He was completely garbage to be honest. I don't see outside of his speed what long term probability he has for success here. There's no other element to his game? I look at Dwight Mcneil and Brooks who are similar ages and they seem miles ahead.

Time will tell if he's either a starter or squad player.

Needs to work on his core. He’s weak as shit.

He will be the most fouled player in the league this year.

A bit light weight and raw but he showed some fantastic pace and a few good turns/bursts. If he can add a good end product he can be a very effective player. Reminded me a bit of Jesus Navas.

He had a bit of a nightmare I think tonight but he’s a very young lad still learning his game. I was surprised he started and think he is better suited to impact sub role but we can’t have it all one way saying play the youth then bash them when don’t give us what we want. His potential is there, will just take time

Showed flashes of what a threat he can be. A perfectly timed through ball to him and we're in for a clear cut chance.

Being brutally honest I doubt he'll be good enough long term however for this season I'd play him every week as he offers so much balance to that right hand side and will win a lot of fouls

I liked a lot about him without the ball and thought he did a really good job in the press.

I don't think I liked a single thing he did with the ball mind; I think we all knew it was a punt and it looked one tonight, has a long way to go.

Let’s re-visit in 5 years
Gladly. Rashford, martial, Greenwood, Chong, Gomes all have far more natural ability and will all be ahead of him in 5 years. Not to say James won't be useful, but I really can't see him being anything other than a squad player type due to his work rate and pace. Which is fine, not hating on him, just being realistic. Players don't pop up as top class talents without showing any of that ability in the past, it's not all down to work rate.

I am shocked - you are being critical.

Completely shocked. Honestly.

He’s got speed and energy and motivation.

Still quite green in terms of tactics and technique but I can see why we signed him.

Reminds me a lot of Lee Sharpe and hope he can have similar first season impact.

Thought it was a bit premature to start him after a 10 minute cameo against a crestfallen Chelsea. Impact sub is the best thing for him, at least in the big away games like this one.

He is not a special talent, that much is clear. He has no business starting for united in the epl.

He's a bit like Olly Murs in those charity matches that are on Sky One. Yeah he's faster than almost everyone else on the pitch, but that's about it. Never seems to beat the first man with his cross. Left backs around the league had only just started removing the padding from their ankles when he got rid of Valencia - they're taping them back up now for James' hit and hope touch-less "crosses".

Garbage? Were people watching the same game here? He was fouled pretty much every single time he got the ball. Including when fat feck booked him. His technique and decision making isn't there yet, and maybe it's nerves, but he's a threat. Maybe better as an impact player from the bench, but to say he was garbage I think is a bit ott. He was no worse than Shaw or McTominay tonight. Followed closely by Lingard.

If people are saying he has no future here or don't see what he brings you genuinely need to grow up, christ. He's played 1 game for us . The kid is raw as hell and everyone should of known this when we bought him, he wasn't brought in to suddenly change our entire team and be the wonderkid that's gonna bang in all the goals this season.

He needs time and he needs patience. He did have some shocking play yes but he also had some good play, he needs to improve his decision making that's a given, but he has great attributes and i'm looking forward to seeing how he develops

Tough away game for his first start and his night wasn’t helped with the dive. Showed glimpses and hopefully we see him start at Old Trafford next time.

His positives are wholly based on his physical genetics. He’s very fast and has good work ethic. He was a peripheral figure until we desperately tried to scramble a second goal on the break, and then his physical traits had some effect. He lacks tactical and technical quality. This is going to be very evident as more and more teams play behind the ball. He’s best as an impact sub, however, it seems as though our main options at RW are him, Pereira and Greenwood, which is troublesome.

I thought he was meant to be fast? Why not just kick the ball and run? He was very poor.

Did well enough, but pissed me off when he refused to pass it to Martial in the box. Could have been our second goal that.

If we were any good from dead balls he'd be a great asset. Run down the wing, get fouled in a promising position, and the free kick specialists can take it from there. Unfortunately we're quite shit at set pieces though.

His final ball is way off for him to be anywhere near the first team. One for the future and shouldn’t be fast tracked so quickly.

I'm unconvinced about him. He's extremely raw. Despite what the ivory tower reds think I think it was a clear mistake not to add another expensive forward to the front line this season.

Started poorly but got better during the game. Had some good runs in the second half and looked more confident when attacking. Needs some time though. And needs to cut out the diving.

They largely fouled him out of the game.

His end product currently isn't good enough.

His pace and energy is fantastic.

He looked nervous at first but by the end of it actually looked really fecking up for it. Good sign.

Good at pressing, very good at winning the ball back.

Fairly encouraging, the end product issue is quite pressing though.

He was fast-tracked because he scored a lucky deflection on a chance he made an absolute balls of against Chelsea.

Disappointed that he'll take minutes away from more promising younger players already at the club.

Amazing that the name of this thread is "player performance" and you've said alot without actually contributing anything.
Just surprised that the most clueless whinge bag is yet again being overly critical.

Stunned.

He worked hard, good in the high press.

He hesitates when he has the ball though. He made a goal out of it last week by being indecisive and letting the ball get away from him which went in his favour. A couple of times tonight he made a good run with it, then didn't know what to do, and lost momentum.

I like him but he's got a long way to go to be starting regularly. Just being a runner isn't enough.
