a good second half performance, nothing more. This is the worst Chelsea side in about 25 years lets not forget that. But onward and upwards and lets start getting ready for Wolves.

Me too. :(
But, before the game told my husband we will score 4, he laughed,, and said "in 4 games, maybe". Now I'm patiently waiting for him to come home. :smirk:
You're a woman? Nice! Feel there's quite a few of us now, maybe we should start a club.

The way Martial played it back to Pogba near the end before Pogba stormed through for James' goal was beautiful. That's the right kind of flick. Rashford's flicks are hit and hopes at the minute.

Really good win, great performances from Maguire and Lindelof, Wan-Bissaka and Shaw looked good too. Pereira did well for the assist but looked ineffectual in general throughout the game. Think McTominay and Fred in a midfield 2, and pushing Pogba up the pitch more is the way forward.

Really happy for Martial and Rashfod getting on the scoresheet, well taken pen from Rashford and quality finish for the second. Martial's ability to hold the ball up and link play is a breath of fresh air as opposed to Lukaku.

Still a little concerned about midfield, but honestly think we're one top midfielder and a top class RW away from being a top side again (if we manage to keep Pobga).

There are more positives than negatives to take from the game which is a nice change. We played with a higher intensity, but I think the team need to learn how to temper that high press with a little control too. At times we looked like we were trying to do everything with too much pace. When we have the ball we can afford to be more patient and dictate the game, but were still not a season into Ole's reign yet so hopefully that will come.

A little fortunate not to have conceded a couple in the first half, but took our chances well when they came. All in all a satisfying performance with positives to take, and also work to be done.

This is what is happening in this thread.

We beat Chelsea FOUR nil. We absolutely batter them. Our new signing scores. Our young home grown striker scores. We keep a top four rival to a clean sheet.

“First half was lucky”
“We’ll be punished in other games”

feck me! Enjoy it! We just beat Chelsea 4-0! I’m going to get a massive pizza and then go the pub. If you are thinking ANYTHING negative after that just leave football behind.
Absolute Gospel this..
4-0 fantastic, more than half were academy players.
Great fecking performance.

My first ever game in Old Trafford, and WHAT A GAME!!! Thoroughly enjoyed it!!! Still early days, but AWB and Maguire are excellent signings. Was pleased to see James opening his account on debut. Great cameo for Greenwood - he could have scored with the first touch.

We need to invest in midfield to compete for top 4.
