I love the way he just slouches on the MOTD sofa with his arm stretched out across the length of it

He was odd last night. It was like he thought he was watching it on the sofa at home, just grumbling caustic replies while his co-commentator tried ever more valiantly to grind more than sour, solitary sentences out of him.

I know it wasn't the best of matches from an England point of view, but he's there to do a job, not chew on wasps all evening.

Credit to him though for bringing Dalglish's drinking to the public's attention - it might not have been his place to do so but I think it has increased our understanding of Kenny and his actions over the last season, and perhaps made us a little bit more tolerant of the old soak.

But yes he is terrible - maybe the BBC should have Mick McCarthy commentating on all their games? :p
Yet they still call Fergie Slur Alex and Whiskeynose when their own manager was as soppy as a sack of pickles all the time.

taking heavy criticism on the social networking sites right now because he just said Messi hasn't been very impressive for Argentina this year and Iniesta is 'unspectacular'

Just the 12 goals in 9 games for Messi in internationals this year

Lawrenson doing a Hansen?

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson at Anfield
Liverpool v Chelsea (1600 BST)
"For Liverpool's owners, everything has got to be young, be developed relatively cheaply and be built upon. Manager Brendan Rodgers fits into that very well.

"However, you can have all the young players in the world, but if you have no experienced players, you win nothing."

The psychic genius that is Lawro:

"Suarez will be really missed by his team-mates and I just have a feeling they will feel a little low and hurt. They'll all be looking around and thinking 'what will happen in the next few months?' I think Newcastle will win this one."

To be fair, not many would have predicted a Liverpool win, let alone destroying Newcastle.

He's still a chancer though.

Right, he is not an expert because he didn't predict a football result. Good logic guys!

No, he's not an expert because he hasn't played football in the top flight for 25 years and it's 24 years since he last played professionally. He doesn't play or know the game any more and barely even seems interested. He just comes out with sarcy comments that bear no relevance to anything.

How is there not a bigger thread on him?

Looks like a hobo given a makeover on Football Focus here.

I can't decide if he's alright or annoying as feck. His jokes are delivered with a cocky snark I don't like though.

I agree he is bad but nowhere near as awful as Merson & Nicholas on Sky. Nicholas in particular, is absolutely awful. Read his predictions for both ourselves and Arsenal this week, if you haven’t.

I genuinely didn’t know he was still going. Haven’t seen him on MOTD for ages.

Looks like he's trying to reinvent himself, got some top PR people in to work with to help him become tv's top pundit.

He said he's surprised we didn't sign a striker because if Rashford falls over who are we going to use...obviously completely forgetting Martial is the striker interchanging with Rash.

And if we did sign a striker, it'd be "Rashford should leave for more playing time as a striker because United clearly have no faith in him"

Lawro spent the last World Cup annoying the hell out of morons on twitter who thought his dry wit was serious punditry.

I like him.

He's a hilarious character, and much improved from the early days, where Alistair McGowan depicted him as a real misery who couldn't get even slightly positive about anything.

You get the feeling he doesn't put even a second's thought into appearance, demeanour, or material though. Probably can't believe this is a job compared to playing, and is the ultimate blagger.

Mark Lawrenson claims BBC dropped him because he is ‘65 and a white male’

https://amp.theguardian.com/footbal...dropped-him-because-he-is-65-and-a-white-male

This seems to be the go to excuse for has been pundits and presenters these days. I wonder if this will draw ‘always using the race card’ and ‘diluting real racism’ criticisms?
“In all my time at the BBC, nobody ever said ‘you can’t say this or that’, but the ‘woke’ thing drives me bonkers,” he added. “I’ve been here for 20-odd years, I think I might know what to say and what not to say.”

He then gave an example of what he considered a “very early woke moment” from 25 years ago. Lawrenson claimed that when commentating on a Bradford City match in the days after the death of Princess Diana, he was advised by an editor to “not mention the wall” when describing free kicks.
It’s impossible to take anyone serious when they’re making quotes like this.

Lawrenson benefitted from a hiring culture that gave him an advantage in getting that sort of role in the first place. If a change in that hiring culture was actually what saw dinosaurs like him get moved on then that would be to that new hiring culture's credit.

In reality though it likely had less to do with him being a white male and more to do with him already having offered three(?) decades of zero insight and even less enthusiam. Hardly surprising they might want to move on to new pundits at this point.

What a wild ride those three decades were though. Liverpool didn't lose a single game in that period!

Why is he even bothered? Lawrence sounded genuinely irritated and bored about having to watch football every time I ever heard him commentate, for decades.

If football punditry is missing anything, it is old white men! Mark Lawrenson is not owed a living even if he was good. The fact is, he has actually been stealing a living for at least 20 years as he is one of the most miserable uninspiring and uninformed pundits that I can remember in football. The use of the 'reverse' race card in this way rarely has any merit but particularly in this case it is patently untrue. I'm sure there will not be a long line of potential suitors either - perhaps he can join Richard Keys and Andy Gray in Qatar.

GB news should do their own version of soccer Saturday with him, le tiss, keys and Gray.
