Nothing. It's part of the game. Defender need to be 100% focused on what they are doing.
Goes completely against the spirit of the game IMO. Nothing a defender can do if his arm is in its natural position, not interfering with play at all, and an attacker smashes the ball into it.

That's exactly how it is.
Nope. Look up the new rules, they only apply in instances where a goal is scored, where the player's hand is in a position that makes their body unnaturally bigger or when their hand is above their shoulder. Outside of that accidental handballs still aren't an offence.

Accidental hand leading to goal/chance: foul. That's clear.

Accidental hand leading to a saved goal/chance? I was sure this would end up in a penalty, but you say it won't? The rule needs to be improved if so...

The new handball rule:
Deliberate handball remains an offense. The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick:
  • The ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm
  • A player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity
  • The ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger
  • The ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)
Maybe I'm being stupid, but I don't see how this is interpreted as if it touches a hand it is a handball. Which point applies to the Laporte decision?

Nah. Plenty a defender can do to avoid hand-balling the ball.
There's hardly anything Laporte could have done today. Aside from putting his arms behind his back which is unnatural and just plain stupid.

They should amend the rule to allow some form of pragmatism to be applied. E.g. If its ball to hand and no one gets an advantage from it.

Point 2. Laporte gains possession of the ball with his arm, creating a goal scoring opportunity for Jesus.

To me point one is for goals directly scored off an arm such as in the champions league last season with tottenham. This bounced off an arm. Was a free ball which Jesus then scored with his foot.

IFAB have made a mistake. New rule on any accidental hand touch leading / scoring a goal is moronic.

Should be some discretion for the referee, if touch has no influence on the play.

Sure it'll be revised again in the next couple of seasons..

Great watching a footballer celebrate like a prat then get called back though.

The team gained possession though.
  • A player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity
It makes no mention of the team gaining possession, but only the player who the ball touched

The rule isn't all the referees operate off though. They've been told how to interpret the rule and that interpretation includes situations like this. You will see it consistently applied this way.

Handball rule will always be a mess, there was one period when they were pointing out at "what if a player targets another players hand", we got defenders putting arms behind their backs just to make sure of it.

In this instance it did deflect a bit kindly for City. Yes Laporte had no idea but according to the new rules it is a foul. It only applies to goals scored and not penalties. City should have won this game much easily and of course was the much better team but rules are rules and I understand the city fans getting upset but this at least clears up any misunderstandings and there is no ambiguity in this for the referees.

How can anyone judge what’s “deliberate”? The easy rule is that if it hits the arm below a certain point then it’s handball. Other considerations such as distance travelled will be dealt with by VAR. In this instance it’s come from a corner and they clearly got an advantage from it hitting his arm so it should be disallowed, even if not deliberate. If you start bringing intent in to it then you open up a whole other can of worms since I could easily see players fast becoming experts in making a deliberate handball appear to be accidental.

I have to say the new hand ball rule is unfair. Joke aside, may be all footballer except keeper should cut off their arm during the game & snitches them in again after the final whistle.

That rule is only in the penalty box and if the ball touches the arm of an attacking player and that side scores. It is a good rule as it takes out the ambiguity of it. It does not count against the defending side.

If handball was just another part of the game it would be so much more fun. Actually requires skill and timing, as you can see with the Maradona and Messi goals.

Just had to say this

IFAB is a disgrace. They are toying with a jewell (which is football, most popular sport ever), eventually they can ruin it all.

I prefered when referees could just use their common sense. If nobody in the pitch or stadium saw it or asking for it, lets stop scavanger hunting for a ball touching some finger or something.

Ridiculous penalty given in Brazilian league a few minutes ago by VAR, defender had nothing to do. At least in EPL they are not giving the soft penalties but the offensive handball also is stupid.

I am very comfortable saying this because i said it when United were beneficiary of it against PSG, despite most people being blinded by their fandom.

That would be a nightmare from a surgical point of view considering they'd had to reattach all the tiny nerves and stuff. Even then, there's no guarantee that they'd get full sensibility back after the procedure's been done once, let alone every week for ten years. hehe

Now you can just kick a ball at a players hand in the penalty area and win the game. They are making the game worse.

But the ball wouldn’t have got to Jesus if it handed touched Laporte’s arm right?

I never liked the accidental rule anyway, as how often is a defender purposely handling the ball in the penalty area?

The ball bounced off Laporte's hand which then created the goal scoring opportunity. If it hadn't hit his hand, it wouldn't have gone where it did and Jesus wouldn't have had that opportunity

The goal should have stood, that was a bad decision and if the rules are such, change them again.

No you can't. The rule is only for the attacking side and not for the defending side. I wish people would look at the rules first.

Consider the Laporte/Jesus handball situation, but with the following (realistic?) alternations:
  • Jesus is aware of the ball hitting Laporte's hand.
  • Jesus has a full understanding of the new handball rules.
  • Jesus has an open goal and an easy chance to score.
You are Jesus. What do you do?

If I was a footballer I’d definitely be learning the best ways to allow the ball to hit my hand while making it appear to be a total accident. When they change the rule to appease the whiners you’ll be quids in.

What was wrong with the way they have been treating hand balls throughout the past 30 odd years? Handle it deliberately = a foul. Ball hits you hand by accident = no foul.
The problem is the consistency of the call. One ref sees a foul, the other sees ball to hand for the exact same play. I like the idea around the new rule. It's taking the grey area out of hand ball. It's not perfect, and I'm sure there will be some changes, but I think it's a step in the right direction...

This is a great video which explains the new handball rule, and as you can see in the video, refs had no idea what was and wasn't handball with the old rules. They all had different interpretations of the rule. This new rule is designed to help change that so that everyone is on the same page...

It's replaced one grey area with a new grey area - what's the line between accidental handballs being an offence and not an offence? Specifically, given the wording of the new rule, what counts as "creating a goalscoring opportunity"? It's subjective no?

OK. I will gladly admit that I am old fashioned.
However, the rule should actually be made easier to follow as opposed to the current totally rediculous interpretation.
Hand ball should only be an offence if there is an obvious movement of the hand to the ball.
Why should it be any more complicated than that.

We are talking about football.
And hence the use of the hand to make contact with the ball is an obvious offence.
IF there is no movement of the hand or arm and the ball happens to make contact with the ball then that is accidental and should not be an offence.

It's not subjective at all. If you're an attacking player and the ball hits your hand, it's a handball. If you're a defender and your arms are away from your body, it's a handball. Watch the video I posted. It's a long watch but does a great job of explaining it all...

How do you define "attacker" and "defender"? It's obvious in the goal area when there's an immediate shot. What about on the wing? Or 3 passes before a shot? or on the halfway line? Or in the opposite goal area as a clear defensive action, but leading to a long hoof downfield which immediately assists an unmarked striker?

An attacker is the guy attacking. The defender is the guy defending :lol::lol:
