Do you play? Because it looked awfully confusing to try to follow as a non-player. I've had a great time in recent months watching CS:GO, a simpler game and also one that I played years ago.

Also don't care if its a sport or not. Its a competition I enjoy watching/following.
Yeah been playing for like the last year and its nearly all I play. I can understand that, I made the girlfriend watch a match who doesn't really play any games and she was confused as hell. I think a big part is understanding what all the different characters can/can't do, until you understand that it's not going to make any sense, and you can only get that from playing.

I find it pretty entertaining. There's so much strategy and tactics involved in games like Counter Strike and LOL, I find that part really interesting.

Clearly if you play the games then you're for more likely to be entertained by it.

Doesn't seem like anyone's mentioned it, but the Super Smash Melee community is an entertaining one to follow, I find. Watched the documentary on how this came to be a while back, and it seems like a lot of work has gone into building it up into what it's become. Also:

Is anyone forcing you to watch this? Why do you care what other people find entertaining as long as its not hurting anyone.
If it was up to @Ultimate Grib people would join the military when they're 13 years old and do exactly what they're told. Free will is obviously the work of the devil. They'd obviously also be tortured if they opposed this in any way.

For a man who is so confused about what other people get upset about (damn snowflakes), he spends a surprising amount of time doing exactly that on this forum.

Anyone been watching the Overwatch League? It's the first time I've ever bothered to watch any sort of esport and I'm enjoying it more than I expected, the presentation is surprisingly professional, to the point I just don't understand where the money is actually coming from for this to work.

Couldn't give a crap if it's sport or not, it's called esport for a reason. Is email a form of mail? Logic.
There was a massive buy-in for the teams to compete in this league (I heard figures of up to €20m per "franchise" (god I hate that word) at some point) on top of the sponsors. How's the viewership numbers been for it?

Well thats the thing, how are the teams making money? I'd seen Twitch paid 90 million (dollars I think) for the rights to show it.
I'm unsure, but it's always the most viewed thing on Twitch when it's on from what I've seen.

I don't know if the teams are making money. One of the big criticisms when the league was announced was the massive buy-in fees and no evidence at all that it would become as popular as Blizzard claimed. Also heard back then that there would be no revenue sharing for the first few seasons, but I don't know if that was correct or if it was changed. Most of the teams in the league are owned by NFL/NBA/whatever owners who primarily sees it as an investment.

As for the viewership, a Google search tells me it peaked at 425k on twitch during the first week - that's not really spectacular considering the fact that the latest ELEAGUE major (CS) got over 1m on twitch and about 1.7m I believe in total (in-game viewers and a different streaming platform). I'd also assume that viewership for Overwatch would go down after the first week (I found one source that shows concurrent viewership fell from 180k to 60k in the second week) as I guess a lot of people just tuned in to check it out, but it'll be very interesting to see how it develops.

It's going to be interesting to see how it develops for sure, there's potential that all the teams involved fall into debt and this is the most spectacular failure in competitive gaming history, which will probably do the whole scene a lot of damage. It's good so many people were willing to take the risk, I just hope it's really been thought through properly.

Fun fact: I know the CEO of Farming Simulator and worked with his wife (who is a gamer herself). Mentioned her several times how someone can play Farming Simulator. She was never amused.

Bump, again.

https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/competitive/en-US/news/fortnite-world-cup-details

The road to the Fortnite World Cup begins with ten weekly Online Open qualifiers running from April 13 to June 16. Each week $1,000,000 will be on the line for eligible* Fortnite players, with payouts distributed broadly.

The top 100 Solo players and the top 50 Duos teams from around the world will join us for the Fortnite World Cup Finals in New York City July 26-28 with a $30,000,000 prize pool up for grabs! Each one of those players will be guaranteed at least $50,000 and the Fortnite World Cup Solo Champion will walk away with $3,000,000.
Serious business.

