Him and Pereira clearly were the weak links in our team. He did not do much except for one or two dribbles and some off the ball pressing / movement

There were two or three situations in first half when Martial was pressing their CB, yet Lingard was nowhere near his man (LB) which Chelsea then used as passing option to build from the back.

Don't know if that were tactial instructions but was weird to see trio Rashford, Martial and Pereira pressing hard yet Lingard being far away from them.

Was better second half but still that's not something to cheer about.

If we want to continue such style it is absolutely crucial that output is spread across the front 3, we can't carry someone like him who doesn't score or assist.

Wasn't his best game. A few bright moments but he knows he now has competition in the likes of Greenwood, James, Chong so he will have to up his game.

Also, he probably is one of the easiest players to dribble past when in our half just doesn't stuck in at all.

There you go. Most accurate passer of our starting XI. Including centre-backs (which is unusual) And almost twice as many passes as Pereira.
Well because Pereira was even worse than him. Both not nearly enough involved in the game. When he actually was involved he was decent I'm not denying that but he he wasn't nearly enough.

Watching a match and having the capacity of understanding who does what and if it is effective or not...that is your problem.

Lingard was very good today. Majority of people on the Caf and on YouTube will agree that Lingard was very good today.

Did you not see the first goal? Why did the ref allow advantage for Rashford...oh that's right, Lingard closed down the Chelsea player who pinged the ball off Lingard and it went straight into Rashford's path through on goal.

Did you not see the second goal? Rashford dribbles down the left channel, Lingard makes the correct run and angle, retrieves the wide of the mark pass from Rashford, quickly lays it off to Pereria who beats Zouma and delivers a peach of a cross to Martial.

Did you not see the 3rd goal? Quick interplay down the right touchline, Lingard is the option for the inside pass and continues to link the play quickly for Pogba to transition quickly up the pitch via pass over the top. The tempo was quick and it enabled Rashford's run to be rewarded.

Goodnight now.
no, that’s your problem. Making up a lot of shit, is apparently another.

Think a few are going overboard with the praise, he was pretty decent in the second half but awful in the first.

All of the players ahead of Pogba/McTominay suffered from our lack of control in midfield. I saw a stat early in the second half which had Chelsea’s two CM competing more passes in the opposition half, individually, than our two combined.

So Pereira, Lingard, Rashford and Martial were competing for scraps ahead of them. This problem was exacerbated by our other attacking players generally losing the ball far too easily. Lingard, to his credit, maintained possession far more effectively than those around him. Which had an important positive influence on the overall pattern of play. As we saw with his involvement in three of the four goals.

That is because he went backwards with many of his passes and mainly played it safe, once all the way back to De Gea if I am not mistaken.

Contrary to general opinion yesterday, I don't think he was bad, and certainly was better than the usual shit performances you would expect from him. He was still our worst player in my opinion. Pereira pressed just as hard, tracked back more and got a good assist in comparison.

I cna't tell if you're being serious, either.

I'm in the middle of a rewatch right now. Tell me which minute you're talking about and I'll keep an eye out for it.

I generally rewatch all United matches at least once, depending on the gap to the next game. What you've claimed is not true at all.

I'm with you on this Dante . Lingard for all is other faults is usually very good with his one touch passing that can keep us flowing . I do remember him holding the ball once yesterday because everyone around me was screaming pass at him . But he is there to do a job for Ole and if he wasn't doing it he wouldn't be playing

Not suprised seeing that he played in his favoured position in the second half but played out of position in the first.

I thought he was good yesterday, one of our better players. Chased and rushed the Chelsea defenders tirelessly and didn’t carelessly give the ball away.

To be fair, sometimes you need someone to maintain possession, even if it just means recycling the ball, especially when everyone else is giving it a way every other time they receive it.
Otherwise the pressure on our defence would have been intolerable and I think Chelsea would have grabbed a goal at some point.

Thought Lingard had a good game yesterday, needs to add an end product this season if he’s going to be starting, which it looks like it will. If not, he’s pointless against most of the teams we come up against.

Just as well United won 4-0 yesterday, if they had lost 0-4 Jesse’s detractors could have had a field day! Just like Darren Fletcher and John O’Shea, players I saw give their best efforts in the shirt right through the academy to the first team. Sure they had poor games, but were honoured to wear the shirt and give their all for the club and fans. I was really proud of the fact six of the players that represented United yesterday were from the academy. Until I see a player not giving his all they have my full backing. If they are not good enough then I’m happy for the manager to make that call.

