It largely depends on the system, if Solskjaer's playing the double pivot midfield next season (if not sacked) then you need a more defensive midfielder alongside Pogba someone like Ndidi or Partey.

If it's a 4-3-3 then I'd personally look towards Neves and Longstaff. If Pogba is to leave then Saul is ideally the closest to replicate his influence. A midfielder that can bring goals and influence the patterns of play.

The club 100% should be signing a midfielder in January.
Saul won't leave Atletico for one. I think the only club he would have joined was City and they've since got Rodri. Partey and Ndidi are really good options and could perhaps be obtained for 50m or so. Neves although a good player is overrated in my opinion at 65m or so. I'm not sure if Newcastle can stay in the PL with Bruce as manager. We may be able to get Longstaff for 25 to 30m next summer. Although, I feel Garner needs a run in the first team. Every time, I've seen him play, he's been awesome. Also, I like the look of Havertz but then again, all of Europe will be after him. I think our ability to buy players is very dependent on our performance this season and it's not just qualifying for CL but instead showing some ambition to win the league. Apart from money and how big a club is, players these days are interested in projects at the club and style of play. If we can put on a show, I think we can attract the bigger names in Sancho and so on.

Is there a midfielder that you would prefer over Kante to play next to Pogba?

Sancho is without doubt the player who would be top priority if I were in charge. He's absolutely perfect for us.

Then I think we need a playmaking Cm so I've heard that Aounas (?) is one of the brightest talents so possibly him. Although if there's a deep lying playmaker available we may also for one but I'm not aware of many. Not very impressed by neves who appears to be a good passer but weak in other aspects.

Finally, an attacking midfielder to link play with the attack, I guess Maddison? Are there any ones that would be absolutely top class soon, apart form Havertz?
If Sancho was perfect for us then he would already be here. I want players who want to play for us because of who we are and what we represent as a club. If he doesn't want to join us when we aren't in the Champions League, then I don't want him when we are...

Sancho has to think about his own development before he leaves a club that has been fantastic for him in that regard. Sancho is still a teen and playing for a big club like Dortmund in a major European league. I think it's unfair to criticize a 19 years old for staying put considering the shenanigans and uncertainty surrounding United in the last 6 years. Hopefully all that will change under our current manager.

Eriksen on a free. Partey. Sancho.
That would be us sorted unless this season shapes differently which it probably will.

We need a midfielder that can help us control the tempo like Scholes or Carrick. I'm not sure if there's anyone available right now that is capable of controlling match rythm.

Rúben Neves. No. Pass completion rate wasn't good enough last season. Only 81% over 3000 minutes of play.
Jadon Sancho? Yes, who else?
Chillwell? Going to cost a lot.

My alternatives to Neves and Chilwell are Bruno Guimarães and Alejandro Grimaldo
Bruno Guimarães (CDM). €40m? Chelsea target. Age: 21. Paranese (Brazil). Accurate passer. Dynamic. Does not dwell on the ball (unlike Matic). Not easily dispossessed (unlike ...).
Alejandro Grimaldo. Left-back. Age: 23. Buy out = €60m. Plays for Benfica. Ex-Barcelona youth. Barca target!, but they are too stingy to pay the €60m.

I think Sancho is possible next season, but only if we look like a good side and qualify for the Champion's League. I don't think Sancho would be desperate to join us unless the average person looking from outside to in can see a drastic change from last season. I'd go with Ndidi next in midfield and while I'd love for us to sign Bruno Fernandes, I think he's most likely going elsewhere this month. If he doesn't, then I'd hope we would have enough funds with some player sales to get those three. I more-so expect our Longstaff pursuit to continue instead and keep haggling for a lower price.

There are players out there that we probably don't know of, or ever seen play, that scouts are watching/ recommending all the time.
Ole should demand they find him both a Top DM Playmaker and a box to box General for the January window.
Before anyone say:- You won't get players in January, I'm talking from other leagues all over the world. We have 63 scouts ffs. Get them working now, as we may have to win the Europa cup again, to get into Champions League.

If I could choose it would be:

John McGginn, James Maddisson and Jadon Sancho.

Those 3 would elevate us straight away.
These are the kind of players that we can expect Ole to target based on this window. I would be very happy with these three if we can retain Pogba. Luke Shaw also needs to be upgraded if he doesn't improve.

See, I think Shaw is already good and will improve with a steadier environment around him. I don't see many upgrades on Shaw out there.
In the PL, Robertson and Chilwell are clearly better than him. Half the full backs in the league are better than him offensively. He is quite solid defensively, I'll give him that. But we need him to do better when we attack. Which we could get back prime Evra!

Shaw definitely has attacking instincts in him, he can score and cross, just needs to get the balance right between both. If he can improve, he still is young enough to become an awesome player.

In the PL alone I'd take Robertson, Chilwell, Digne, both of Chelsea's LBs & Mendy (when fit) over him. You could make an argument for Spurs 2 as well.

All these shouts for Maddison and Chilwell are quite confusing. Chilwell could be decent as rotation but for the price he would cost we’d be better off getting a foreigner whose better and cheaper. Maddison is just a worse version of Lingard.. better at crossing but significantly worse at dribbling and pressing with similar abilities in shooting. He’s also not really a cm. Replacing Pogba with him would be baffling.

If you could make 3 realistic signings to improve our squad next summer who would you go for?

de Gea

Wan-Bissaka Maguire Lindelof Chilwell

McTominay Neves Pogba

Sancho Martial Rashford

Chilwell, Neves and Sancho are all gettable players for United, follow the new strategy we seem to be using and would be improvements on Shaw, Matic/Fred/Pereira & Lingard imo.

Yours?
I don't think Sancho is realistic at all. People who know Dortmund and German football know how difficult such a deal will be.

I would probably say Brooks and Maddison. Even though I hate the PL-tax. Regarding a midfielder I have no idea.

DDG
AWB - Maguire - Lindelof - Shaw
Pogba - Someone
Brooks - Maddison - Rashford
Martial

Really? Haven't Bayern Cherry-picked their players for years. I also don't recall too much difficulty in the deals for Kagawa or Mhiki and would have thought there is a good understanding between both clubs (paid fair prices for players and sold Kagawa back at a snip). My impression is they will let him go for the right price.

No doucoure love? I certainly think he would be a useful addition to the squad who would be eminently gettable.

We'd get more than £20m for Lingard and Fred, we'd get more than £15m for Pereira, more than £5m for TFM and less than £20m for Sanchez & Jones. I think they'd be free tansfers tbh.

Yeah. Similar pace, not as good defensively, much better crosser, much more dangerous going forward & a beast on set pieces. I'd definitely rather him than Shaw.
He's an absolute liability defensively, no matter how many goals he spawns out his arse. Not even Chelsea fans rate him.

Players with one year (or less) of their contract or players with releause clause, yes. If not, their really is few examples of them letting players go easy.

What highly rated players have they sold if you exclude players on outgoing contracts or with releause clause? Auba and O. Dembele? Both had to cause quite a fuss.

He's scored one goal in his entire career.

Be realistic, we can't sell players to other leagues such as Italy or Geramany because of the high salaries in EPL in general, I don't know who will pay for Fred 20+mln ). Lingard yes, can be a little more expensive to sell to a some Lester.)
Still there is of course the possibility to include players in the deal, which our club does quite rarely, unfortunately.

We could sell Fred to China for close to the £50m we paid for him. He's a Brazilian international, they love them over there and always pay way over the odds. Lingard would probably be about £30-35m to another PL team.