Unreal. Have you watched competitive Fortnite? The skill level is incredible.
Is it though? I think almost all comp gaming is bollocks, to be honest, but I can appreciate the lightning quick reactions for some FPS games.

Fortnite is just construction spam, in my opinion.

Officially the best poker player on RAWK.

Hmmmm. Not sure it's incredible, there's way too much luck for that in a rng game. Plus they all hide and play the same way. Speed of thought and edit plays for the top guys is insane, but the wins more come from lucky breaks with the loot and storm to get the best final circle than actual clever play, strategy and especially aim.

Don't get me wrong, I watch most of the tourny stuff, but it's not as hard to play like that than even close to being truly good at something like CS. (Which ironically I don't watch even near as much now).

Btw, my 10y.o is up to dropping near 20bombs solo on a regular basis and competes in scrims. Damn, if only he was a few years older!

More to it that that, but at end game you are mostly right. Though game sense and positional sense still counts for much more than just spamming some walls.

Maybe but he's easily the best player in the world. He's had a bad competition and underperformed and he's still going to win.

I watched a bit of the game earlier. Up until he went 3-0 up. The United bloke looked the better player by far, moved the ball better but his strikers touch around the box was awful. Every chance the Liverpool lad had went in. Fifa hasn’t changed at all.

How did the final work? Two legs with one on each platform? And if so, does their squad carry over (not played FIFA in years so no idea how FUT is connected)

Yeah one on each platform. United lad got destroyed on his 'stronger' console  I haven't played FUT for a couple of years either but it seemed like a customised FUT tournament so probably not that difficult to carry over the squads. All teams were basically using the same 12-14 players.

Its skill not luck. Winning 6 of the 7 major comps so far puts the Fifa hasn't changed myth to bed. There is not way he's gets all that luck, he was miles better than both United players start to finish today.

Being the best player doesn't excuse cnutish behaviour.
1000% guys clearly a knob but its hard not to admire his ability at the game.

There are something like 16 pre-set squads with every player on the game at most comps, they just change the squad/team name depending on who is using them

Yeah, I remember glancing at a group match when it was showing the highlights of goals from other group games and De Bruyne, Rashford, Aubameyang were common. So many different coloured backgrounds on the cards these days - guessing some like the Gerrard one with a white background were cards brought to 'celebrate' the best players who have now retired.

The Liverpool lad is definitely a pro looking at his twitter. Over 100k followers, loads of trophies he's won in his header. Our representative has just over 1k so guessing he's newer to the scene? Still did great to win the PS4 side of the draw even if he lost the overall final.

Overwatch and Fortnite are both pretty terrible esports from a spectator point of view. Not a scratch on games like cs and starcraft where you can actually follow exactly what is going on.

Im always amazed at people watching fortnite. Playing it is one thing, but the pro scene is just building, building, more building and rocket spam.

Can't believe GB is still going fecking hell

Used to rinse that in school, something like 250 GB rank and then 61 MLG rank and 2nd in Europe for Mw2 Xp when it changed to that.

One of the mates checked that and seen the cod4 ladder was relatively active so we played 2 last night. Won both, and I was surprised I still remembered things and hit 10 kills each map minimum. Played Vs a guy who was 350 gb rank and his pals. (S&D on cod4 we played).

I was playing non stop back then. If you were on European ladder, do you remember deMand? We had a tasty record on there. Played with loads of pickup teams with Jakeufpc and that lot too If you know them?

Was funny as the S&D players would have unreal records but the playoffs were MLG variant so people used to ask us for advice and people to play on their accounts and in turn they would invite the people to get the trophy

They were the days

Now Accepting Positive Reps.
I'm sure I've posted it before having gone to multiple international COD events but now it's been franchised, the London team plays at the Copperbox and the first London leg is this weekend so I'm going with a mate.

Usually good for a few beers and not taking life so seriously.

Seeing as this looks likely to be the only sports we're gonna get for the time being, anybody who's into it who can suggest what to watch and where? Asking as a complete neophyte
