Hopefully getting no 9 back means getting his mojo back. We need him and Rashford to perform all season, They're our best chances of scoring goals.

It looked like the ball went off his left thigh then onto his right leg and in, for the goal, anyone else see that? Massively lucky.
Something like that. It looked an easy right foot finish but he swung and missed and it cannoned in off his left knee. Without that goal it would have been another 5/10 performance for me. At least he ran about a bit though. The very least he should do for his 300k per week.

Ran his ass off today, which was good to see. Mobile, and that pass for Pogba before James goal was top notch. Like others have stated, consistency. I'd love him to fulfil his potential at Utd.

Smiled and pointed to his number in his celebration. Poor guy has been depressed ever since he got shafted off it

Rewatched the goals and didn't notice at the time how he actually brought his hands to his face to "make" the smile - obviously he's probably read a lot about his on field looks of sulkiness.

He did score 20 was it in his first season when he was one of the main forwards. It's just one game but, man hope he continues both the effort and the scoring.

This is just my impression, but lucky goals are not great indicators of form. When we've had strikers in droughts before and they got a lucky one, it didn't herald an increase in form. Now, I thought Martial looked fine overall, and had a good preseason. I've wanted to see him at striker again ever since he was moved left, I'm satisfied with him, Rashford and Greenwood. But I think it's worth noting it wasn't the kind of finish he'll need to succeed regularly.

I don't know what happened to this guy, all of a sudden he is working hard, pressing and even made sliding tackle/interceptions. He has fire in his belly, huge season for him.

I don't think his performance was very good, I have seen him even better when in possession but his work without ball was impressive. That's one of the area where he needed big improvement and looks like he is working on it.

Yep. Big change in him. It probably goes to show how important it is to have players happy and try to play the right way. Think him, Pogba and DDG would have been gone had we not made that change in manager when we did.

Almost fell off my chair when he sprinted full pace and went to ground to block a clearance by Azpilicueta

Keep the work rate up and he’ll have a good season. I think there are issues with how the forwards link as a whole but they all need to work on it, not just Martial.

Another thing was his energy on counter-attacks. In the past, he's 10-20 yards behind the ball during fast transitions. Used to drive me nuts.

It is incredible how we see things so differently which I guess is the point of these forums. This is why I think he is fantastic. He keeps his options open and does not get in the way of where the next pass is or involve his marking player.

I love that someone on here thought his pass for James goal to Pogba was 'basic'. It was brilliant and if you don't get why it was then that is fine - all the main media outlets did and I am pretty sure Ole and his team will be very pleased.

After coming down from the Chelsea post match euphoria, this guy was the real man of the match. Understandable that some picked Maguire as it felt like forever since we've had a solid CB who can also play football on the ground. Rashford's two goals were great, but the rest of his game didn't even come close. Same with Pogba, two absolutely sumptuous assists, but clearly still rusty with about three more gears to get to.

The entire team to be fair is yet to fully get match sharp, however what we saw from Martial in the middle is indicative of why many fans have always called for him to play in his natural position. His finishing qualities aside, the reason you want Toto as a nine is his ability on the ball, creativity and speed of thought in attack, and the way he uses his body to shield the ball together with his trickery making it very hard to get the ball off him without fouling. He was key in 3 of our goals yesterday. For the penalty, he gave a perfectly weighted forward pass to Pereira who was then cynically brought down, with the ref giving advantage for Rashford to run onto the ball. And for James goal, he played a quick one-two with Pogba on the counter which literally opened up the entire Chelsea defence.

With him in the middle, we are able to play both a possession and counterattack game. He's adept at both coming deep to interplay and running the channels to attack defenders 1v1. His quality and threat in the middle will also create a lot of space either side for speedsters like Rashford to exploit, and also for midfielders who like to join in the fun like Pogba. Now that he will get the minutes and confidence to hone in on his craft, we're in for a treat.

I don't think you can hold it against him, he made the run & got inside Azpi and the ball ended up in the net - good luck was a general theme of the day given they were much better than us first half and hit the woodwork twice. It's also worth saying that, whilst there are better teams than Chelsea, there are also weaker teams and it's not like he was up against a rubbish back four.

Yes luck plays an important part too but he was in the right position and his movements were right for him to get the ball. Didn't Hernandez score his first goal with his nose?

One big problem with him is his lack of variety at virtually everything. He passes with the one technique, and that is the same with his dribbling, shooting and crossing. He's quite predictable at times.

I can't wait for him to kick on this season. He looked motivated yesterday and I hope that continues

As far as 23 year olds go, that was a pretty good centre forward performance... It'll be interesting to see how he develops there.

Can't believe people are criticising his goal, it was a striker's goal. Good movement, and a scruffy finish... he got criticised over the past few years for lacking those two very things!

It looks like Ole has lit a bit of a fire under him at least. Let's hope it lasts, because he's a great player, when he can be bothered to be.

Worked his absolute arse off yesterday. Looks far better through the middle and hopefully we get some good consistency from him. Good to see him playing with a smile on his face.

Totally agree, Ole said that both Martial and Rashford need to get in the box and take those scruffy goals and tap ins that other forwards do and that would be the key to them getting into the 20+ goal club. They can score worldies and show their skill outside the box but if they gamble on getting on the end of stuff 6 yards out they can double their scoring chances.

Good game. He’s playing the number 9 role well and he should stay there permanently. The finish was class.

Very good goal. Glad he got another. He looked to be enjoying his game around that time.

It's a waste playing him anywhere but upfront. And good to see him score with anything but his instep

Superb goal, shame that ball didn't quite flow late on in the first half.
Need to see him get 2s and really push his tally up.

Very Good game from him. Brilliant linkup today and should continue leading the line. Its just unfair that he has Lingard supporting him as a 10.

Motm for me. Great CF goal and if Lukaku is really a student of the game like he claimed he should have looked at Martial at bit more during training. Great control, good link up play.

Excellent most of the time, occasional sloppiness. As always, can be world class if he cuts out the sloppiness, but capable of brilliance.

Best player today, by a mile I'd say. Hopefully he continues being so motivated and focused in his game.

Lots of praise for him around here. Good goal, bit wasteful otherwise, albeit somewhat dangerous.

His defending for their goal was idiotic. If he just stood still instead of following three other players for that short corner, there would’ve been no room for that pass.
