Why?? I always pull for the guys closer to my age :D

feck yeah, time for some prime violence.
There's something about Glover that I just don't like. Just feels like a journeyman. Nikita is young enough to grow into a threat... but keeps failing!

Gaethje!! Nice!!

The only problem here is that the UFC make their money through US PPV events and ad money from TV deals during non PPV events, so the $$$ wouldn’t be there since holding events outside of ordinary peak US tv watching time zones reduces viewership in the US. Also most good fighters out of the Russian sphere are Daghestanis who leave the country and come to America the moment they become remotely good (assuming they qualify for American visas), so the idea of building some sort of infrastructure in Russia, while a good idea, wouldn’t result in Russia being the new Brazil since most good Brazilians immediately move to the US as well.
Absolutely correct evaluation imo. I think it’s a bit of a vanity project for Putin. He has hard-on for any sport that involves a lot contact. Maybe he gay? :nervous:
This is also true and again it sounds like a throwaway comment about building something which is thriving already. It’s not as if Khabib is even close to Karelin or even Fedor. Once he retires and if Zabit doesn’t fulfill his talent, then there’s only Petr Yan left that could engage the casuals in Russia.
@Raoul Good points. But can’t both be true? ie: encouraging many more fighters from grass roots Russia, who can then follow the established path into US based training, creates more fans from Russia (and Muslim countries) which is in addition to current USA base audience. To do so would require expanded facilities and promotion inside Russia and Caucuses.

@MaxiPaxi it’s most certainly a vanity project for Putin, but will cost peanuts, whilst reinforcing his desired macho projection of the Russian state. You can see from the VDO that Putin deeply admires Khabib and his father and is very keen to be associated with them.

UFC is not a purveyor of high morality or political correctness and so having Putin’s direct endorsement is great for the sport. Just need Trump to get behind Ferguson in the next fight vs Khabib, and it’s pure Cold War comedy gold.

Pretty good article - can be applied to Putin just as it could his Chechnyan henchman.

I agree that these ‘strongmen’ are using UFC to project their desired image. But I don’t agree with the ‘sportswashing’ comment.

As I said MMA is not a vehicle for morality or political correctness, it’s about men and women kicking the shit out of each other, and so is a natural bedfellow for an assorted range of hooligans, mafia and ‘strongmen’.

I agree. There’s a balance that has to be struck between the two extremes. On one hand it’s counterproductive to attempt to completely ignore the dictators while attempting to do business in their country. On the other it’s also also counterproductive to allow them to use the UFC to boost their cult of personalities among the population.

Those 4 minutes before he gassed, was some of the best fun I've had as of late. It was like an MMA comedy special, fecking hilarious.

I hope he manages his energy better next time. the fecker probably spent more energy doing his backstage pre workout and walk out, than actually fighting.

Thanks so much for sharing. That was fun and definitely worth watching!

As a 'casual', I've never heard of Periera, nor ever seen this type of acrobatic peacocking. Is this actually 'a thing' in MMA, or just his own pretensions?
(Edit: just watched his debut fight vs Danny Roberts )

Not sure whether Periera is very cool or an absolute tool: Connelly found it very easy to evade Periera's gymnastically oriented strikes, which also seemed to lack power, and as you say, it looks like these circus tricks gassed him out.

UFC 245 scheduled that night in Vegas. Maybe he’s boxing?

Trust Ariel to ask the dumbest questions. Not sure who I'm rooting for here...
I'm looking forward to this fight. I only wish they hated each other so there would be more verbals

I agree with Colby though (probably for the first time). Diaz and Masvidal are two journeymen with good but not great records. Masvidal lost his last two before two amazing knockouts. It's his gimmick that has shone through recently. Diaz is Diaz. Great to watch but a level below the best.

Still, I can't wait for it .
