VS

TEAM MICHAELF7777777

My team will play a 4-4-2 midfield diamond formation with the front 2 being inside forwards cutting in from the wings. This formation is based on that used by the French national team in the 1980's for which Michel Platini was the star player.

We'll now consider the pedigree of my players in their selected countries. Five of my players played in the Soviet Union league. I have been able to find two measures of player quality in the Soviet Union. Firstly there is the Soviet Union footballer of the year which was awarded from 1964 onwards which was voted on by journalists. Secondly, there is the best 33 football players of the season in the USSR (link:
https://translate.google.com/transl...c.academic.ru/dic.nsf/ruwiki/685003&sandbox=1) which ranks the best 3 players of the season in each position in the Soviet Union. This was awarded each season by the Presidum of the Football Federation with the list being approved by the National Coaches Council. Dasayev had 1 first (1982), 2 seconds (1983, 1988) and 1 third (1987) in the Soviet Union footballer of the year award. In the best 33 players list he was number 1 in his position 9 times (1979-1983, 1985-1988) and 2nd once (1984). Khurtsilava was second in the Soviet Union footballer of the year award in both 1967 and 1968 as well as finishing third in 1972. In the best 33 players list he finished first in his position 5 times (1968-1969, 1971-1973), second 2 times (1965-1966) and third 2 times (1963, 1970). Additionally in 1967 he finished in the top 3 for his position but the top 3 was not ordered that year although he was the highest placing defender in the Soviet Footballer of the year award in 1967. Anatoliy Demyanenko won the Soviet Footballer of the Year Award in 1985 and finished 2nd in 1982. In the best 33 players list, Demyanenko was ranked first in his position 7 times (1981-1986, 1988) second 1 time (1980) and third 1 time (1979). Valery Voronin won the Soviet Footballer of the Year award in both 1964 and 1965 which were the first two years of the awards existence. In the best 33 players list Voronin finished first in his position 4 times (1961, 1963-1965) and second twice (1960, 1966). Oleg Blokhin won the Soviet footballer of the year award 3 times (1973-1975), finished second 4 times (1977-1978, 1980-1981) and third 2 times (1976, 1986). In the best 33 players list he finished first in his position 13 times (1972-1982, 1985-1986) and second 2 times (1983-1984). Additionally Blokhin won the Ballon d'Or in 1975.

With regards to my other players. Phil Neal only missed one league game between signing for Liverpool in December 1974 and the end of the 1984-85 season. In that time Liverpool won 8 league titles, 4 European Cups, 1 UEFA Cup and 4 league cups. Elias Figueroa was the best foreign player in Brazil in the 20th century. During his five seasons in Brazil he was South American Footballer of the year 3 times (1974-1976) as well as being the best centreback in Brazil 4 times (1973-1976). Bozsik spent his entire club career in Hungary winning the Hungarian league 5 times and being Hungarian footballer of the year in 1952. Bernd Schuster won the Don Ballon award for best foreign player in La Liga twice (1985, 1991). Additionally, during his time in La Liga Schuster finished third in the Ballon d'Or 2 times (1981, 1985) as well as finishing 2nd in the 1980 Ballon d'Or although he spent some of that year in Germany. During his time in Italy, Michel Platini won the Ballon d'Or 3 times (1983-1985) while also finishing as the top scorer in Serie A three times in consecutive seasons (1982-83, 1983-84 and 1984-85). Jupp Heynckes, in his second spell at Borussia Monchengladbach scored 232 goals in 309 games (including consecutive seasons of 48 goals in 53 games, 40 goals in 43 games and 42 goals in 43 games). Heynckes was in Kicker's Bundesliga team of the season 3 times (1971-72, 1973-74 and 1974-75) as well as being the top scorer in the Bundesliga 2 times (1973-74 and 1974-75), European Cup once (1975-76), UEFA Cup twice (1972-73 and 1974-75) and the Cup Winners Cup once (1973-74).

TEAM BERBASLOTH4

My formation is built around Beckhenbauer the greatest Sweeper of all time.

When we are defending we are 5 at the back with good old fashioned defenders who are hard in the tackle but also very good on the ball.

When we are in attack beckenbauer becomes part of a diamond in midfield, he is joined by strength industry and creativity.

Alonso is preferred to Seedorf, Alonso and Real Madrid was one of the best passers in world football and his creativity will be essiential for the runs through the channels by henry and Romario.

There is a look of being quite narrow but with henry like to play from the left and Romario liking to work the last line all defenders will have to be alert also with Ballacks forward runs and eagerness to join the attack crosses from henry and Irwin could prove devastating.

I'm about to go to bed but beofre I do I'd like to mention that I think that one of my bigger advantages is the pace advantage that my front 2 of Blokhin and Heynckes has over his defense.

Before you go to bed, might I ask why Blokhin on right? Heynckes played both sided of course.

I did notice you mention inside forwards in OP but Blokhin is pretty ideal from left here IMO. The added Demyanenko partnership is icing on the cake.

The sources I could find suggested Blokhin played on both sides at various times at club level while Heynckes played mainly on the left an in the centre (also going off the formation berbasloth posted in the main draft thread I thought it would be most advantageous to put Blokhin up against Blanc).

Fair point about Blanc and Blokhin but looks like Blanc is against Heynckes here. I'd probably change Blokhin leftwards, otherwise, a pretty great team which has the essense of the assymetric Carri Magique

I was thinking it was more that than a diamond

Till the QF stage of the last draft, @Jim Beam was calling his team a diamond too :D

I do think its pretty near a Carri Magique though. The graphic shows all four players in different horizontal axis too which we though was the best way to depict the formation.

Because it was an absolute diamond of a team.

Like both teams tbh. Michaelf midfield is just wonderful. Voronin - Bozsik - Schuster - Platini has it all and you have Figueroua behind them. Would just change Blokhin - Heynckes as been said.

Berbasloth has a great attacking duo with Alonso - Tigana and Beckenbauer behind. Not a big fan of Ballack, although he is definitely underrated around here and was an excellent player in his peak. And not so big fan of Blanc at RCB. But, all together very good team.

It's definitely not a huge issue. They both played on both wings and centrally, but still, Blokhin's more natural game was edging towards the left (and he is a better player out of the two). I know that it's irrelevant, but Heynckes looked pretty neat on the right in West Germany's 1972 vintage.

That and both the fullbacks are balanced and not ideal for a 3 CB defense IMO.

I'd have played Beckenbauer as the DM/DLP in a diamond. The back 4 still looks great and you have your best defender against the opponent's best attacker.

the cannavaro arrow was a mistake didnt even know it was there.

Blanc may have lacked a bit of pace but was only really noticeable at the end of his career. He had enough of a brain to make sure it was a problem

my aim was to make a defense that isnt going to be broke down and it wont be broke.

with the pace of my strikers and the ability and creativity of beckenbauer and alonso it would be an easy transition to put them under pressure
