Good riddance! A classic example of a liberator turning into a tyrant.

Do we have anyone on the caf from Zimbabwe? I'd be interested in their take.

All my opinions on Mugabe are formed from the western media so I naturally think he was a tyrant who destroyed his nations economy.

I remember learning in school in the 90s that Mugabe was an example of a progressive African leader and if there were more leaders like him in Africa the continent would be better off.

What he did in the first years in the transition from the apartheid Rhodesia was quite progressive, he put a lot of focus on education.

He ended up like your stereotypical tyrant though.

He lived too long. Did great liberating Rhodesia from minority rule (no one can take that away from him). Despite his heart being in the right place regarding land seizure, he clearly didn't have a solid grasp of economics. And he did the dictator thing wrong (if you're gonna be a dictator, be like LKY, or Kagame).

As often in Africa, leaders embody the saying 'Die young or live long enough to become the villain'. Power has a way of corrupting. Many leaders rise up from among the underprivileged with promises to make things better, but lose themselves along the way.

When a leader has ruled for that long, it means they've removed the checks and balances, and silenced (by violence and fear) any opposition. They're bound to be isolated from the underprivileged and surrounded by sycophants who play to their ego while enriching themselves.

Pretty sure even very early he was murdering lots of people. It just wasn't well reported.

This. Started off a hero of sorts and died an absolute cnut tbh. His family and his cronies lived in absolute luxury, waltzing around the globe, spending millions of dollars, whilst his people basically starved and struggled to put food on the table.

I don't know about that, but I wouldn't find it hard to believe. Some politicians start out good and get drunk on power, lose their way, others are nefarious from the beginning. It would be easy for a new relatively unknown politician to paint themselves as a savior if they run a good PR campaign.

I just really hate what follows when any past world leader dies, especially one with any kind of left wing tendencies that some people lower themselves and start flinging muck.

It was similar when Castro died. Again, not a politician I have a heap of affection for, but why people feel the need to stoop immediately to vulgarity is beyond me.

Is it me or several of these high profile terrible men are passing on recently.

Off the top of my head:

David Koch - One of the biggest destroyers of our climate

Nuon Chea - The no.2 in the Khmer Rouge era. Brutalized an entire nation.

It's generational so nothing special, really.

My vague impression of post-colonial African politics is that there have been a good few far worse dictators across the continent than him.

Not really. He will go down as one of the worst.

The problem is he is a liberation hero and a lot of the countries value this more than the disaster he caused after liberation. Politicians will speak highly of him but actual people on the street do not. We have two Zimbabweans in my office. Both came into the office today grinning.
