Rob Harris reporting this time.
Just after the penalty miss.

Just seen his Twitter account and some of the stuff is just so predictable that it appears people are now just doing now to spite the campaign.

Don’t know whether to despair or just be stoical. It’s just going to happen again and again

Is it from fans or just trolls playing up now ?

I don’t have Facebook or any form of social media, the caf is the only thing close that I take part in. Saying something racist online is just as bad as saying it in the street, in fact, it’s worse as nobody can properly retaliate.

I agree with Maguire, each account should have a traceable path back to the person and the police should be able to prosecute the same as somebody in the street would be.
Social media has far more negatives than positives in my opinion.

I think it’s the latter but there’s no way of absolutely knowing that.

The comments don’t reference the penalty miss or Utd.

Lot of ‘n’ words being dropped. The feeling is that it’s from illegal streams ( whatever that means )

That film The Purge springs to mind
Good idea, in theory, the only problem is that the purged would resurface 5 minutes later under the protection of a new account.

Why not just remove Twitter from existence. I mean, would you miss it?

The problem is twitter would rather ban users who post copyright music than stuff like this

And the allowance of people to create numerous accounts and no accountability at all. In 2019 when there is so much monitoring this is allowed to still happen

It wasn’t even a bad penalty, closest you can come without scoring.

And I had money on him to bag!

Surely they can trace an IP adress or they are step ahead of that too.

Yeah they could but are they really going to arrest, and prosecute 100s, it's not cost effective for the outcome and unfortunately that's how policing works right now. Also most of these posters are using a VPN to hide behind.

Social media really is a sesspool, I really wish it was just a fad that would feck off.
Can anyone give a single reason why we are better off with Social Media than we were before it?

We could still communicate with friends and family all over the world (MSN/AOL and the others). We can still watch stupid videos (YouTube, Vimeo etc).

All that we lose is abuse and dodgy memes, which we can at least move meme production to Reddit.

Time to talk old social media out back.

It's easier to communicate directly with consumers through social media.

Edit: I mean that in a joking way of course.

Vile delinquents with just enough intellegince to clasp their velcro together. What would happen if it was mctom or james or mata? I'm white and find the racist aspect wholly unacceptable. These trolls should realise their incredible ineptitude will only get them noticed for a short while. There is no need or place in society, let alone football, where their lack of brain cells should overshadow everything else.

Social media is just a mirror on to society as a whole. Those beliefs and views have always been festering away below the surface, it's just that now the likes of Trump, Farage, Johnson, Tommy Robinson, and the whole Brexit charade has legitimised those views in the eyes of the people that hold them. People that would have been embarrassed to say this shit now feel emboldened to do so. Racist attacks, both in football and in wider society, are up a huge amount since Brexit - the far right is a fecking stain that needs addressing by any right-thinking member of society.

How do we know these are white people only sending these messages?

Some of the accounts look like African accounts fishing for attention. Just had a look and some of them are.

This is exactly what I had feared and expected after the Pogba abuse.

These trolls thrive on the attention. Hell why even post on social media if your not looking for a broad audience.

I know it may sound daft but the best thing we can do is ignore them. Better still, with the technology we have today, can’t we just have some bot that will be able to determine if a post is abusive or not?

Social media hasn't just given a voice to the far right but to every conceivable form of extremism.

It breeds crazy and the scum festers.

Accounts should be verified with I.D. Can still be 'anonymous' but the company should be able to identify instantly. Inexcusable not to

Sadly I don't think it's just trolls. I think some of them are united fans as well. Maybe not all and there are some just doing it for attention but there will be so called fans.

Some countries around the world simply don't like people with black skin. We've seen it for ourselves too many times. And we have fans in those countries. Very sad times but I don't think it's going away.

Trump, Brexit and people like Le Pen are partly to blame too. Far right views are on the increase around the world which is empowering racists everywhere.

They will never do that.

A better method would be that to send tweets to anyone not on your friends list, you must register your ID.

That way people don't have to provide ID but by not doing so they are restricted as to who they can communicate with.

Or, even better, shut it down, set fire to the servers and sell the domain.

Better security measures - bank details, passport or some other form of identification easily traceable to your home address - would go a long way to preventing the trolls from having the freedom to do and say as they please.

Of course, that would severely limit their active userbase. The people at Twitter probably wouldn't like that very much.

Surely anything posted on a web site would leave some kind of signature revealing an IP / Mac address or something to locate the user.

Are you saying journalists are reporting on racism to sell papers to a majority white audience

Is this a genuinely serious question?

Truth is we can’t actually tell if the posters are white or black - profile pics, bios etc. are easily falsified but are you honestly trivialising this down to, “prove they’re white”. Let’s say they’re not, & they’re asian - do that make it less racist? worse? better?

The behaviour is abhorrent, end of.

Does it matter if they are black or white or anything else?

If you attack someone for the colour of their skin, then that's racism.
