Lindelof was great today after the shaky first 15 minutes that the whole team had. A joy to watch on the ball and seems a lot more confident playing next to someone like Maguire and AWB, it's just so much easier to pass to them even in more difficult situations.

I thought he was far too passive in that moment of defending when Barkley pulled the ball to his left and Dave made a big save. Stood off and made it easy to get a shot off, another foot to the side and that game might go very differently. That and the header came in a small period, apart from that he was decent and showed much more of his ability on the ball than ever before.

This line-up of the defense must be Ole's first choice for a long time to come. When Lindelof works so well together with both AWB and Maguire already, I think they can be absolutely fantastic if they get more playing time together.

Maguire brought out the best in Lindelof no doubt about it. Finally I feel we have a pair that can make us solid again.

It's just a shame the midfield looks so weak.

Good performance, looked extra confident with Maguire next to him rather than one of the Chuckle brothers.

The commanding presence of Maguire upped his game a lot. Lindelof looks so much better with a proper leader in defence.

Good game from the whole defence, even though it was close at a few occasions. The best was how calm the four at the back are with the ball. No stress at all under pressure. You need four defenders with good feet to achieve that.

Good performance and looks so much better than he did next to Smalling and Young. That little turn he did under pressure was great.

The Ice man cometh. Looked a bit more like the guy from Benfica today. There was a funny moment where he was between Maguire and I think Pogba and he looked tiny standing next to them.

I had a quite interesting chat with a guy that played with Lindelof a few years in Sweden when he was a young lad. Apparentely Lindelof quit playing football for a full season at the age of 13-14. He wanted to be a hockey player. He was good but not superdupertalented. I asked what his best qualities was at that age. His answer was his first touch, positional play and maybe most of all his ability to simplify things. He never got himself in difficulties. Always seemed to have space and time. He was never the fastest or strongest. So not much has changed.

After he started playing again things happened quickly. The sporting director in the club, Västerås SK, believed in him very much and was the main reason he got the chance in first team at the age of 16 I believe. After 6 months he captained the team.

It always seemed the logical choice that we needed a quality partner for Lindelof. Makes my eyes spin reading some of the comments contesting the notion he was our best defender last season. He was clearly one of the very few to distinguish himself in any capacity. Calm and assured on the ball, and superb positional sense. He has weaknesses to his game, and they are perfectly complimented by Maguire. Lindelof is excellent, and he showed it again today. fecking laughable people saying Smalling came anywhere near his performance levels last season.

Yep, Lindelof was miles better than Smalling last season, it wasn't even close. It either comes down to agenda or just thinking being a CB is all about being good in the air.

I don't get how can anyone still doubt him.
Because good defenders just don’t completely miss their headers by getting in all sorts of weird body shapes. Lindelof is fine but he has a mistake in him almost every game.

Pretty much. It is also so clear that defenders like Smalling are just a thing of the past. If you cannot play with the ball at your feet, you just cannot play for the top clubs. If we had had Smalling playing today, we would never have kept a clean sheet. The confidence and calmness, and astute use of the ball that Lindelof and Maguire brought today, set the tone for the whole team. With Tuanzebe being on the bench, it seems pretty clear that for Solksjaer, he knows exactly what he wants. Defenders that can not only defend, but also play. I think Smalling will be gone from the club in the next 12 months. Along with Rojo and Bailly. What's keeping Jones here is that he is actually a fairly decent footballer with the ball at his feet, and it is clear Ole rates him higher than Smalling.

I don't even remember the last mistake he did that costed us something but apparently he has "a mistake in him every game". If you are expecting us to get a defender who never misses a header you are in for a shock.

Yes I do expect a CB to never miss an uncontested header. He did that today leading to Emerson hitting the post. Sure it didn’t cost us a goal today but it was only inches away from Chelsea equalizing.

Both Lindelof and Maguire have teeney tiny bit of element of Softness in them in terms of getting in the line of the shot and aggressiveness as a whole. Other than that both are very composed and disciplined and good on the ball.

But rarely does it cost us.

Nervous start like the rest of the team but overall very good. Him and Maguire make a good pair of modern defenders that can both defend and play football.

Best performance from him in a utd shirt without doubt. He's developed further during the summer and pre season. Looking the part now and certainly proving me wrong.

Yeah that was poor defending. The basic aspect of it was the right idea, close the gap to not let him come on to his right foot but he left way to much space for when he dragged it onto his left foot for him to get a shot off. Should be much closer when he drags it so he can block the shot. Apart from that and the header though, he defended well and look composed throughout.

Not good enough for a top 4 team for me.
Got too many limitations in his game. Average at defending, average in aerial battles. Where he shines is his passing.
But yeah, i am not convinced. Tuanzebe is the future.

Thats the way he always does it. Force the player out and to let him shoot at first post with poor angle and wrong foot. I think he did this 5-7 times last season and it was always a save for DDG as he knows where the shot will come and there will not be any bouncing on Lindelof. Maybe it makes Lindelof look passive and DDG good but it is really just a good cooperation between them.

Thought he was questionable yesterday. Shaky header led to one chance and basically gave Barkley a free shot from 8 yards out at one point. Seems to also be getting credit for fluking his way out of a dangerous situation caused by his own poor control.

There does seem to be some overrating of him going on at the moment. The post above suggesting that letting Barclay have a free shot at goal 8 yards out because De Gea would save it is a good example. We got away with it because Barclay failed to hit the corner but it’s clearly poor defending.

I'm unsure why people think Tuanzebe is better than him and will take his place soon. Throughout pre season, it was clear that Lindelof is still a level about Axel. I do hope Axel can grow into his promise, but I don't think he's as good as either of our first choice centre backs at the moment.

Lindelof had a good game yesterday with a couple of mistakes in there. Needs to iron those out of his game.

I'd hope not when we've just spent 80 million on one of them!
