Everyone on this forum has scored and assisted as many as Jesse Lingard for Manchester United in 2019. Let that sink in.

I try not to blame him because he shouldn't be in this position. To be a starter for Manchester United, that's not his level.

But it's getting really hard to understand how he keeps getting picked. You can't play in the number 10 role and be as technically limited. Because make no mistake about it, he's one of our most limited players on the ball. Also, my main problem with Lingard is that he hides from the ball. People say that he runs a lot, no he runs away from the ball because he doesn't want the responsibility.

Finally, the problem is he doesn't even have real competition. Pereira is as invisible when he plays and I don't know enough about Gomes to be sure that he would be better than him.

We badly need to upgrade him, in January is a must IMO.

I think the Caf has found Lukaku's replacement for most villified player for this season. Thought it would be Mata but he hasn't played. Lingard wasn't as bad as some are making out and was involved in the buildup to the goal against Wolves. People are talking as if he's Gabriel Obertan or Bebe.

He's not scored a goal in the league since the 22nd December, not got an assist since Boxing Day.

14 matches in total, for an attacking player for Man Utd.

He deserves every bit of criticism he's getting.

Despite Lukakus faults he at least contributed to the attack with goals and the occassional assist. Lingard has done nothing all year. He needs a serious injection of end product.

Honestly staggered that people actually defend him, he's a regular attacking player for us and has no end product.

If he'd started 25, 30 games I would get the level of criticism, but I think he barely starteed half the games. I agree he needs to be better technically but as usual people are going a bit overboard.

Teams he wouldn't get into

City
Liverpool
Tottenham
Arsenal
Chelsea
Wolves
Leicester
Everton

Maybe even West Ham with Lanzini. Could do a job at Watford though. Due to play 40+ games for us this season
Well Watford did sign Welbeck so we can give them another Caf overrated dud who is thoroughly unproductive.

It's over 1000 minutes without a goal or an assist. He's been appalling for over a year now.

Any attacking player at any club in the world would be getting criticised.

Stats aren't everything. Who knows how many potential assists were wasted by our forward line last year. He's a decent player and honestly I think he's the best option we have atm for that position.

His output is horrific for an attacking player. I understand stats aren’t everything and he has his uses at times but overall, he’s nowhere near good enough.

His goal scoring a while back was his most impressive trait especially in big games, those have gone. I don’t recall him ever creating much unless you count running out the way as creating?

I agree that we should have better for that position but we don't imo. Maybe Gomes, but he's inexperienced. I always feel like we look a better team when he's on the pitch and involved, Lingard that is. But I give up, its obvious I'm the only one who thinks so.

Have people looked through that list? Defenders and defensive mids have more output than him. Goodness me.

When you think how far forward he plays and the talent he plays with, i can't understand how an attacking player can actually be this bad.

Is there anyone he is better than in whole of the PL?

Lingard fans should probably look away...

I went back and checked all players stats in the Premier League from the 1st January to today and found the following (I've only counted players with 750mins or more)

Most Assists (Top 14)
10 - Trent Alexander-Arnold
8 - Andrew Robertson
7 - João Moutinho
6 - Eden Hazard
6 - Ryan Fraser
6 - David Silva
5 - Kevin De Bruyne
5 - James Maddison
5 - Christian Eriksen
5 - Matt Ritchie
5 - Paul Pogba
5 - Salomón Rondón
5 - Dwight McNeil
5 - Ricardo Pereira
0 - Jesse Lingard (Joint 137th)

Most Key Passes (Top 10)
60 - James Maddison
53 - João Moutinho
49 - Ryan Fraser
47 - Christian Eriksen
45 - Eden Hazard
44 - Kevin De Bruyne
41 - Pascal Groß
40 - Luka Milivojevic
38 - Matt Ritchie
37 - Gylfi Sigurdsson
7 - Jesse Lingard (Joint 137th)

Minute Per Key Pass (Total Mins / Key Passes)
21.5mins - Kevin De Bruyne
25.6 - James Maddison
26.2 - Willian
29.0 - Pascal Groß
31.6 - João Moutinho
31.7 - Eden Hazard
32.0 - James Milner
34.5 - Mesut Özil
35.8 - Ryan Fraser
36.6 - Trent Alexander-Arnold
120.0 - Jesse Lingard (Ranked 115th)
When you have a look at his dribbling stats as well it turns out he's the worst dribbler out of our attackers too, he scores lowest out of our attackers for successful dribbles % per 90 and scores second lowest for attempted dribbles per 90 just ahead of Mata. Crazy how he's occupying the position that is in the middle of every triangle formation offensively, standards have dropped massively. Gomes wins hands down between the two when a ball's at their feet, would've thought it was more obvious to play Gomes there if you plan on controlling games with possession.

It's not even just the stats. His general play is absolutely rubbish, too.

It never ceases to baffle me when I see people defend him. It's like people have forgotten what a Manchester United attacker should be.

