It's a sad reflection on the club when the club captaincy goes to a player who is unlikely to play much next season.

DDG and Lindelof are too quiet and you can't have a captain like Pogba who sulks when things are not going his own way. Not sure any of these 3 would be capable of motivating, inspiring and rallying the troops when we're in a hole!

The only obvious option is to give the armband to Maguire, he's the only one with anywhere near the right leadership qualities required to captain the team.

Friend sent me this:

Do you think Ed sits there in his castle and thinks it’s Sunday night I’m bored. What can I do

Announce we can’t sign dybala
And then throw in Bruno too

And oh wait lets announce young as captain too. That will be great.

And then Monday morning I will announce maguire and the fans will be happy again

If PP commits his future to the club, I can see him becoming captain.

Maguire is one to watch, but he has to be here 1-2 years before being considered for captaincy.

Young is a stopgap captain, and he gives 100%. It's not his fault that the club have played a 33 year-old (who's primary position is not as a defender) as the first choice RB. Frankly the abuse Young gets on here is disturbing.

I think it's been made pretty much clear to Ashley Young that he won't be the starting option for this season and therefore will be captain in more of a team leader role and as a dressing room motivator. He will get games but DDG will pick up the captaincy on most occasions.

A good decision. Even though you could make a case for DDG, Maguire, Lindelöf and I fully expect it to be awarded to someone else next season. A team captain debacle would be disruptive for the squad at a stage when the thing we need most is stability and focus on our season targets.

Dunno about anyone else but I suddenly look at the squad a see quite a number of leaders there now, Maguire, McTominay, Pogba, Rashford all look like they have leadership like qualities

Since when did Rashford and Pogba have leadership qualities? Did I miss something in the match yesterday?

Reckon Maguire has it as of next season.
Only way he gets it now is if De Gea leaves. Ole's almost may his bed now when it comes to the captain. Unless of course we quickly switch it up in the next game otherwise I reckon it's De Gea's

No, because basing anything on one match would be silly
As would claiming those two have leadership qualities!

Beans looks up to feckin Lingard and Pogba cries whenever anything goes against him.

I'm certain Maguire will get it next season, and I wouldn't be against giving it to him permanently in a couple of months if he's showing signs of leading the team. DDG and the others won't be very happy if he gets it straight away, but if he lifts our team up he'll have earned it.

I don't think that a goalkeeper can direct and control a game effectively. The captain needs to be able to influence play by being mobile enough to correct problems. He should also be talented and tough enough for others to respect him. There wasn't much please and thank you going on with the likes of Keane and Robson. Maguire strikes me as a no nonsense type who might fit the position.

McTominay isn't a bad shout if his game continues to improve. The way he seems to have taken James under his wing is great to see.

The era of the big, strong captain seems to have past us.I don’t think it’s such a big deal anymore, the manager sets the standards at the club these days.If De Gea wants it,then we should give it to him....It would be another way of showing him how much we value him as a player...,Give it to De Gea,no big deal...,Plenty of goalkeepers have captained big clubs over the years,Buffon,Casillas etc etc..,,

You may be right but that doesn't mean it is wrong. Someone for the team to look towards when things aren't going well is very important and Maguire for me will be superb. I think this is why Ole hasn't already given an onfield player the armband already. Pogba would have been the obvious choice but Maguire is a much better character for the role.

It's not ideal for your captain to not be a guaranteed starter, but there's more to being a captain than always being on the pitch.

I remember reading, I think it was in Keane's book, about all the off field responsibilities it carried, such as negotiating the team's bonuses, arranging off field team building activities, looking out for teammates if they have issues with the manager and all sorts.

With all that in mind, Ashley Young is a pretty good choice, he will almost certainly have his teammates best interests at heart and has always put the club ahead of his own personal achievements.

You cannot make Maguire captain straight away after joining, he has been here 2 weeks. Keeping Young as captain for a year opens up the slot again next year in my opinion. I think Ole will keep De Gea as vice next season and providing Maguire has a great season, will make him captain for 20/21.

He's the only automatic name on the team sheet. This is a logical choice.
Good point. Our most experienced players will not likely be out there each week. I’m not convinced DDG is a natural born leader, but he certainly can develop into an effective one.

I”m not entirely comfortable with a new signing being made the captain.Maguire looks terrific and he may be a good leader, but I would consider him for the captaincy after a couple of seasons.I think that at a club like United we have to give the captaincy to someone who’s been performing consistently for the club for a significant period of time.Anointing a new signing as club captain may not go down well with everyone in the dressing room...

Usually I would agree with you but after one season Maguire will be ready, there are no other alternatives that I can see. I always think a captain should be playing regularly and he will be. Natural leader.

Well that's got me flummoxed, other than De Gea, I don't think anyone meets that criteria.
Maguire is the ideal man for the job, makes absolutely no logical sense to me to not give him the job.

Maguire will still continue to be a leader on the field, with or without the armband. But I think a lot of folks in the dressing room will be upset at him being anointed captain immediately...I think that De Gea should continue to wear the armband, especially if it helps in getting him to sign a new contract...

I tend to beleive that the captaincy is a responsibiltiy, not a performance reward. We've been without an effective captain for years due to our lack of leaders in the team. Currently, only Maguire fits the bill, though if you give it to DDG this season, you cant really take it away from him next season. Can you?

Maguire can still be a leader without the armband, can’t he?He can’t still have a big influence on the group even without the armband....But giving it to De Gea might help in getting him to sign a new contract....Maguire here for the next 6 years, now we need David signed up on a long term deal..

If you consider the purpose of a captain (especially for an attacking side), DDG is an illogical choice.

You wan't somebody who can inspire, be visible, commanding and vocal. De Gea will 99% be out of sight for all players.

I'd consider Rashford, Pogba or Lindelöf. Maguire as first pick if he wasn't new.

The argument for Rashford is that he stands for all our "buzz words" - youth, courage, success. Unquestionably a United player through and through, works his ass off too.

It’s bad when we speak of potential captains who can lead and inspire and we can only pick a GK who is diddering over signing a new contract and a centre back who has just walked into the club.

Yep. A good season under his belt and Maguire gets it within the year. All Ole does to remove the De Gea expectation is indicate that he prefers an outfield captain so that they can discuss issues with the officials.

When asked about the captain, Ole said you will know in the Chelsea game. If we go by that then De Gea will be the captain whenever Young is not playing.

Club Captain should be long standing respected player in and around the club.to do this job one does not have to be playing every week. We don’t see what players do in this respect so have to trust the managers/players choice.

On field Captain is a very different thing and I can’t see much past Harry tbh.

De Gea can’t control his penalty area never mind the whole team....

I want the captain to have the obvious elements of leadership, etc. But I also have the romantic idea that the captain should be someone who has been loyal in good and bad times. I also want the player to be given in the first XI, even after a patch of poor matches. The last criteria is only fulfilled by DDG and to some extent Pogba. I expect Maguire to be given as starter, but after what happened with Sanchez I am not sure until I see it. I say go with Young asong as he stays, then give it DDG until any outfield player deserves it. Of the future prospects I only see Maguire and Lindelof as possible. Maguire because I believe he has it and Lindelof because I have seen he has got it in him, but he's not there yet.

Captain Slabhead has a nice ring to it. Sounds like something out of Guardians of the Galaxy
