1. Spend a fortune on a guy who's great in the air.
2. Put him on the back post for corners.
3. Hit the first man with every corner.

Success!!

It actually pisses me off that we can't put a decent ball in from a dead ball.

No one expects a goal every time, but it shouldn't be that hard for a pro footballer to put it in well.

I wonder if Gomes & Greenwood are good taking corners? Anyone seen them taking ones before in youth?

That winds me right up too, I vent too often in the pub when it doesn’t even get past the first man. I used to take them and I was a shit footballer but I rarely didn’t put a corner into the mix. On shit pitches some that weren’t even level, played on one that the corner spot was level with the crossbar on side  - still manage to work out that it wouldn’t need the height on it though, not sure some of our boys would!

It isn't just down to one player either, but collectively the whole team just can't seem to do it. It's been this way for years. There's no height on the ball at all and the balls just regularly get cut out by the first man. Or worse, we play it short and then lose it. I don't really understand why it's so difficult, especially as this is one of the easier things to train. You don't even need the entire team present to practise this, a player could just be by themselves and whip balls into the box from the corner kick spot, thinking about height and placement. Same with free kicks. It's bizarre.

It really is. Just strengthens my theory that a lot of footballers aren't actually that amazing at kicking a ball.

Last time we were good at them was 12/13. Think Evra bagged like 5 and Evans scored a fair few as well.

Just sign Maddison and be done with it. I love his crossing ability and how good he is at set pieces. Absolutely class in that department. Problem is he is going to cost stupid money.

At this stage, if we get a corner we may as well just give it straight to the opposition keeper for a goal kick because we're useless at them.

Either that or actually play Mata.
Mata for some reason has become very unreliable from corners.

I recall him taking 2 corners in our last game and hitting the first defender both times.

Yep I definitely remember him coming on and hitting a corner that would have hit the floor before reaching the six yard box if a defender hadn’t hoofed it out, I don’t even know how that is possible for a professional footballer if he isn’t intentionally keeping it low but there wasn’t a united player near where it was going to land.

I have full confidence that our club would find a way to ruin that part of his game.

Why do we even bother to take them? We must have a goal every 1000 corners. Just let them take a goal kick and we’ll save five minutes every game.

How often does Young pick out one of the opposition with his corner kicks? Uncanny ability.

Why are we having a max of three players in the opposition's box when we have a corner? Everton had double of that. It's mind boggling. How do we expect to score with so few bodies in the box?

That's generally a problem by the way. We are not having close to enough players in the box when our fullbacks try to create something.

Was wondering earlier how many corners we have conceded this season in comparison to other teams. Seems like teams have loads of corners against us.

We were trying to exploit zonal defending by running into the box late as the set piece was being taken. Worked against Chelsea for Maguire, but won’t every week.

This why I have been harping about this. We need variations. The near post flick is one of the most difficult to defend against. All top teams do it. We have good headers in Maguire, Matic and Scott. Lindelof is not a bad header at the near post. Yet we always try to find Maguire and apart from the one time he has not scored. I wonder if the coaching staff are as dump as they look. Surely we have tried enough times to do it the one way. It's time to bring a variation.