Would have probably counted as a key pass if it was a potential assist, not that I'm an expert on these things.

@RedSky great work mate. If you don't mind, could you post some of the more defensive stats, ball recoveries, forcing errors (if there's such a category) and ermm other off the ball metrics. Esp in relative to his attacking contemporaries. Does he stand out in these categories? Do know he's got to be pretty high on the distance covered metric.

Everyone knows his end product is a wee bit crap, but his only supposed saving grace is his off the ball work and his alleged link up play. Is his off the ball work truly that remarkable or noteworthy, to compensate for his distinct lack or absence of ability on the ball?

I'm not too convinced myself.

That's from the last calendar year, you could say that Alexis Sanchez is more effective defensively than Lingard statistically, not sure if that means much though. Also ignore Dalot, he's just included because he's played on the wing a few times.

What actually defines as a key pass? And why don't you just show stats from the first two matches of this year (19/20) call it apples to apples instead of the full calendar year of 2019?

These stats don't matter. You fail to see what he brings to the team.

Clear agenda here. The lengths people will go to undermine him just because he is a local lad. Don't understand why people can't be patient with relatively young players who are still learning and probably are late bloomers. Our rivals are crying out for the player of his ability because despite no goals and assists he is so crucial. Am i doing it right?

Stats aren't everything. Who knows how many potential assists were wasted by our forward line last year. He's a decent player and honestly I think he's the best option we have atm for that position.
Mate it doesn't matter how many chances were wasted by our forward line. He has made 7 key passes in the last 8 months of football. That has nothing to do with wasted chances.

Anyone seen this commercial?

Less Is more?
Weird that they ask someone who has multiple dances, an iconic JLingz celebration and so many other ways to celebrate a goal when he finally does score a goal to be in that commercial... the whole less is more just doesnt fit Lingard.

Well.. it does fit him when it comes to scoring goals or providing assists i guess

Has any journalist asked Ole why they are equal in assists and goals to Jesse Lingard in 2019? I’m really curious what the coaching staff think of his offensive contribution

You're right, they're not everything but in certain cases, they tell you everything you need to know.

Teams he wouldn't get into

City
Liverpool
Tottenham
Arsenal
Chelsea
Wolves
Leicester
Everton

Maybe even West Ham with Lanzini. Could do a job at Watford though. Due to play 40+ games for us this season
No "maybe" there, Lanzini is a much better player than Lingard

Greenwood buries that chance, unquestionably.
At the very least, he makes a good connection with the ball.

Let’s face it Lingard is in the team only because he can do a decent job in pressing, and nothing else. He is a joke.

I am really do not understand why we keep this player. Played good in one game and then disappeared for 10-20 games. Just because he was grown up with from our youth team ?

I could go back and check tackles, interception etc. I recorded the following: goals, assists, shots, shots OT, key passes, touches and passes. Would be like 4/5 hours work to go back through all the fixtures and throw in defensive stats. I'll probably get round to it eventually but need a break. :)

That's from the last calendar year, you could say that Alexis Sanchez is more effective defensively than Lingard statistically, not sure if that means much though. Also ignore Dalot, he's just included because he's played on the wing a few times.
Which site is that?

Wyscout?

Yep, their stats can differ slightly when compared against whoscored. I've tested the two against each other by watching video snippets for each individual action in wyscout and wyscout edged it slightly for accuracy, in the examples I looked at anyway.

The reasons why we keep this player are the following (based on several coaches/managers descriptions and own viewing):

- He has many good (though not exellent) all round qualities, very few outright weaknesses
- He has good ball control, important when we play in tight spaces
- He is a good and consistent passer (look at his completed passes in a no 10 position) important to keep up ball retention which we already struggle with
- He is fairly quick (importent for our counters and for pressing)
- He has a good work rate (important for our pressing)
- He makes a lot of intelligent movement initiatives, important to open up play when we need to break down teams
- For an attacking player, he is good at covering defensive space
- He is good at understanding and following different game plans
- He has a very good work ethic in training (important to keep high standards at the training ground)
- He is very good at keeping a positive mentality in the dressing room/bus etc also when times are rough (very important to protect team morale in difficult patches)

He is a typical example of a player who exels in little, but allows a manager to field very talented specialists around him in spite of them lacking certain of these skills, which he will compensate for. Which is why manager after coach after manager continues to put him in their starting elevens while having more talented specialists on the bench.

Then there are reasons why many fans and some pundits think he is not good enough as a starter at Man United, reasons which are rifely described in this and many other threads here at the café. But that is a different question.

My blood started boiling reading your post before I realised it must be a wum.

Ultimately, the blame lies with the club and manager that have allowed this situation happen.

Even Brexit Sam knows.
"From a personal point of view and as a manager, there would have been warnings already. I would have told him: "You don't have much time to change things before someone takes your place." As a manager, you must be ruthless."
