I think that Roy wicket is a classic example of someone playing a ball so badly that you make it look much better than it was.

Good ball, lovely little bit of away movement, absolutely dogshit shot and even worse footwork, absolutely no idea why he was trying to do with it.

Feet up at home.
Absolutely no chance will take years to build a decent batting side and that's even if they try and address it. White ball rules all.

The ability to just hang in is priceless in test cricket. Denly has not played well but just leaving balls has settled pressure a touch.

Just reaching that point where Hope creeps back in, so I expect a couple of quick wickets just after tea.

Think it will be much more fun in this thread after the football!

Really great effort so far from Root and Denly. Taking the innings 30 mins at a time, which is the only way to play test cricket. Hoping the middle order are absorbing this as inspiration.

Why we don’t bat like this all the time is for another time, but it’s looking OK so far.

How can umpire give that out for Root? It was a clear edge and two sounds even from my sofa!

Incredible decision. He looked highly embarrassed seeing the replay.

Hey look, if you bat properly (with the exception of three dogshit drives Denly played) you can score runs in test cricket.

Please, please, please, don't think Denly and Root have done most of the work and that you can go for it now, please.

I don't know what that silly 'winviz' thing is saying at present but I don't think I'd give England more than a 10% chance.

Survive until the new ball and then see off the first twenty overs of that, then obviously England have a decent chance, but that itself is a huge ask.

At least they’ve made a bit of a fight of it. Next mini goal they’ve set is reaching the close. It’s tricky right now I would imagine to balance wasting time against the old ball and losing wickets.

Much better from England, although a tad too extreme in their caution perhaps. That new ball is right around the corner, if England can head that off then they have a chance.

"Playing for Glamorgan helped a lot," Labuschagne said. "Obviously playing 10 first-class games in probably less than two months, maybe a bit more, was very helpful. Playing against the swinging ball in different conditions - and just learning my game and learning to put big runs on the board - definitely helped me and built my confidence as well. Then transitioning to this - I think I didn't play many other formats leading up to this. so my focus was really on red-ball cricket. So the lead-up and preparation was really good.

"Especially in Test cricket you go through - I think Wadey [Matthew Wade] and I went through a period yesterday when we were like 'let's get to a 50-run partnership' and it took us about 15 overs to get another five runs. In Test cricket it can come in patches and when they're bowling well, you've just got to trust the process and trust the runs will come, they will get tired and it will open up."

Root out within the first half an hour, England all out 230 ish.
I'd go 200. I do think we'll lose one before the new ball and I think things will happen pretty quickly once they have it.

Also, I think I'm asking for them to reach 250 for less than eight wickets, if we're to describe this as a gutsy effort or whatever.

Rather than just further evidence of how pathetic the first innings was.

Nasser's got a point about these helmets. You don't want to be wearing something that bits can fly off and hit the stumps.

It’s all very well creating a siege mentality with peerless defence, but scoring so few runs creates pressure on yourself, as Warne has outlined.

Not sure I understand England’s run acquisition strategy. Unless it’s to wait until 30 mins before lunch.

It's probably a temporary strategy just to get going this morning. Main aim is to not lose a wicket early I would guess?
