Bit of both I thinkMeh. Was he that bad or is it similar to Gaddafi in that the Western media have painted him badly?
Hang on.. Are you saying Gadaffi was a good guy who was treated unfair by the western media?Meh. Was he that bad or is it similar to Gaddafi in that the Western media have painted him badly?
Dunno, maybe ask the people from North Matebeleland.Meh. Was he that bad or is it similar to Gaddafi in that the Western media have painted him badly?
Pretty sure even very early he was murdering lots of people. It just wasn't well reported. As often in Africa, leaders embody the saying 'Die young or live long enough to become the villain'. Power has a way of corrupting. Many leaders rise up from among the underprivileged with promises to make things better, but lose themselves along the way.
When a leader has ruled for that long, it means they've removed the checks and balances, and silenced (by violence and fear) any opposition. They're bound to be isolated from the underprivileged and surrounded by sycophants who play to their ego while enriching themselves.
This. Started off a hero of sorts and died an absolute cnut tbh. His family and his cronies lived in absolute luxury, waltzing around the globe, spending millions of dollars, whilst his people basically starved and struggled to put food on the table. He lived too long. Did great liberating Rhodesia from minority rule (no one can take that away from him). Despite his heart being in the right place regarding land seizure, he clearly didn't have a solid grasp of economics. And he did the dictator thing wrong (if you're gonna be a dictator, be like LKY, or Kagame).
I don't know about that, but I wouldn't find it hard to believe. Some politicians start out good and get drunk on power, lose their way, others are nefarious from the beginning. It would be easy for a new relatively unknown politician to paint themselves as a savior if they run a good PR campaign.Pretty sure even very early he was murdering lots of people. It just wasn't well reported.
Eh?Pretty sure even very early he was murdering lots of people. It just wasn't well reported.
Good summation, mate.He lived too long.
It's generational so nothing special, really. Is it me or several of these high profile terrible men are passing on recently.
Off the top of my head:
David Koch - One of the biggest destroyers of our climate
Nuon Chea - The no.2 in the Khmer Rouge era. Brutalized an entire nation.
Well not him but people on his behalf. They were talking about it on 5live this morning.
Just amazing how some of these people managed to live exceedingly long lives. Read somewhere that Zimbabwe's life expectancy was once reduced to 40 under his rule. It's generational so nothing special, really.
Quentin Letts really is an outrageous prick.Tweet

With great wealth comes pretty sweet healthcare.Just amazing how some of these people managed to live exceedingly long lives. Read somewhere that Zimbabwe's life expectancy was once reduced to 40 under his rule.
He was no angel. But look at the mess left behind since the USA/Brits got rid of him.Hang on.. Are you saying Gadaffi was a good guy who was treated unfair by the western media?
by what criteria do you judge these dictators to come to this opinion? My vague impression of post-colonial African politics is that there have been a good few far worse dictators across the continent than him.
Not really. He will go down as one of the worst. My vague impression of post-colonial African politics is that there have been a good few far worse dictators across the continent than him.