I think his competition is more Mata, Gomes, Pereira or playing Pogba as a 10 but putting Fred deeper. He shouldn't be used wide right and just has a far better impact when used as a 10 IMO.

He played well. Does not come up on the stats so people will eventually forget and use it against him.

I thought he had a very good game. Wasn't as much of a threat as Rashford and Martial but he didn't need to be. He worked his socks off, made good runs to break the lines, and was very sharp on the ball. We know he's not that productive which is why he shouldn't play every game, but in games like these he has a lot of value.

Haha...I didn't make up shit. You're a hater just hours after United won 4-0 against Chelsea. It's okay if you don't understand how players provide to the greater good of a team.

If I am wrong, I'll gladly say I was wrong. But not yesterday about Lingard. He plays a very underappreciated role for United and it's very clear to many just how important it is. Margins are very fine at the top, thus his direct involvement in 3 goals yesterday were imperative to United's victory.

He is an allegedly attacking player, his whole purpose is to assist or score goals, he does neither on a regular enough basis. Yesterdays performance was acceptable. No more. Last season despite playing most games he made a smaller attacking contribution then Liverpools fullback, a defender contributed more in an attacking sense than him. Its no good saying multiple managers pick him so he must be good, you can only piss with the cock you have got, and we have bigger problems to sort first. Millions of people watch love island, it doesnt mean its good.

His whole purpose is more than just goals and assists. He gets picked by every manager because what he offers to the team is important. That is not me saying he does not have bad games, because every player does.

I didn't think him (or Andreas) were bad but they both seemed to not really know what exactly their role was. Both looked good when they got involved but just weren't involved enough to really make any impact.

He has more bad games than good, he shouldnt be the first out the door, but if his output this season isnt greatly increased from last then he needs to be gotten rid of next summer..

Just don't like his body language out on the pitch. Apart from that a great allround performance from him. The trio Rashford/Martial/Lingard looks very promising.
You dont like His body language?

You mean you dont like how he looks when he's sprinting all match long, leading the press front the front and making smart of the ball runs when we are in possession?

There's plenty to criticise him for but c'mon

Just think of him as an attacking version of Milner or Henderson. Can be very important to the team in the right role and with high quality around him; remove those conditions, and he's not so good individually.

You're having a laugh with yourself. He's an issue when the team isn't firing or clinical like it was yesterday. There are players out there who can create more and still press/close down, work tirelessly off the ball, but United don't have that player right now (and for the past few years) as it relates to how Ole and staff want the team to play.

You say it's like Twitter...you must be one of those people on Twitter because I am not. Have a lay down and come back next week.

Exactly. People can't questioned their workrate, as they both covered the field really well. It's just they weren't effective to make themselves available to control the midfield. Thus this allowed Chelsea to get a grip on the midfield battle, with 18 shots.

They both did contribute one way or the other to all the goals, though. So maybe that's their tactical role.

Ok body language maybe not the correct word. He put in a good performance yesterday and we'll leave it at that. If he carries on putting those kind of performances in I'll be more than happy.

I've been highly critical of Lingard for years but I thought he was pretty good yesterday actually.

Deifintely looks stronger, wasn't being shrugged off the ball as easily.

That is exactly where you got it wrong. I think @Dante gave a decent explanation of what Lingard does. He is also capable of scoring and assisting regularly if he gets to consistently play in his clearly-stated favoured position. We've wasted a few years playing him on the wing, but that will probably change this season. His biggest drawbacks won't allow him to perform with any sort of consistency from the wing and pretty much eliminates his biggest strength.

He still needs to do a bit more, but when everyone else around him is supplying the goals his work ethic, off the ball movement and defensive abilities are a massive plus.il

If martial or rashford are off form the questions becomes whether he can step up and provide key goals and chances

I thought he was poor first half but much improved second. He seems to have baulked up a bit as well as wasn’t getting pushed off the ball too easily. A couple of good runs which caused them a few problems and were bringing him down to stop him.

I shamelessly subscribed to his Youtube channel when he did a video with Ian Wright and he's just uploaded this week a video about shirts he's worn.

I respectfully disagree with those who feel Lingard achieved nothing in the first half. His pressing was fundamental to the opening goal.

Yes, it was a clumsy challenge from Zouma, and yes it was a well taken penalty from Rashford. However, Lingard's persistance was crucial.

Lingard to Pogba to Rashford

You can see it's something that's been worked on. As soon as Lingard gives it to Pogba, Rashford knows what is coming

It reminded me of Rashford's goal against Spurs.

Rashford knows what's coming

Great post.

For his lack of technical ability, Lingard remains a very useful player.
